has anybody ever done this or thought about it. I'd love to purchase large sailboat and island hop while living aboard. I would dock and take extended trips from the dock area.

No-but it sounds wonderful! Are you a boater now? I keep telling DH we need to learn how to sail properly.

We want (in about 10 years) to get a crusier for the great lakes and do something similar (long weekend trips) The islands does sound better.

I've been aboard boats alot but I don't have the experience for something like this yet. I still have to put 4 kids thru college so I've got time til I can do this. I am thinking of picking up a starter boat at the end of this season, when they cost less. I would work my way up and get a feel for whether I could live in such a confined space.

We never truly lived on a boat but we spent a lot of time island hopping when I was a growing up. It does take time just getting used to living in such a confined area. A family of 4 really need to like each other and all parties should know how to help in case of a storm. I guess I spent about 3 to 6 weeks a year on the boat and it was a lot of fun.

Perhaps in theory, but I know I would not like it. We have owned a boat and do boating vacations, only on lakes so far. Maybe if it was ocean sailing it would be different.

My dh would love it! I think it has to be in your blood. Although if it was a yacht, I might be able to take it.

Yes, this has always been a dream of mine! ...sigh

That's definately a dream I have. My SIL's sister lives aboard a boat with her DH during the summer months in a Mass. harbor. In the winter they move into their house. They love it!

That is what we did, we have a 18ft runabout that we love (it's going on the water I think next week) and we spend our summer on the river every weekend-or as many as we can) We love it.

I think we'd kill each other on our 20ft Whaler! :crowded:

DawnCt1 - What harbor in Mass? We keep ours in Hyannis Harbor! :boat:

This thread has me thiking of Jimmy Buffet pirate: & island drinks :stir:

And helped me discover a lot of new smilies too :sail:

ah, another Parrothead. Can't wait for concert season. I'm going to our local club's annual party next Saturday.
I think the minimum size for living aboard as a couple would be 40'.

.
party: Now that sounds like a party!
FINS TO THE LEFT.....FINS TO THE RIGHT... :woohoo:

I know three couples who live on their boats.

One set are commercial fishermen out of Ketchikan, AK. Due to housing costs in AK, it's just cheaper for them to live year round on their boat.

One lives on their houseboat in Oregon.

The last have a 66 foot motor yacht, home port is in South FL, but they are often found anywhere in the world (last time I got e-mail from them they were in St. John but getting ready to head towards Brasil). They are retired and in their mid-50's. He got his first job out of college working for a certain "Fruit Company" and his stock options made him a multi-multi-millionaire. :thumbsup2

This is my dream and a major goal for DH and I once the kids are grown. For now I get by with frequent vacations to the sunny spots and a ring-tone on my cell that sums up my feelings...."it wouldn't take much for me to up and run to another life somewhere in the sun."

I would love the freedom but I couldnt live on a boat permanently. I would miss my garden :cloud9: .

We used to own a cruiser that slept 4 and had it's own combo head (toilet) and shower and a full galley. It was pretty crowded with 4 actually sleeping onboard and only did that for weekend trips up the canal to Lake Champlain.

Sold the boat in 2000 and bought our DVC points with the money.
