Line holders

This argument is like trying to keep oblivious people from stopping dead in their tracks in the middle of Main Street at MK. ...or a group walking slowly side by side so it's hard to get around them. ...Is it a pain? Yes. Is it worth my energy to get worked up about it? Probably not.

There are going to be idiots (line cutters) at WDW, and unfortunately, we can't police them all.

It is all about respect for others and their time. No one's time at Disney is more valuable than someone else. I get that almost anyone would rather be doing something else and then jump ahead in the line to a spot saved for them - that is why Fast passes were born. So when someone pushes ahead of others in a line to "join their group" what they are saying is "we had better things to do than wait in this line so move aside"

I truly wish Disney would put a stop to this practice before an altercation turns ugly.

I agree. I want to lose my temper when people jump lines but I try to keep calm... Time for me to take a deep breath and just head to typhoon lagoon!

True.

But I also don't have to let them by. And since I am on a scooter, most of the time, and my husband is standing next to me. Well, it is hard to get by us. In fact, we have to move out of the way to allow someone by. And we don't. Not large groups.

  • No, it isn't right.
  • I have not had it done to me enough to let it bother me.
  • If there are 400 people in line in front of me and 4 more cut ahead, then the line has increased by 1%. My 30 minute wait has increased by 18 seconds. Again, is it right? No. But I won't let my blood pressure rise over 18 seconds.
  • Do I think that the exaggerated claims of one person holding space for 20 more happens with any amount of frequency that it is worth discussing? No.
  • Do I think that a line for a ride at WDW is the proper place for a confrontation that could escalate into foul language or physical contact with a bunch of kids around? No.
  • Do I know what every other person here has experienced with enough certainty to know that this is or isn't a major problem? No. I only know what I have observed, and what I have observed doesn't warrant action or confrontation.
  • On many rides, one or two people joining up with one or two other people won't change my place in line. All it does is make the vehicle ahead of me, (which I wasn't going to ride in anyway) more full. Instead of two people riding in Honey Pot #12, there are now four people riding in Honey Pot #12. My family was always going to be in Honey Pot #13, so my lot in life has not changed. At other rides, perhaps the cutting person/people push me back by one boat, or one mine train, or one rocket ship. Again, is that fair? No. Does it ruin my day? No.
Just my $0.02. Your mileage may vary.

Does it happen? Yes.

Does it happen enough for me to worry about it and put me in a foul mood on my vacation? No.

I'll let karma take care of them.

I agree MaryLovesPoohBear. ...and your situation helps make the offenders more obvious. Typically I would confront and put down that type of activity, but Disney just isn't one of those places I want to get my blood pressure going. I love the oblivious state of bliss we can be in at WDW. I don't want our bubble burst. :D

Our first visit, I firmly believe that we were probably one of those families that stopped right in the middle of the walkway with no warning. I'm pretty sure I hoisted our kids onto my shoulders at some point. We took a long time in line to figure out how to order a QS meal with the dining plan. I probably cut people off. :) ...but we never cut in line.

It's odd because I think of myself as a polite and kind person but I never really knew this was a problem before I got on Disboards. I would get in line with my family and if it was hot or someone was cranky/thirsty/needed the bathroom I would say "go grab a bottle of water and meet us back here". Or why don't you "take so and so and go to the bathroom just in case". Never occurred to me it was an issue. We all got in line and lines can be long. So of someone needed a drink, snack, etc. no biggie. Of course, I have traveled by myself or just with my kid and that wasn't an option. I always thought well that's just how it goes when you are alone. I think I once asked a family near me if I could bring my kid to get a bottle of water and be right back and they said sure. It was an outside line though so easy enough to do And I asked if they needed something. Of course, in my mind it's different for one or two to leave a group and return than for one person to hold for a large group. Common courtesy difference IMO. I know that "cutting" is wrong but never realized that stepping out of line and returning got so many people's blood pressure up.

Line holders don't bother me at all...I guess I just feel like someone was in line from the group... well done.

Is there a limit to how many line holders in front of you would not be ok?

2?

5?

10?

20?

1000?

How do you think that would affect the flow of the line, and the wait times experienced?

IMO, only special circumstances should be accommodated to allow by-passing lines.

What about character lines? Is anyone really losing time if they meet/greet a character all at once?

:D I admit it.... am a line cutter.

I am usually the one to park the stroller and I have stroller issues (need to make sure it has a perfect shady spot). My family does not have the same issues I have. :sad2: They go ahead and start waiting on line without me. So I am the one who you usually hear saying,"Excuse me, pardon me my family has gotten inline before me". This usually should not bother anyone because we are a family of 5 and I am not taking an extra seat or the wait for me before they get on because they do not want the Wrath of Mom.

Thanks for your candor--not judging. I think I'm fairly low-key on the line-cutting thing, relatively speaking.

But maybe you can answer this question w/o judging me, either. ;)

Is there some reason your family couldn't wait for you at the attraction entrance and all of you go in together?

I've honestly always wondered what the answer to this would be.

Although I do not like it when large groups stop and block main street, sidewalks, or entrance to an attraction, I do not think they are idiots, just excited, distracted, unaware, trying to keep their group together, or sometimes overwhelmed, and likely at some time I did the same. I just walk around them with little extra time or effort.

Your family needs to wait for you so you can enter the line together. Some of those lines are pretty tight and allowing someone to pass can be uncomfortable.

I have WDW/DL 16 times over the years and can not recall one example of a large group (10+) line jumping, yes 1-2 many times but at end of the day does that really delay your time to ride?? And since no CM is going to get involved, in this day and age I would chose not to get into a confrontation over it, and besides I am on vacation to relax not drive up my stress level by getting frustrated over things and people I have no control over and matter very little to my experience and enjoyment.

I haven't experienced many line cutters at Disney, but have seen enough posts on here to know that it does happen and more often than it should. We probably don't experience much of it since we don't wait more than about 30 minutes for a ride. The one time I do remember people cutting in line in front of me was at Disneyland at Grizzly River Run. We (my husband and I) were in line behind another couple. Their son, daughter, and a friend saw them in line, waved to them, and their parents told them to come join them in line. What really annoyed me, though, was when they said that they were going to go grab a drink and would then join their parents in line. They waited at some spot where a Cast Member is stationed (sorry I can't say for sure since I only rode the ride the one time). When we got to where they were, the cast member let them cut in front of my husband and me. They thanked him and he said it was no big deal. I went into bee with an itch mode and told the CM that it actually was a big deal as it was cutting which is supposed to be against park policy. He looked shocked that I said anything. To make it even more irritating, we were suppose to be on a raft with them, but they were really picky about where they would sit and ended up taking the first seats in the raft leaving only the ones all the way across the seat open. Anyone who has been on the ride knows that there isn't enough room to move around the raft once someone has sat down, either. A cast member comes up to my husband and me and tells us that we need to get in our seats. He then sees the problem, has to stop the moving sidewalk, and tell the family that they have to move around the raft. The mother absolutely refuses to move, as do two of the kids.My husband and I ended up telling them that we didn't care where we sat and if they wanted to get out so we could take those seats, we would, but that they were holding up the entire ride. They ended up doing just that.
