I'm writing this from outside the Green Cabin Room - no free internet access in the rooms yet. We have an OVIR with a full ocean view - its a handicap-accessible room but we can live without the bathtub.

We arrived yesterday and have enjoyed clear, hot weather in the mornings with clouds in the mid-afternoon and rain by dinner time.

The beach is lovely, the water refreshing but not cold, although others might disagree. I have collected a bagful of seashells already.

We tried out the pool this afternoon. It seemed to me that the lifeguards are selective about whom they correct - a kid whipped a ball across the crowded pool and hit the corner of my eye...hard enough that I saw stars. That sort of rough play was in fact witnessed by the lifeguard but not corrected.

We ate at Shutters tonight - the best thing I can say is that it is "uninspired" cooking, We ate at Squid Lips last night and it was 10 times better than Shutters.

There is a Wal-mart Supercenter about 8 miles away and we bought DD12 a boogie board for $9 - what Disney charges to rent one for the day!

We haven't signed up for any of the activities yet. The Japanese fish printing looks interesting. DD12 is the crafty sort but DS13 is on the autism spectrum and would rather watch DVDs all day!

We hope to do the nature walk with Mary Ann later in the week and maybe the campfire. Not sure if the Turtle Troop would be worth the $80?

Its supposed to rain all day Wednesday so we are thinking of driving up to KSC. At the very least, DH wants to visit the Navy SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce.

That's it for now!

Glad to know Wal Mart has the boogie boards. I was planning on buying them for the twins in July. I am anxious to hear about the Navy SEAL Museum, being a former sailor myself. If you go let us know how it is. Do they let adults do the crafty things that are offered? I know my boys wouldn't want to do them but I would love to. Thanks for sharing your trip with us.

I am continuing this trip report from the comfort of my room - I am able to access the wireless connection while sitting at the dining table.

We just returned from dinner in Vero Beach proper - we tried Nino's Cafe - its very good, basic Italian - tiny place but wins all sorts of awards with the locals. The tourist area is practically dead yet the prices in the stores remain sky-high..

Today turned out to be gorgeous despite the weather forecast of mostly cloudy. We are planning on KSC tomorrow because the forecast is for all-day rain.

We have not done any crafts yet - most have a fee and a minimum age so I suppose an adult could sign up without a child with him/her. Its been impossible to drag the kids away from the beach...still hope to do the nature walk while we're here.

DH, who is recovering from quintuple coronary artery bypass surgery, did
6 1/2 miles of the Jungle Trail (walk) today on the resort grounds and surrounding area.

Thursday is Member Day - free mini golf and $1 off drinks at GCR.

Has anyone been to Mel Fisher's Treasures Museum? Hard to tell from the outside if it would be worth it.

Any questions? I'll do my best to answer them.

I really liked Squid Lips! We ate at Shutters twice for dinner, the flatbreads taste just like those from AP at SSR. The other night I had whatever the fish special was and that was excellent. Also did Easter brunch, which was very good also.

I have an Autism Spectrum 11 yr old. He loved the arcade and mini golf. Mine likes to sit and watch tv. Both him and his 7 yr old brother love the fact there is "real cable" at VB. Cartoon Network and Nick, plus History channel. Though he really surprised me and tried boogie boarding!

Only have to wait until April 4, 2009 for our next visit.

We were very fond of our dinner at Nino's Cafe - and at Squid Lips - you've eaten at two of my favorite restaurants so far - great food for a reasonable price. :thumbsup2

Glad you're having a great time!

Okay how do you get to Nino's Cafe from the resort?

I'll put it on our list for our next trip.

Yes, directions anyone? I want to try it in August.:goodvibes

Go left when you leave the resort and follow that road into Vero Beach. Nino's is next to the public park/beach right along the water in the little retail district - close to the Driftwood Resort.

We got two pizzas and I had a decent glass of their house Chianti and our tab was around 40$ including a 20% tip. :thumbsup2

Mem....thanks so much for the live report ! We can't wait to check-in this Aug !

Yes.....a few years back. It's very small. You can do it in 30-45 min. If you stay and watch the movie (add another 20-30 min). Not even sure if they still show the movie. The museum is interesting in that it explains how the whole area (Vero/Sebastian) became known as the Treasure Coast. They have lots of the local treasure that has been found over the years---mostly from the Spanish ships that went through the area. There is a very small gift shop attached to the museum. My kids enjoyed picking out replicas of gold coins found in the area in the form of necklaces.....my son picked out a shark tooth necklace.
VERY small museum---can't stress that enough.

The building's a shipwreck. A PT conservator at the museum therefore a bit biased and will leave it up to you. The small Sebastian museum was redone inside last year. New movie. 1715 Fleet artifacts are still being found. There is still a bunch out there
Don't forget about the McLarty museum. It was the site of one of the 1715 fleet survivor camps It is on AIA north of the resort. State run and very cheap to enter. Enjoy your stay. Today's the Day!pirate:

Its MEM again, continuing my TR. We spent most of yesterday at KSC and then visited Cocoa Beach for Ron Jon's Surf shop and dinner at a place the locals like called Grill's Restaurant and Tiki Bar.

I was not lucky enough to get free tickets to KSC - I'm from Massachusetts and contacting my rep only got me put on his e-mail list!

We spent about $160 to get into KSC - I guess I'm glad we did it but feel no need to do it again. The kids and I were positively bored by some of the exhibits but did enjoy both IMAX movies. DH61 loved the Rocket Garden best of all. KSC really, really needs a Disney consultant to help them manage crowds and their food court. KSC reminds me of Epcot and Tomorrowland in certain places but maybe I was just looking for similarities.

Today it rained at 10:30 a.m.so we got in an hour of beach time. DH tried the Turtle Walk lottery but it was filled after the first 5 room keys drawn.

One suggestion about the ocean here - many folks complained about it being cold and even my very skinny DS13 came out periodically to "warm up" I bought him a rashguard shirt at Ron Jon's and that did the trick. I never thought to pack the one he uses in our chilly New England waters.

Thanks for suggesting the McLarty Museum - we're headed there shortly since the weather is still rainy.

You're welcome. Hope you have enjoyed your stay. :)
