I want to get a live tree this year, but have never had one before. How early can you get one ? Also, I have heard about putting asprin in with the water, how much should I put ?

Thanks
Kelly :flower:

We'll hunt and cut down ours on 12/3 and it will last until New Year's. If you buy one that's been shipped in, it won't last as long.

I've heard about the asprin trick, but never done it myself. Just keep water in the holder.

Usually, around here at least, we start seeing "live" Christmas trees about the week of Thanksgiving.

We get a "live" tree ("live" in quotes because the tree has been cut down, therefore it is technically dead) every year. We vary the tree type year to year - sometimes we get a fir tree, sometimes a spruce.

Anyway, the best way to make sure it stays nice and pretty and full is to keep it WATERED!! No aspirin or sugar or anything else - just good old water. Do not let the water level get low. The tree will get dry and brittle quickly if you do (remember....it's now a dead tree).

Also, keep it away from any type of heat - heat will dry it out.

I always either put aspirin or a commercial tree and flower saver in the water. When I put aspirin in, I usually put 2 or 3 in.

I think the thought behind it is that it opens up the *pores?* of the tree so it sucks more water.

When you get your tree, make sure to have the bottom of the trunk freshly recut so that it is not all hard. This will help the tree suck up water too.

Check the water level EVERY DAY! KEEP IT FULL!

We always get our tree the weekend after Thanksgiving, and it always lasts until the weekend of New Years.

Are you talking about a tree that you can plant in your yard when you are done with Christmas or one that you or someone else cuts down and you throw out after you are done?

We buy ours around the 5th. We don't use aspirin- we put sprite in the stand instead of water. The reason is that the tree thrives on the sugar in the sprite and lasts longer.

Thanks guys for your reply's !

golfgal - It will be one that we cut down then throw out after Christmas.

Intresting about Sprite !!!
Thanks, Kelly

I want to get a fake tree this year. The children are resisting though.

Keep water in your tree or it will form a "seal" over where you cut it- a tree "scab" if you like.... then it won't drink anymore water and it will dry out quickly.

We get ours Thanksgiving weekend. I figure we'll take better care of it than the tree place.
Keep it watered. We get between a 10 foot and 12 foot tree each year and it gets watered at least 2 times a day....sometimes 3.
I don't think I'd use Sprite, but only because I'd be afraid of attracting bugs.

My family has been using Sprite for 20yrs and never had a bug problem. Of course it's a little cold in New England at Christmas for bugs.
