Linked ticket question

We are approaching our 60 day out mark and will need to link tickets soon. I will be doing this on my account for my family of 5 plus my mom and dad. However, dad hasn't been feeling so great and may possibly have to back out at the last minute. So, here is my question...

Once his ticket is linked to him on MDE, if he ends up not going on the trip, will that ticket forever be linked to him? Or in the future at some point, would I be able to re-link his ticket to someone else in my family for a future trip? My concern is that if he does not go on this trip, he probably will not go at any point in the future due to his deteriorating health and I don't want the ticket to completely go to waste.

He wants to wait and buy a ticket at the gate but then he won't have fastpasses with us.

Unused tickets have the option of being reassigned in MDE.
