a bump to my own post....
Has anyone actually bought any of the live action dvds that were released on Jan. 14? I'm not sure of any outlet besides
amazon.com....
It looks to me like six live action films were released on Jan. 14th: The Absent-Minded Professor, The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, Gus, The Horse In The Gray-Flannel Suit, and The Moon-Spinners.
I suspected that these would not be labeled "vault disney" and from the pictures on the web I think that is indeed the case = haven't purchased any of them, but from what I can tell from reviews on the net these are simple transfers of the laser disc releases, with no attempt to clean them up or present them in the correct aspect ratios. If this is true, it is a real shame. I can understand them not getting the 2-disc treatment, but good lord at least clean them up before pressing them. I am relunctant to buy.
I understand that Disney's DVD sales market is probably different form the rest of hollywood - it seems to my naive self that for most studios and most movies, most people won't buy the dvd unless there are a lot of extras on there, because they can rent it, etc. But, I think some people figure that disney is different, and that most people buy the dvds to babysit their kids and just want a plain jane "why can't they just release the plain old movie" release and not a double dvd. I hope that is wrong, but I can see that there probably is a segment there - however, it seems to me taht the market for these old movies isn't the kids as much as the fans, and so they should get a better treatment if Disney wants to sell more of them - if you follow what I'm trying to say.
I thought that, from the work that went into the background materials, that the 20K luts dvd release would be in the vault disney series, but the cover art for it looks like it won't be, either. Looks like disney dvd has abandoned the "vault disney" series just like the "gold" and "platinum" series. At least this should be a high quality release.
So does anyone have any of those Jan. 14 released movies? If so could you comment on the quality?
