Linda Rondstadt!

These examples do have something to do with free speech, which is where the topic was headed. I do, however appreciate your reluctance to bring anything as negative as these arrests to the discussion. But last time I checked, free speech was still alive here.

My point here is that these are two different situtations. The examples you add top the thread are censorship and have a valid comparison to McCarthyism. The Rondstadt example (which was the only thing mentioned until your post) was clearly not. I agree that the the examples you mentioned are bad and those involved should be prosecuted, but that doesn't make what the Alladin did bad by inference.

And who said anything about free speech being dead here? You are welcome to state your opinion, just as I am free to point out what I see as inconsistancies in your argument

Here's a link to a Vegas paper's write-up of the event. Sounds like Linda was not in very good voice and was not performing "as advertised". The audience was riled up and caused minor damage. It was time for her to leave the premises. The upshot for her is that people are now talking about her and she's in the spotlight for another 15 minutes.

In recent years, she has begun to appeal to a much older audience with her Nelson Riddle style music. (Of course, her peers are also AARP members). She can believe whatever she likes and express her opinons. However, when she is being paid to entertain that's what she should do.

The majority of the entertainment industry is very liberal. However, when an entertainer does express an oppossing view they are very often attacked, too. One example -- Tom Selleck took a lot of abuse from Rosie O'Donnell when she invited him to appear as a guest on her show.

Ronstadt at Alladin

Hey Pam. So good to be in a thread with you. Even if I wanted, I can never disagree with anything you say.

A couple of months ago I read that Linda Ronstadt said in a recent interview that she would never sing her greatest hits again.

Jimbo:

As far as knowing your audience. You are right. Maybe she was looking at the big picture and not only at that night's audience. According to CNN's poll (I know it is not official, thank you, but still it is representative), 58% of respondents think the Aladdin was wrong to do so. Also, she made the headlines in every paper and TV station in the world.

The winner: Linda Ronstadt.

Exactly, WDW Hound.

Free speech does NOT mean that everyone has to agree with you.

"It's a real conflict for me when I go to a concert and find out somebody in the audience is a Republican or fundamental Christian. It can cloud my enjoyment. I'd rather not know."

Seems Linda gets upset at her audience too, it's not just a one -sided thing..... poor baby, maybe she should ask for everyone's political leanings before she will sell them a ticket.

Sounds like a bigot to me...

Joe, we can agree on that!

Half the time I think some of these celebrities "take a stand" more because of the publicity they'll garner than for any real understanding of the issue.

Another interesting observation, Pam, is that these celebrities are usually, well, how should I put it? Past their prime?

What a cheap, easy way to regain some publicity . . .

::yes:: ::yes:: ::yes::

My first thought when I saw this thread (before I even opened it)?

Linda Ronstadt still tours???

Linda doesn't even really sing political songs to the best of my knowledge...

I don't see why she cares what the politics of her audience is.

I also cast my vote for them to learn a little self control and shut up. I appreciate that they are passionate about issues, and would certainly not want anyone to be apathetic. But there are better channels for enthusiasm.

I'm always disappointed that I even have to know the politics of entertainers I enjoy...no matter what it is. It always needlessly colors the experience I pay them to provide.

ITA! I actually find myself going out of my way on occasion to catch a movie with someone that has made known their political views and those views differ from mine. Why? I have no idea. Maybe just to prove to myself that I can keep the entertainment part of me separate from the political part.
I only have one name on my boycott list. George Clooney.

And the right to free speech does not include the right to be heard.

Just one man's opinion.

Richard

Well said tarmand on page 1!!!!!! I'm not going to debate Ronstdadt's "right " to espouse her political views. Just don't espouse them when I am paying for your time.

I have a couple more that one on my list....but Linda Rondstadt is not one of them. She truly has one of the world's most incredible voices. It would be an insult to God to ignore that over politics, IMO.

"I've been dedicating a song to him – I think he's a great patriot – and it splits the audience down the middle, and they duke it out," she said.

Oh goody. Even though a lot of people have paid her a lot of money for tickets to her concert in the expectation of being entertained, she purposely goes out of her was to antagonize them and induce a situation where her audience "dukes it out". Ah, thats entertainment.

Wow, that's pretty bad. Why would you want to antagonize your audience on purpose? Maybe it's time Linda goes back to Blue Bayou.

as is a few others, Linda included, but she was on my list before this incident.:o As far as her singing voice--its OK, not as great as she was.

I guess we could say, "free speech is not free."

Of course we are all free to say what we wish, as long as we're adult enough to accept the consequences of it. Responsibility, it's a witch.

as long as we're adult enough to accept the consequences of it.
...and there's the part that so few of these people seem to grasp.
