Does one need park tickets to dine at one of the resorts (i.e. Storyteller's Cafe at Grand Californian)? I assume no like at WDW

Short answer is NO :)

The only hotel which is inside Disney security is Grand Californian.

If you have a dining reservation you can enter through the front door. The alternative way, if you just want to check out the lobby is to go through Downtown Disney. To enter Downtown Disney you will have to go through Disney security and bag check. The actual park entrances are at opposite ends of the esplanade and thats where you need park tickets.

Disneyland Hotel and Paradise Pier are not inside Disney security so anyone can walk in from the street.

The Grand isn't actually inside security. You go through security when you leave the Grand and enter DCA or Downtown Disney.

You do need a dining reservation to enter through the front door, as mentioned. You do not need park tickets, though.

If you do make a reservation for either Storytellers or NR, keep the confirmation email handy on your phone when you enter the hotel. Sometimes the CM on duty at the front asks to see it, so it helps to have it ready to go.

Just to clarify since the OP is new...there are three ways to enter the Grand Californian Hotel. The front door from the street, from Downtown Disney, and from California Adventure. Anyone may come and go into the hotel to and from DTD and DCA, only the front door is restricted to only GCH Hotel guests and reservation holders so others staying offsite do not use it as a shortcut. Some previous posts make it sounds like the GCH is off limits which is not the case.

Everything in the Grand, DL Hotel, Paradise Pier and DTD you can access without park tickets.

Is the front door restriction a new thing? We’ve been going to GCH every summer for years, and not once have we ever been asked to show room keys or anything else when walking in the front door after driving or Ubering back to the hotel.

Yes. Ever since they expanded the security bubble to include DTD. There is now a security checkpoint headed into DTD from GCH and they limit access now for walkups from the street so those points do not get backed up any worse for the resort guests

Thought I'd share since it hasn't been brought up but on NYE I noticed there is a new (to me) gate on the street side that can only be accessed with a room key. Makes me think that the only way into GCH is through DTD or DCA unless you have a reservation of some kind.

That gate has been up for a few months now. You can use your room key or buzz to give a CM your reservation confirmation number.
