Now, I knew that in Korea they ate some foods that many Westerners would consider off-limits - the most obvious one being dog.

But I did not know that they ate squid and octopus live. I was so shocked when I came across the footage on YouTube. I was searching for videos associated with the raw and living food lifestyle.

Well, I guess I kind of found what I was looking for!

And, really, I'm not the type of person who feels even the slightest bit nauseated by images or videos - it's smells and tastes that are more likely to make me throw up. But this left me feeling a bit :scared: .

I'm not debating whether it's right/wrong/cruel (I mean, different cultures have different traditions), and I'm not supplying links unless asked for (and they can be found fairly easily on YouTube anyway), but I was just... shocked. Not sure why :confused3

Anyone else know of 'weird' food and eating traditions..?

OOOH!! I must go look now! I have just discovered YouTube and have been glued to it most of the day.

I watched a show on Discovery once about gross delicacies. The one that sticks out the most is rotted whale or something like that. They packed the stuff in an ice shelter and let it rot for months. They said the smell was horrendous and had "an aquired" taste. BLECK!

Disgusting. I've been on dive boats where people bring up scallops and eat them live. :crazy2:

I've seen something about eating live squid and octopus. If I remember correctly, you have to swallow it quickly because the tentacles will stick to your throat. Gag!

My sister ate octopus when she was in Holland, she said it was a Mexican restaurant.
ETA --It was no alive though! yuk

I saw that whole live squid thing on tv a few years ago. Now that's something I do not plan on trying any time soon! :crazy2:

I love sushi, raw foods are fabulous, but I don't need my food to try to eat me back. :crazy2:

They did an episode on CSI about this. It was pretty yucky. Of course the person was murdered by someone who blindfolded her and fed her the octopus wrong, or something.

Ack... I love raw seafood, too, but that is just too raw for me. lol :crazy2:

I have heard about cooking placenta due to cultural tradition which is not for me either.

Well, I went and looked. YUCK!! I could never eat anything that I had to chase around my plate! The live octopus just wasn't enough for me, and I had to do some more looking. I found one called Frogs! and I nearyly "croaked" watching that one. :rotfl: (slaps knee. I kill me)

Raw seafood does nothing for me...now, a tasty little grasshopper is a whole different story :rotfl:

EEWWWWW!!! Looked up the video mentioned on youtube. gag!! Double EEEWWWWWWWW!!

Eating a live octopus was one of the challenges on The Amazing Race a few seasons back. Chip and Reichen tried to eat one each. I don't remember if Chip or Reichen ate one, but the other couldn't.
