Little Man and "THE" Height Requirement?

So we are less than two weeks out and last night we stuck DS's shoes on him, stood him up against the wall with a board and did the measurement. He is exactly 54". He knows that he may or may not make the mark and we've told him not to get his hopes up but I can see the light of enchantment in his big blue eyes at the prospect of riding Hulk and the Dragons.

I'm torn between being happy and excited for him :woohoo:.

Or scared ****less because I secretly don't want him to ride. :scared:.

So my question is have any of you had a just 54"er? And did they make the mark? Or did they have to wait until next time? It's tough being a kid! Just don't want to see the heartbreak!

Make sure you go to those rides first (you probably would anyways!) As they walk throughout the day, theoretically their spine shrinks some, plus their shoes get worn down some, and they get tired and slouch more. I'd also recommend making sure you have a good pair of shoes. Not high heels, but tennis shoes can vary between giving the kids 1/4 to 3/4 or so of an inch and all look like regular tennis shoes. Maybe even buy a new pair (I've found the character ones from somewhere like Target tend to have a more built up heel) so they're less worn down.

We went to DL/DCA when youngest DS was like your son - exactly 52 inches with shoes on (there were several 52 inch rides there). I didn't think he'd make it so we tried at Knott's Berry Farm first on the Xcelerator. They measured him and let him on with no problem.

When we got to DCA, at that time they had a measuring station where they used laser lights to measure and give them a wristband. He got the 52 inch wristband and we headed to Maliboomer (kind of like Dr. Doom at US). He rode it easily, both that day and on several other days (we spent 5 days at the parks). On the last day, we headed there (hadn't gotten the wristband in a couple days because we "knew" he was big enough) and they insisted he was too short. We realized that his other shoes had gotten soaked and we'd switched shoes and these were just a bit smaller. No big deal - he'd ridden it several times. Went back to the hotel in the afternoon and switched shoes. Went back there and AGAIN they insisted he was too short. Don't know if he was shrinking by the end of the day or what, but he didn't meet the line.

So I'd recommend trying both rides, even it he misses it at the first. I'd prepare him that if he makes one, he may not make the other, or may not make the first one a second time. Teach him to take a big breath and stand tall and try hard to "be tall". Enforce that he NOT stand on tiptoes because once ride operators see that, they'll be over-vigilant because they think he's trying to sneak on.

As far as you being scared of him going on, I know the feeling. Shortly after that visit, we went to Cedar Point (Ohio) for the grand opening of Top Thrill Dragster. If you're not familiar with this ride, it goes 120mph, pretty much straight up, then spirals straight down. It also had a 52 inch height requirement, which by then (3 months later), he made easily. We stood in line 3 HOURS for the front row, and when he got in, they insisted that although he was "tall" enough, he wasn't, um, "hefty" enough. Apparently the lap bar had to come down to a certain point and his bar didn't come down far enough so he couldn't ride. Devastating, but better than falling out I suppose! We went back a couple weeks later and tried again (this time using parent swap so he didn't wait as long) and they insisted he was fine. I mean I POINTEDLY asked to make sure he was okay, and they said yes. Well, I spent the entire ride gripping his arm (yeah, I'm sure that would have helped if he fell out!) and really was terrified every time he rode it that year. I do know on all the height restriction threads, lots of people have insisted the actual requirements are probably like 6 inches lower to adjust for different body types, slouching, people "padding" their kid's height, etc. So, since your son is actually really 54 inches, I'm sure you have nothing to worry about, but I certainly understand! Good luck!

Though not 52", my son was 40" at our last trip and no one measured him at all - even for the 40" rides, like Spiderman. They just let him on. He's barely 42" this time, so we shall see what happens on the 42" rides. When we went to a fair, they said he was too small for the 42" rides without even measuring him - but my 6'5" husband was holding him. I'm only 5'1" so I think what happens is that my son looks much taller next to me. Maybe have him standing next to the shorter parent!

the toughest park in Orlando about measuring is Seaworld. WDW and Universal usually give the kid a high five and make them feel good when they're close enough to make it.

Its going to be tough. If he is that close, I recommend stuffing and extra pair of socks or tissue in the shoes. The height marker at the bottom of Hulk said my son was tall enough, and after we waited in line for 30 minutes to get the front car (wanted his first time to be special) the lady pulled him out and measured him on the wall. 1/4 of an inch too short. But we measured him and he was exacty 54. And funny thing, later that same day he was able to get on Dragons. So just make sure he stands straight up.

Chrisn-

I will be eager to hear your results. My boy is 53 inches with shoes right now, and we go in 6 months. At that time, I am guessing he will be right at the cutoff. I do not want to get his hopes up if he is right at 54 inches.

A related question. Does anyone know if universal's height measurement tools account for shoe size (i.e. their 'stick' is really 54 1/2 inches tall to account for shoes)?

Thank You,
Steve

In January 2006, I bought DS 2 new pair of sneakers. 1 to wear then and one to wear on vacation (with a couple of "broken-in" days prior). At his yearly check-up, I had him wear the new sneakers and asked for him to be measured in sneakers first. He was 53.75"! Okay, I thought...only 1/4" to go. So, after school was out, I let him wear the "new" sneakers to "break-in" before going to UO the end of June. To be on the "safe" side, I had bought children's Dr. Scholl's inserts for his sneakers (not taking a chance). I told DS that these inserts would make his feet more comfy while walking (turns out later down the road, he did think they were more comfy to walk in)...while my motive was to add that little extra height. We were at UO for 5 days and he was measured maybe 4 times--if that. I was really surprised how often UO did NOT measure anyone looking "close" to the height requirement. The nice thing about Hulk, was the 54" marker was mounted on the wall...no stick to question the height of. Hulk maybe measured him twice, and it was the same gal (since we had FOTL w/ onsite key...we rode a couple of times in a row each time we rode). DD measured him a couple times...again, same person at re-ride (rode, got off, went bak in line, rode again type thing). He didn't really be as precise as he could have, guess he was just checking for a "guess-timate". Your DS should be okay...but, I found if DS stood straight up and tilted his chin down a little, the highest point of his head would be up; whereas if he put his chin up to be straight, the highest part of the top of his head was behind the measuring stick.
So, after my winded reply, I recommend to get some newer shoes, so the sole isn't worn down, check out the drugstore for some children's inserts and prepare him for the worst but hope for the best :thumbsup2 Good luck to ya!

The restrictions are there to keep your children safe. I hope you don't plan on sueing anyone if your child gets hurt!

My son was five when Islands opened. He was not tall enough so we set up a game... the minute he was tall enough we would BOTH ride the Hulk.

6 trips later he made it. Six GREAT trips later. All children have to know that there are requirements in everything in life that there are ages and heights and sizes when certain things are acceptable. My son was disappointed those six trips but realized it was something he could look forward to.

The minute he was ready we took a picture of us on the Hulk and he noticed my hand was holding down HIS harness. He said, "Mom, your hand is on the wrong seat!" I told him, "No, it wasn't".... :thumbsup2 He's turning 14 next month and I still cherish that picture.

OOOOH, OOOH, OOOH, PICK ME, I can answer that!!

My son is about 53.5" tall. The measure must be set for 54", because he rode Hulk and Dueling Dragons several times last week. They took him out of line at Hulk a couple of times but he always measured up. If your son is 53" in his sock feet now, he would probably be ok now with his shoes on.

We were worried about the same thing, and prepared him for the worst, just in case.

Or to any other enquiring minds...

It was not clear whether you were addressing me personally or not. Just to set the record straight, my question was based only on curiosity and other people's experiences. It was never my intention to get ideas in order to "cheat the system." If he makes the requirement, then he will do so standing tall with his normal shoes.

I know there are many differing opinions on this topic and that's ok. My post was just a simple question and I am not here to judge.

P.S. WE LEAVE TOMORROW! I'll check in when we get home and let you all know how it went. robinrs: Too funny about your hand on the restraint. DH and I had already discussed "sandwiching" him in. I think I remember when your Michael? was finally tall enough. Been around the "DIS" boards since 2000.

yeah, not sure who was being "addressed" there, but my DS was JUST 54" in shoes and I know how the "measuring sticks" at amusement parks can be "off"....so, I was being honest, I just didn't want the park's measuring stick to cheat my DS. We had been at Dorney Park just a few weeks before UO and their sticks were off...had to go to GS to get "officially measured" (which is something I was told UO does NOT do!) and it was a pain. Besides, I would NEVER jeopardize my son's well-being.

I would agree with this comment if the discussions above were talking about adding inches onto the rider's height. They are talking about adding 1/4-1/2 inch! I can pretty much guarantee that 1/2" will not affect a riders safety. If it were two inches that might be another story.

You can go ahead and harp on 'rules are rules'. Speed limits are rules too, and I know how nobody ever exceeds those by a little bit.

One other suggestion I would make is to make sure your kid know to "stand up tall" while being measured. A kid was being measured at our local Amusement Park (Kings Island). They have the type where there is a bar the needs to touch the top of the head. When the kid was being measured, he would subconsciously duck his head when the bar went by instead of letting it bump his head. The ride operator saw what was going on and ended up checking him about 7 or 8 times before it bumped his head and was allowed to ride.

Of course you would never do anything to put your child in harms way, but what DVC was insinuating is that you are by amping their height a little, and in a way you are. The height requirements are there because at heights below 54 inches...and just below 54 inches....they tend to get jostled around in the the harnesses and can cause head injuries.
However, it depends on the size of your child and your personal judgement. My son is naturally large. He was 12 lbs at birth and has been large for his age ever since, large in frame, not in weight. He was fine on all coasters. My daughter however, is tall for her age. She is 5 and is 50 inches....but skinny as all can be. She is, in my opinion, too small for rides like Mummy and Primeval Whirl because of her skinniness. She will get bounced around way too much. So be smart when trying to get younguns on the rides.

Just returned yesterday and my 3 year old son had no problems - though it wasn't for the Hulk of course! Though he's 41.5 inches and his shoes don't add all that much, he easily made the 42" minimum on Men In Black. He rode it 6 times and had no problems. I wondered if the height bar was half an inch off, since I really thought my son was barely 42" with shoes. He made it by at least hald an inch, if not more. At MK I chatted with a woman at Thunder Mountain Railroad. I mentioned that her daughter must have just made the cut-off. The height was 40" and she told me her daughter was 39.5" in shoes but still measured tall enough. So, that's two rides at different parks that I don't think had the height measurement exactly accurate.

I agree....the only accurate measurement is at the doctor's office (imho)...but, I won't pay all that money to take my son to a park, with his and our hopes up, knowing he IS tall enough, only to have their measuring devices deny him....he was just 54" (maybe a quarter inch over by then actually-too close to call) and I wasn't going to let the "park's unofficial measuring device" cheat him (or us) when we are being honest by waiting to go there till he was tall enough and having DS be the correct height....there's honest and dishonest and "the good guy doesn't always finish first" and I wasn't going to let my DS be disappointed...besides, like I mentioned, he did think his feet felt better after walking around all day in the comfort-soles. FWIW, when we were at Dorney a few weeks before UO, I forgot to bring the insoles and I said to DS we can roll up some tissue in your shoes (just to be sure he'd get on). Well, I look back and I'm so proud of his comment to me..."but, Mom, that's cheating and that's wrong". I agreed and told him let's just go see if he was tall enough to get on. Well, after using 2 different devices to measure him, he "just made it" and the gal at the gate measuring the kids suggested we go to GS to get an official measurement and wrist band (which, didn't help for the other coaster until I argued with them)...but I know UO doesn't have an official measuring station for this which is one reason I bought the insoles. DS would have probably made all the rides without the insoles, but I wasn't taking the chance, especially knowing they didn't have an "official place" to be measured. We were comfortable knowing he was safe...he (& us) had a great time too...can't wait to go back!

He made the mark and got to ride! He was exactly 54" when we left. He did BARELY make it though. At Hulk thye first CM said he's "right there" they will measure him again and they did. Then they took him off the coaster and remeasured him but he made it. They did look at his feet also. Poor little thing was sooo worried when they took him off but sooo excited when they put him back on. DH and I each held onto his bar handles and it was so cute. As soon as the ride was over he pumped his fists in the air and shouted "THAT WAS WICKED!" Later on that day DH rode it 4 times in a row with him! On DD, he again barely made the mark at the first CM but nobody ever remeasured him. He rode both dragons and proclaimed that Ice was the superior dragon but Hulk was still his favorite. We had a great time and I was thrilled he got to experience everything.

Well, tell him from me....welcome....to the first day of the rest of his addiction. I'm glad he made it and glad he loved it. Now you need to get him to BGA for Sheikra and the others.
