My DS (14) has gotten it into his head that he would like to have lizards instead of fish in his tank now.
I told him that I would do some research on it before giving my final NO! ;) So I figured where better than the DIS to get some input from other people.
He is thinking about green anoles since they are small enough for his 10 gallon tank. The lady in the pet store says that they are fairly easy to look after, but if they get out they're gone since they are so fast. Has anyone here ever had any experience with these things? Thanks in advance for your input! Kathy

Anoles are great pets! Especially as "first" lizards. They are not expensive, easy to maintain, and kids like that they change colors. They are very fast although I never had any trouble with loosing them. They tend to "high-tail" it across the room and then stop, so they are easy to catch. Don't be afraid of a little lizard. Take a close look, those anoles are actually quite cute.

I don't know anything about anoles. But I do know that whatever he gets, a 10 gallon tank is really too small. They thrive better is bigger habitats, they don't get sick as easily.

A bearded dragon is a great lizard for a pet, but it takes some work and a big tank.

Goodluck :)

My son had anoles for a while. No problem except for having to regularly go to the pet store to buy live crickets! And if you got the bigger crickets and they weren't eaten right away, they chirped!

My DS has a gecko named Gex. We have her in a ten gallon aquarium, she is beautiful. I was very against having any lizard in my house, especially one that I had to go buy live crickets for, ewww, but it is actually cool the way she hunts them, like a little dinosaur.
And you know what, they are so easy to care for unlike my cats, they are practically no maintenence. DS plays with her all the time. Just found out recently that geckos can swim, imagine that, now he wants to bring the gecko swimming all the time.

BTW, we considered an iguana - my advice is NO WAY, whatever you do, do not get one of them.

I had a gecko in high school. It was a brook gecko, which is a small brown speckled kind. They're very easy to care for. The only part I didn't like was that the crickets chirped all night.
