Both of mine got confiscated. Lighters are no longer permitted for travel from the US to the UK. Been in force for 2 months now. No one told me!!! :confused3

Only matches allowed.

why are lighters more dangerous than matches? :confused3

Customs themselves seemed confused by it. We checked in prior at Downtown Disney using Virgin's early check-in. Nothing was mentioned until I asked whethers lighters should go into hand luggage or baggage. It was only then I got told neither. I had two lighters. One a freebie from a gift shop, but the other was a gift. So, we had to open our cases there and then :sad2:

The guy claimed Zippo lighters might be fine as long as they were empty of gas, so we tried our luck. It was picked up at the airport when going through the scanner.

Very odd when you can buy them on the plane itself and in duty free! a bit like the tweezer issue! if theres a terrorist on board, what are you going to do - pluck them to death???

I'd rather them not be allowed on board at all (whether lighters OR matches). And they shouldn't really be selling them on board IMO..

I thought all flights were non-smoking now anyway(?)

This was started a few years back if I remember possibly on the Spanish return trips. They were asking if you had bought lighters on the markets etc and confiscated them if you admitted it. This i believe was because of the manufacturing standard of them. It seems to becoming a blanket ban, but at the end of the day it is an ignition source tha they do not really want on board.

In response to "they sell them on board" etc... I will never forget an episode of Airport or Airline with the Russian lad where the woman was kicking off that why cant she smoke the ciggies that she had purchased onboard

I must have missed that one, too too funny, just like people that think they can smoke in the loos on the plane! Who would want to anyway? you can barely even turn round in them!

All flights are non-smoking and both airports have designated smoking areas, etc.

Does not help if you were bringing one back as a gift in the aircraft hold though.

Customs Guy did say that it is expected to be relaxed in the next month or so.

Orlando International also do not sell chewing gum due to the high maintenance :rotfl2:

I saw that episode of Airline too. The steward actually had a really smart answer. He told her "You can buy condoms in Boots but you wouldn't be allowed to use them in the store!"

Beware of sellotape too! ;)
We just travelled to Greece and there was a roll of sellotape in the basket of DD's pushchair (rushed wrapping on the way to a party I guess  )
It was confiscated going through customs - just in case we decided to tie someone up with it on the plane....... Oh well :goodvibes

maybe they knew you didn't have tweezers and were planning on using the sellotape as a cut price leg waxing treatment

Oh my goodness! LOL

Allowing matches on board a plane doesn't really follow logic does it??

"Sorry sir, we only permit the blowing up of our aircraft with matches now- not lighters anymore. Enjoy your flight......." :earseek:
