Libby’s Trip – Day 8 Royal Pacific Resort and IOA

Cast – Me 43 in love with Mickey Mouse
DH (of 20 years) 43
DS 14 cynical teenager
DD 11 a stroppy little madam

Location – 14 day holiday at Windsor Palms with 1 night trip to Royal Pacific Resort

Date – August 11th to 25th 2005

Thursday August 18th

This is the part of the holiday that I’ve been looking forward to the most. We’re spending tonight at the Royal Pacific Resort an hotel onsite at Universal.

We eat breakfast in the villa and I pack a few things into an overnight bag then we’re off to RPR. We reached check in at about 10:30 and find they have a room ready for us – this made things so much easier than I had planned.

The room was on the 5th floor of tower 3 with a rather uninspiring view of the roof of Tchoup Chop, but we didn’t mind for one night. It was a lovely room, but we didn’t stay for long. We put our valuables and video camera in the safe (we’ll do our filming tomorrow when we have to have the camera with us) and then go in search of the water taxi. We get off the lift in the lobby and walk downstairs to the taxi – we then find that it would have been quicker to stay in the lift until we reached the ground floor.

The taxi isn’t too busy and we have an enjoyable ride to City Walk. As we queue to enter IOA I realise that we’ve just put all our IDs in the safe so I keep my fingers crossed that they are not needed despite the signs. We’re lucky and get through quite quickly – a number of people are stopped who haven’t signed their tickets.

We go straight to Suess Landings which is almost deserted, and have a quick ride on the Carouseussel and The Cat in the Hat then have a look in the shop. I manage to buy a shoe bag style backpack which I’d been looking for all week (last time I used one of the freebee Virgin bags that the eyeshades, socks etc came in to carry our hats and sunglasses when on a ride, this year they had been a much smaller design so I had been looking for a bag since arriving in WDW).

We then went to Poseidon’s Fury. This hadn’t appealed from the ride description on the map but having read a trip report about it we thought it would be good. This was the first time we used our FOTL rights, but they weren’t really needed. The “ride” was actually a walk through adventure/show and we really enjoyed it.

We went back to Seuss Landings for lunch at Circus McGurkuss. I much prefer the fast food at Universal over Disney, but their serving and organisation leaves a lot to be desired. When we started there was only one girl serving from all 3 counters, but by the time we got to her all counters were manned and people behind us were getting served first. It wasn’t helped by a rather loud English family (of about 6) who had decided to go for the All You Can eat dining plan – and had decided to get their money's worth. I think they may well have been sick if they’d eaten everything they took. We paid about $7 each for our lunch and were free to eat in City Walk this evening if we chose to. They had paid $19.99 each and were now tied to eating in the parks if they wanted to get good value. (Rant over.)

We then headed off to the Marvel area where we looked at the shops before going on Spider Man. The ride was excellent and made even better by our FOTL access. The boys then went off to ride the Hulk. Even though I knew we wouldn’t have to wait too long for them there was no way I could wait here. The background noise here is so loud that it is unpleasant so we arranged to meet in Toontown.

We didn’t have to wait too long (I love FOTL) before we met up again and had ice creams. Next was Jurassic Park which I loved even though we got very wet. It’s now spitting with rain and we go to try and find the discovery center where you can find out about dinosaurs, but unless we were looking in the wrong place, it seemed to be boarded up.

The boys then rode duelling dragons. This took a while as although the rain wasn’t heavy the ride had been stopped in case of storms. After another look in the Marvel shops we took the water taxi back to the hotel. We changed into dry clothes and had a nap.

At 6pm we head back to City Walk. The water taxi isn’t running due to the weather (it must have been bad while we were resting) so we made the short walk which was quite pleasant now the heat had dropped. We had a look to see if anywhere took our fancy for dinner and ended up in the NBA restaurant. This was a lovely meal – I had salmon, the kids had ribs and DH had a cheese steak. While we were eating we could watch clips of basket ball games on the TVs. (This one one of the few places I needed ID to use my travellers cheques).

It was now nearly 8pm and there was an hour before Universal Studios closed so we headed there. It was quite dark and very eerie in the park, with not too many people about. We did Shrek which I thought was great, DS didn’t like it as he doesn’t like things flying out towards him (I still remember him as a 7 year old curled up on his seat at Honey I shrunk the Audience – we haven’t done that one since – but at 14 I thought he might have changed). He did notice that the three pigs cages in the pre show are made out of straw, sticks and bricks.

We went to do ET for which the FOTL was useful. The bikes seem to have changed since our last visit. As it was now near closing time I was keen to get back to the park exit. On the way out DH answered a questionnaire and was paid $10!

We could see that the water taxis were now running so we walked over to wait for one. There was a little boy in front of us, probably only 2years old, who was given a co-drivers license for the taxi. By the time the boat arrived he was asleep on his dad’s shoulder.

On the way back to the room we bought some drinks from the gift shop. DD wanted to swim in the hotel pool so she changed and I took her back down to the pool while the boys watched the Matrix on TV.

It doesn’t take us long to fall asleep that evening.

Great report Libby
we had the same problem with the heat
we had to go back to the hotel for a rest most days as well.
reading your reports brings it all flooding back

Wish I could afford to stay at a Universal Hotel - reckon FOTL has got to be worth it, in tself.

Sounds like you had a lovely day, despite the mini rant about the family on the Dining Plan ;) I do know what you mean, though - people often think they're getting a bargain when, in actual fact, they're probably not and then feel they have to go to excess to compensate.

Lovely report.

The Discovery Centre was open when I visited in July, perhaps you took a wrong turning?

My DS14 was exactly the same on our previous visits with 3D shows though this year he didn't mind them at all. He did jump a lot when things were coming out of the screen though. He still didn't like Terminator 3D though.

Lovely report - you didn't miss that much at the discovery centre, it was OK but I think they could have done more.

I can't find Day 7 - did the numbers get mixed? :confused3

Enjoyed your trip report, Libby. FOTL access rocks!! :cheer2:
