Do you think it is okay for a child to eat a dessert that has Kahlua in it? There is 1 Tablespoon in the whole dessert, they are dessert bars.

Usually alcohol will cook out of an item easily- I would think it would be all right.

I think when you bake something with alcohol in it ,it gets baked out and just the flavor remains,so I think it would be safe to let them eat it.Besides,if it's just one tblsp. for a whole recipe how much alcohol would be in each bar?

When you heat the Kahlua the alcohol evaporates so you are just left with the flavor.

Like every one has said the alcohol has evaporated during the cooking process.

The bars sound yummy.

Kaluah in Brownies all the time. Like the others said - the alcohol evaporates

I have a dessert I make that has Creme de Menthe in the frosting, 2 tablespoons for frosting for a 9 X 11 pan of brownies. I thought about subsituting mint extract for the Creme de Menthe so my kids wouldn't get alcohol. The mint extract had a much higher percentage alcohol in it so I stayed with the liquor. If you are worried about alcohol in food, check out your vanilla which is 35% alcohol, or 70 proof, which I am sure is higher than Kahlua. It is eye opening when you start comparing the alcohol content of some common things.

Bottom line, go with the Kahlua.

Exacty, Carol! I had a friend whose sister was an alcoholic (she ended up dying from it). When she couldn't get alcohol she would drink vanilla extract.

one tablespoon in the whole dessert isn't going to hurt anyone, even if the alcohol didn't bake out.

I agree that one TBSP total will be fine, unless maybe you didn't mention that the desert only serves one or two. :) However, alcohol doesn't always cook out of everything, especially baked goods. I've seen food scientists talk about how most of us would be surprised by how much alcohol is left in foods that aren't boiled for several minutes.

I think that it is OK for a child to eat this dessert, but if it is a really good dessert then the adults should eat it first and if there is any left over then share with kids. All kidding aside, as has been mentioned the alcohol does not remain just the flavor.
