"Life" should mean "life"

Now, I'm an opponent to the death penalty on multiple grounds, but at the same time I consider the penal system to be too soft on offenders.

I mean, this guy, Andrew Day, stabbed Ellen Leach twice in the back with a Bowie knife at their flat in Farley Hill, Luton. He was given a minimum sentence of 15 years for this.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but when someone is sentenced to life in prison, away from society, they should stay there for life.

I agree. There is a guy here in DC recently sentenced for murder of his girlfriend. Her body has been missing for 10+ years. He got 12-15 with time off for good behavior! The poor girl has been missing longer than he will serve time for her murder. Unbelievable!

i don't understand it either - life should mean your remaining life.

I disagree; I think the penal system and the federal and state sentencing guidelines generally do a decent job. There are always outliers, but there are a number of competing aims of the penal system and the criminal system in general that are very difficult to balance. The point of prison is not only the punishment of the criminal. There are other concerns.

IMO, anyone that has done something evil enough to get life in prison needs to be shuffled off a high cliff...

In Iowa, the sentence for first degree murder is life in prison WITHOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF PAROLE.

I have got to say that I am a fan of "eye for an eye". I don't feel like I should have to pay for a murderer to live on the tax money I pay for the rest of his life. I never thought, growing up, that I'd be a proponent of the death penalty, but, well, like I said, they should get what they gave. IMHO, of course :)

I couldn't agree more. The system is way to lenient to defendants.

Right, like the safety of others.
