IDEAS PLS!

My 7yo dd has a habit of licking her lower lip, even below lip on chin. She also puts lower lip in mouth with uppper teeth sucking on lip. She has no idea she is doing it. Our recent WDW pics show her rash like chin/lips. Have tried lotion, chap-stic, etc to heal it. Any ideas on rash and ideas on how to get her to stop this.

Thanks

My oldest son has had this same habbit. It took me a while to figure out that he did it most when he was worried about something. At the begining of last school year it was real bad. When we delt with what was bothering him it got better. That and lots of gentle reminders and lots of chapstick! He is almost 10 now and hasn't had a problem with very chapped lips and above his lips for over a year now. I bet your daughter may outgrow it too but it may take some time. Lots of gentle reminders helped. We also asked his teacher to help remind him while at school. Maybe it could help to give her something else to occupy her mouth like gum? That's all I could think of. I hope it helps just to know someone else has been there. We have lots of photos of my son at Disneyland with very red chapped skin above his lips! :teeth: Good luck!

Hi, my 9 year old son also has the same habit. We keep him so well stocked in chapstick, I think I should buy shares in the company! We also use the "No Bite" stuff that is used for fingernail biting and thumbsucking, I use it ever so sparingly and not directly on his lips but paint a tiny spot above his top lip in the center as a reminder for him when he does start licking his lips. It tastes awful and has worked wonders to help him. I would never use it on skin that is already irritated and sore though. It's never irritated his skin and is so far the only thing that has worked to remind him on his own without someone telling him to stop. Medicated Blistex works well to help in healing when his lips are already red and sore. Hope that helps somewhat, I know it can be frustrating! One other thing I've done is polish my skills enough in Photoshop that I can edit the chapped rings around his mouth out of the pictures! lol

My dd licks her top lip a lot and gets that chapped look sometimes especially if she does it at school on the playground in the wintertime. I buy a lot of chapstick type stuff (not chapstick, we prefer other brands) and keep them handy--she has one in every coat pocket, in her desk at school, in the car, in her backpack, etc.

I also remind her to apply it whenever I can: before and after school, after dinner, and especially right before bed to help heal it. I use the more medicated types of lipstuff at night. I also taught her to apply it beyond her lips, since that is actually the red chapped parts.

Make sure she is really drinking enough water. Maybe she is licking her lips when she is thirsty. Chapped lips themselves are a symptom of dehydration--then you lick them because they feel dry, etc etc it's a vicious cycle. Licking your lips actually dries them, since saliva is so acidic. Teach her to take a drink of water when she is feeling like licking her lips. If she downs a whole glass each time, it will help, I guarantee it.

HMMM...I have some of the Lanisonah stuff...never thought about that! Of course it would be safe since I can use it during Breastfeeding - I just wonder if it will taste bad enought that it will keep her from wanting to lick! I really think it's just a habit now - i think it might have started as nerves, but now she just does it all the time - when she's talking, playing, etc... GOnna try the Lanison stuff---gonna go find it...

It doesn't taste bad enough to discourage licking (I've used it on my own chapped lips and I don't remember it having any taste at all), but it's difficult to lick off, so it will protect her lips/skin from her licking and help the area heal. Breaking that habit is another story!

I have always sworn by a product called "Lipfix" by Elizabeth Arden. It is a special cream that is for the lip area, and it really helps with severely chapped situations. It doesn't taste like anything, it is really more like a lotion for the lip area, and if you put it on right before bed, and then when you can remember to apply it during the day, you will see a big improvement. It can be used in conjunction with the chapstick type products, too.

Good Luck.

Could she also have an allergy to something? I developed a terrible rash on my lips in August that lasted for about 8 weeks. I even went to the doctor. She had me discontinue the use of all chapstick/lip balm products and I could only use Vaseline. It helped a bit, but not a lot.

I systematically went through all the changes I made to my environment in mid-August: the new squishy foam pillow, the lip balm (new brand), toothpaste, etc. Finally, I figured it out. I tried a new toothpaste for about a week. I didn't like it, so I stopped using it and went back to my regular toothpaste (same, brand "Arm and Hammer", different formulation). I was so allergic to the higher concentration of whatever was in the new toothpaste (the tartar control stuff, I think) that I was still having reactions to the smaller concentration of the same stuff in my regular toothpaste. I changed to Dr. Burt's Natural Toothpaste and *poof* the rash went away in about a week.

Lansinoh is perfect for this. It lasts much longer than any lip balm, petroleum jelly, etc.

Thanks for that idea, my lips get really dry at night, and I am forever using chapstick, because I CANNOT stand the smell or taste of vaseline, makes me gag! Do you know if it's available in Canada?

I don't know, but the link in my post takes you to the company's website; you may be able to find out there. If not, it's just a lanolin ointment, so I'm sure there's something similar available.
