We use both names. DH's family called them lighting bugs, mine fire-flys so the kids refer to them either way.

Apparently I'm the only one so far who calls them fireflies.

I love to sit in our sunroom on a warm summer evening and watch them all over the yard. It's magical.

They are called lightning bugs in NJ.

both - although I think "lightening bugs" is being used more to the exclusion of "fireflys" which I heard/used more when I was young - many moons ago!!!!

Wow, this poll surprised me. Is it a regional thing? I just heard the name "lightening bug" a few months ago on a show my dd was watching. We've always called them fireflies. Interesting!

I chose lightnign bug in the poll, but we also use firefly on occasion.

Btw, saying Firefly always reminds me of the show/spaceship.
