Lice strikes...Yuck!!!

We went through it too! it was just awful and I have BOYS! I had to notify both the grammer school and the pre school and that was 2 phone calls that I NEVER want to repeat! The pre school sent our notices that they was a case of lice and what they were doing to get rid of it. I had to notify both locker partners of my older DS (thank god I'm friendly with the moms!)
I washed their towels everyday, bedding, pillows, clothes, combs, jackets. I had to wash the couch throw pillows, blankets and covers and vaccum daily. I took the dog to the vet to be checked and had my van detailed! Rid was $$$$ and the 10 days in between treaments was a nightmare! It took me an hour every morning to get them ready for school. I washed their hair, rinsed with vinegar, used the comb and blow dried their hair EVERYDAY for 20 days!!! Don't forget to either wash or spray their backpacks too!!!!
I feel sorry for anyone who has to go through this nightmare....it's been 7 months and still I check their heads every other day, if I see them scratch their head I freak...

I also used Clear on my DDs' hair when they had lice...it helps loosen the eggs, making them easier to remove when combing.

Be careful with vinegar. My DDs' heads were so raw from scratching that the vinegar really stung. This was years ago, and the smell of vinegar still reminds them of that episode.

We just went through this with my DD about 1 1/2 months ago. One of the girls in her Daisy troop had lice and spread it to 3 others. We found out from the school nurse that this girl had had it for months and her parents had been in for counseling, but she sent her DD to the meetings anyway without letting any of the other mothers know. Needless to say, being a leader we couldn't tell any of the other mothers where it came from but I was a little ticked off.

One of the other mothers has a daughter with extremely long black hair. She had a VERY hard time getting all of the nits out. She finally asked her aunt who is a nurse and she told her to use mayonnaise and a metal nit comb. This combination worked beautifully. She was able to get all of them after that. The nurse said this is what they use on people in the hospital when they can't get all of the nits out.

We washed DD's bedding every day and took all of the laundry to the laundry mat and then kept it in plastic garbage bags for 10 days until we were sure everything was gone. All stuffed animals and couch pillows went in plastic bags. Cleaned and sprayed the car, and vaccumed everyday. I probably went a little overboard, but I don't ever want to have to deal with that again!

Good Luck! :)

A long time ago (likely 11-12 years?) my oldest DD had a mild case of head lice noticed by school nurse. I was very hesitant to use pesticides recommended on her so I went to a natural pharmacy who recommended a tea-tree oil shampoo. Now it was very pure and very smelly (unless you happen to like that smell) and after one use....nothing! Every time there was an out break at school...which was usually yearly at least...out came this shampoo and was used on both my daughters. We never, ever had so much as one again!

Oh God we went through this last year and it took 2 treatments for it to be gone plus I got them and had to be treated. We washed everything. Plus vacuumed the beds. Oh man it was awful and the week before Christmas to boot! I checked my kids head for months and didn't let him wear anything more than once for the longest time. Good luck.

Ok I have been scratching while reading this entire post, lol. My 2 ds got lice a few years back from my x's girlfriends ds. I got it from the 2 of them. Luckily we got rid of them after 1 treatment.
The whole thing was just gross. When ds #2 was in the second grade we got a letter from the school once a month that someone in his class had lice. they are not allowed to say who it is but you know by seeing the same kid midding every month for a couple of days. This poor little girl--looked like her parents never even combed her hair much less washed it. That had to be very miserable for the poor thing to have lice the whole school year.

We went through this last year. What a pain. Sue was on a Disney Cruise with her mom and her aunt, so I was left to fend off the little critters. When Sue got back, she found a special spray that sticks to the nits but not to hair. You spray it all through your child's hair, wait a few minutes, then brush the hair. The nits show up as bright pink and are much easier to pick. I think that DW spent two hours every night picking nits for nearly a week. We ended up getting a prescription for lindane since the over-the-counter products didn't seem to phase the live lice. Good luck. Keep at it. Eventually the lice will be gone.
