Sounds like a flint issue. New flints are pretty cheap.
Just be sure to turn off the gas and let things vent for awhile if it doesn't take right away. Unless of course you think your eyebrows are too thick and are looking to change things up a little.
We always buy fairly inexpensive grills, because I'd rather buy a new one than clean it. I always thought that the auto-start breaking was because we purchased cheap, but our neighbors got this huge Lynx grill last summer and when they went to fire it up this spring, doh.
We bought a department store special.... like $100. The starter still works 4 years later. The other half wants to convert it to natural gas (must be a guy thing) I told him under no circumstances is he to mess with my functioning ignitor!
We had to use the Bic lighter thingy until I happened to be on my phone with my dad one day. I was complaining about how I hated it when dh wasn't home to light the grill because I was probably going to blow the whole thing up.
My dad says, "Did you replace the battery in the ignitor?"
Me: ----- dead silence ------ "the what?"
My grill has a spark igniter. One time it took too long for the igniter to work, when it did all of the accumulated gas lit up in my face. Felt like a strong puff of hot air, nothing on my face was hurt, which surprised me.
Jeez...time for new contacts. Mine are blurry and I thought it read "fighting your gas grill." Guess that was my WTH moment of the day...so far...the night is young!
