Liberty Square Pebbles

I read the following on a tour report on wdwig.com

Notice the brown pebble path inside the regular road that runs through Liberty Square. What did people throw out their windows many, many years ago?

What did the author mean?

It's meant to represent the muck and garbage that would have been flowing down the middle of the street back in colonial times.

Yep - we were told (when we took the Family Magic Tour) that it represented a urine trough for the horses (and people too I suppose). I think of that every time I see it.
