liquid ban on planes could be lifted

Your title is misleading since it won't be "soon" the technology is still a few years away to be deployed a all airports so it will be awhile.

the link i clicked on said "soon" sorry if that was misleading (now fixed)

The technology is actually a few years from deployment at airports, officials say. For one thing, the Transportation Security Administration has not yet partnered with a manufacturer. Then, of course, will come a period of testing and certification.

I'm not holding my breath!

And between now and then something else will happen, that will cause all of that to become null and void and travel items even more restrictive..

I wonder, do many people find the current limits on liquids really that restrictive.

I can't think why I would need to carry full size containers on a flight anyway.

The article mentions shampoo, yea coz I always wash my hair in flight, the only time it can be a nuscience is maybe for a body spray because you don't nomally buy them in smaller sizes.

A few years ago at London Heathrow, I saw a chineese girl getting stopped at security for having liquid in her bag which had not been declared. I saw 5 full, large tubes of toothpaste removed before I had gone through. Geez, how many times do you need to brush your teeth in flight or don't they sell toothpaste in china?

Putting full size containers of your shampoo into a checked bag can result in shampoo everywhere, shampoo missing b/c someone wanted it or it fell out, or if your bags get delayed or lost then you don't have your shampoo. People often buy perfumes while overseas, and it would be awful to have that break open in your checked luggage (even if you buy perfume in the secure area of an airport and have it marked so that you can carry it on (which doesn't happen in all airports), if you have a connecting flight that causes you to leave the secure part of an airport, you cannot carry that on once it's out of the secure area). etc etc.

I'm sure they sell toothpaste in China; they have it in Korea, and it's what DH has been using since he ran out of travel size while there on his last business trip there. But people often bring home western stuff like that; my MIL brought allll sorts of stuff lke that to her siblings in Korea when she visited, and she ships that sort of thing to that from America as well.

DH, DS, and I use Toms of Maine no-fluoride toothpaste, and that's hard to find in travel sizes, let me tell you! So if our checked bag goes missing, even for 24 hours, and we don't have that, we either have to make ourselves tummy-sick from a fluoridated toothpaste, or just brush with water until we can find a place that sells it...

Just answering your questions of why it's a hardship.

Oh, hair products are a problem as well...gel, goop, mousse, etc...don't always come in 3oz sizes!

Well as far a buy perfum oversea's and putting it in check luggage. All you have to do is take some bubble wrap on your trip to wrap it in as well as a small plastic box and you should be fine. I just traveled home with 4 bottles of wine in my luggage that were wrapped in bubble wrap and put in a rubbermaid toter. I ask the ticket agent for a fragile sticker and it arrived safe a sound.

Does anyone know if you can take an empty container. Like a water bottle? I can't seen to find that...thanks didn't mean to hijack tread...:goodvibes

I've taken empty water bottles and filled them from a fountain after I've gone through security.

I kind of hope that the liquid restriction stays the same. Eliminating it will just mean more carry on bags and I think there are already too many. Delays departures and encourages some to take luggage they cannot handle themselves. I'm tired of getting bopped on the head just because I prefer an aisle seat!

Thank you, I have one of those water bottles that have the insert that you can freeze and was wondering if they would allow that thru if not full of a liquid...did not want to lose it. Maybe I should take the gel freeze insert out? Thank again for info....Carol off to BWV on Tues:goodvibes

Many people, myself included need to bring our toiletries on the plane not to use in flight (LOL) but because we don't check any bags.

We never check any bags, and for the most part I don't have too much trouble packing our allotted amounts of liquids in our carryon. Though I do have Bumbershoots same problem with finding the little size of Toms Toothpaste! I'm flexible though, so make do with other brands when necessary, or squeeze the Toms into a different container that is the right size. I'm not a girly girl though, so really don't have need for many liquids. ;)

I am looking forward to them lifting the liquid ban though, once less thing to think about when packing and when going through security.

If they do this, it will just slow things down again at security, etc. and encourage the over sized carryons.

My preference, is to ban all carry-ons except for one small personal purse/backpack/briefcase and make all bags be checked.

Bet boarding and takeoffs woudl be much quicker.

The liquids ban is a major pet peeve to frequent travelers such as myself (100,000 per year flyer.) I never trust that an airline is going to have adequate bottled water on a flight (this is especially a problem on international trans pac flights.) Since I can no longer pack my own bottled water I am forced to pay airport extortion prices vs grabbing out of my own fridge for pennies. Sure you can fill up at a water fountain, but many times fountain water just tastes "off" so I budget $10 per round trip just for water.

I don't think I have ever had them run out of bottled water on a flight - even n the 16-18 hour flights to Asia. sometimes they run out of individual bottles, but still always had large 2 liter bottles to pour from.

Usually, I see the international crews packing up a few bottles each at landing to take to the hotel from all that is left.

United on the NRT (Tokyo) flights run out all the time. They hold back some for themselves which really peeves me. FA's each take a large bottle on long flights. If they serve from a bottle without the label or from a pitcher then it is filtered airplane water, which I am NOT drinking. This is one of those dirty little secrets. Ask an FA next time. There are plenty of threads on flyertalk.com that discuss this problem.

PS - Not sure what flights you are taking but the only Asia flight that is 16-18 hours is the all biz class Singapore Air flight from Newark and SQ has top notch service, so if your only experience is SQ on the EWR-SIN route then you have a charmed life. ;) If I am flying anything US based (UA, CO, DL, etc.) then I am packing my own for the latter part of the flight. I let them pour from the big bottle early in the flight but switch to either my own bottled or airplane provided sparkling when the dodgy airplane tends to start coming up.

The only thing I'd like to take on the plane is water. I have a hard time coughing up $3 for a bottle of water post-security, but I still do it. :)

I'd rather do that than wait for 50 people in front of me toeach have their 15 second MRI's of their liquids.

Actually, that being considered, I'm happy to keep paying $3!!

I have flown SQ quite a bit, but also fly many long nonstops on CO

EWRHKG, EWRBJS, EWRPVG, EWRDEL, EWRBOM and have never had water issues.

I have always been given as many individual bottles as I wanted with seals on them.

Also had no problems on Korean Air, All Nippon or Cathay either.

Though on these long flights, I prefer Gin and Wine anyway! Helps me to pass out and pass the time.

When I find time I will search for the threads noting the bottled water issues. In all my time on CO long haul biz class never was I given more than one small individual bottled water. After that it was from the big bottle and once I found out that if the label is removed or served from a pitcher indicating that it was filtered plane I water I stopped drinking anything that comes from the big bottles.

EWR-BJS = 13 hr
EWR-BOM = 15 hr
EWR-PVG = 14 hr
EWR-DEL = 14 hr
EWR-HKG = 15.5 hr

There are no flights in the 16-18 hours range from your list.
