Next year we will be taking my parents with us on our trip to Disney. My dad will be 60 and had a heart attack a few years back. Is there any type of list circulating of attractions he should/ shouldn't plan on? Thank you!

I'd probably leave the bigger roller coasters and Mission Space off the list for sure.

His heart attack was a few years ago and he's not that old. If he's in decent shape now there shouldn't be too much he can't do. He needs to check with his doctor for any restrictions and take it from there.

That's a pretty open ended question - I've got a friend that had a heart attack at 34 and he's still an EMT and rides everything. I've got an aunt in her 50s that has never had a heart attack but can't ride anything anymore because she just doesn't have the stamina. (Well... beyond a merry-go-round I mean)

If his doctor gives him full clearance I'd say no problems with whatever he feels up to.

I'm five years post-MI, in mid 50s, and my cardiologist has given *me* full approval for anything I feel up to.

I've done Mission Space Orange once since the MI but I feel more comfortable with Green. Otherwise I do all the WDW attrctions.

I generally will only ride one side of Dueling Dragons at IoA.

Having said that, my medical condition may not be the same as your father's. Always check with your doctor for your conditions.

There is a list of rides with warnings over on the disABILITIES FAQ sticky on the disABILITIES forum. WDW only has very general warnings, and it is entirely up to the guest to determine whether a ride is safe for him/her. I'd advise your father to speak with his physician regarding restrictions.

Enjoy your vacation!

Age 45 here and now well-recovered from a serious MI (the widow-maker!). I am now able to do anything I did beforehand. But, like several PP's have pointed out, no two MI's are the same, and while I nearly kicked the bucket, my youth seems to have been greatly to my advantage. Only you, your Dad, and your Dad's doctor can be the judges of what he is or is not capable of.

Remember though, he has a vote too, and how he feels about his readiness matters regardless of what the doctor says. For example, while I was cleared for normal activity about 8 weeks after my event, it took me a year before I felt I could trust my stent and my overall health enough to behave like I did prior.

Good luck and have fun!

I'm 52 years old and have a broken neck which will always be broken but it's healed. I stayed off Disney "thrill rides" for five years and thought I would always have to. Until I asked my doctor about it. His response was "I'm more concerned about you driving in Atlanta traffic and having a car hit you from behind than I am about you on a roller coaster".

My advice - ask the doctor.

My FIL just had his second heart attack in his mid-sixties (first one was at 47) a few months before WDW. He had no restrictions, and in fact has since resumed his normal road riding regimen. He checked with his doctor before we left and got the "all clear."

1) PLEASE ... He needs to check with his cardiologist!
2) Mine gave me approval for anything I felt comfortable with.
3) I would not, could not dream of touching RNRR, ToT, EE!
4) I really wanted to go on Splash Mtn, but I chickened out.:sad1:
5) When I was tired, BTMRR got to me for some reason
6) Watch his feet for good circulation
And
7) I'm 10 years younger than your Dad ;)

Enjoy!!

Yes as everyone else has said check with his Dr. first to see if there are any restrictions.I too had a heart attack and 3 stents put in then 10 months later another one and a quad bypass and due to complications I was on a ventilator for 13 days after surgery. I still have issues and all of this happened within the last 20 months. I still have breathing problems and don't do well with the humidity or extreme cold. My Dr. has given me my restrictions that I follow and I was just at WDW in April and he told me that to use my own judgement but insisted that I DO NOT do Mission Space or anything that may elevate my BP even for a very short time and to make sure I took rest periods from walking etc. I did EE,Star Tours,Dinosaur,TT,Soarin,TOT,BTMRR,PW and did just fine but I have always loved the thrill rides and I am only 47 years old ;) I did not do Space Mountain or Rockn Roller coaster not due to my health issues but because I was traveling with my sons family and mostly did rides with my young grand children. Just make sure he follows his Dr.'s orders and go at a pace that is good for him. I hope you all have a wonderful trip!

^^what he said too ! I left out rides like MS and SM tht I wouldn't go on anyway but OP, I hope by now you get the idea. :goodvibes

He needs to stay in tune with his heart n mind.

:thumbsup2

PP, stay healthy!:flower3:

I think he is at bigger risk of a heart attack when he sees the price of admission to the park.

Seriously, like people said already, his doctor is the best person to answer this question. I don't know that I would trust people on a message board(even the wonderful people on here:thumbsup2) when it comes to something this serious.

This is the second time today here on the Dis I have been referred to as a male :lmao: For the record I am a female ;) And thank you for the well wishes for my health!

I have another trip booked for this November with my adult DD and DGS(age2) and hopefully another trip next year with my other sons family so I can get to experience Disney through all of my grand children's eyes for their 1st visits pixiedust:

I am more worried about flying this time(we drove down in April) than anything else.I have flown before several times but that was before my health issues. But my Dr said I am ok to fly so that is a plus.:goodvibes

Been there, done that. Had a heart attack, went to the ER and was stabilized. While waiting to be air lifted to another hospital, had a second heart attack which the nurse later told me, "put me in the realm of the warm dead." They brought me back. When I arrived at the second hospital, I had a hemorrage behind my left eye and they couldn't do surgery for another week. Had a quadrupple bypass since three arteries were completely blocked. Since that time, I have been to WDW five times and have done and ridden everything I wanted, including Everest, RNR, Tower of Terror, Space Mountain, etc. etc.

Only two people know the limitations for your dad; the cardiologist and your dad. The thing that irked me the most, and still does, is being told by others (mainly, my kids), "You shouldn't do that with your condition." My response is that I don't have a condition. According to my doctor, I am in better physical condition than I was prior to my heart attacks. I watch what I eat and get plenty of exercise. I acknowledge when my body tells me to take a break.

When others tell me not to do something because of my "condition," I find myself wanting to push myself just to "show" them that I can do it. So, even though your intentions might be good, you may be doing more harm than good. Let your dad decide what he can and can't do and don't harass him about it.

I hope the OP really takes your advice So beautifully said How wonderful that you are still here with us Hopefully as more time passes your family will not worry so much Take it as the sign of loving you even though it feels frustrating

Thanks everyone, didn't realize this was such a passionate subject! So glad most have recovered nicely and can still enjoy Disney at its fullest. I suppose I was thinking of rides that often warn pregnant women or people with back issues against riding, many also mention people with heart conditions. I was assuming it would've been more of a black or white situation and didn't know if there would be any strange no-rides. I'm sure he will be avoiding the crazier coasters, I can hardly handle RNRC and I'm only 28! Thank you!!!

Blessings to everyone!!!

Stay Healthy!!!:flower3:

Totally the best advice, along with all of the other posters that mentioned getting a physician/cardiologist for an "all clear". Not sure I would want to get my medical advice from anyone other than my doctor (in my case numerous kidney issues over the last few years).
