Libby’s Trip – Day 7 Epcot, Disney Quest, MGM

Cast – Me 43 in love with Mickey Mouse
DH (of 20 years) 43
DS 14 cynical teenager
DD 11 a stroppy little madam

Location – 14 day holiday at Windsor Palms with 1 night trip to Royal Pacific Resort

Date – August 11th to 25th 2005

Wednesday August 17th

We’re not so late up this morning and we try out Shoney’s for breakfast. I liked this place better than Golden Corral, although it cost a little more it seemed cleaner and newer. The buffet was delicious but didn’t have the weird stuff that was at GC (e.g. ice cream, puddings or cake). DH thought it funny that the waitress kept calling me “Honey” or “Hun”. We had to pay our bill at the till on the way out so we, rather uneasily, left a tip on the table.

It’s now about 9:30 and we head off to Epcot. Living Seas is due to close for refurbishment at the weekend so I want to be sure and visit it today. We manage to park very close to the entrance so we don’t need to take the tram.

We go to get fast passes for Test Track, but on the way we find that Mission Space has a 5 minute stand by line. The boys go off to do this while DD and I go to look around the shop as it is now seriously hot (there was a warning on TV this morning that it would feel like 105 today and be dangerously hot from 12 until 5). We had to wait over 25 minutes for them to return – but at least we found the video games and play area in a nicely air conditioned room through the shop. When DH and DS finally reappeared they said that the 1st shuttle they had queued for was taken out of service (they think someone was sick inside it) and then they had to line up for a different shuttle and watch the introduction video again.

We then went to Test Track and got fast passes for later in the day. DS got one for me too as he is determined that I’ll ride this – we’ll see nearer the time. We then went over to the Living Seas. DS hated Finding Nemo (possibly because one of the character’s shares his name – no it’s not Nemo!) so he isn’t too impressed with the changes since our last trip. We had a little look around and got in the lifts with a woman who was convinced we were going down the number of floors indicated.

It’s a shame there is no longer a little ride here. We watched the dolphins for a little while – it was weird to see lots of human legs suddenly appear at the top of the tank (no bodies, just legs!). We then joined the queue for Turtle Talk which I, quite reasonably, though would be a talk about turtles. But it was quite cute and even DS was seen to smile occasionally.

It was now time for Test Track so we melted our way back across the park. DH reckoned that if I could cope with his driving on the M25 then I could cope with Test Track so I decided to try it. I was a little nervous, but I’m very proud that I went on it – not something I’ll hurry to do again.

It’s now 1pm and the heat is unbearable so we decide to head to Disney Quest and an air conditioned afternoon. I must admit it isn’t my favourite WDW attraction but it was inside and we could have lunch there. Once there the main lift wasn’t working so we were let straight into the 1st floor. We take another lift and go upstairs to the café, I can’t remember what we all had except DD had pizza which she ate (for once).

After lunch we go to ride Pirates of the Caribbean. Unfortunately we fail in our mission and start to sink. Luckily the CM let us out before we drowned. We then went quickly upstairs to Aladdin where the male CM kept us amused with his Minnie Mouse impressions while we waited. I’m never very good at this sort of game and was even worse as I found my varifocal lenses didn’t focus too well here. None of us spoke to each other – we were too busy concentrating on how to control our own carpets. DH and I wanted to go for some cheesecake but the kids didn’t so we let them loose in DQ while we have a peaceful drink and some yummy, but huge, slices of cheesecake. (I think DH had strawberry and I had Boston Brownie). Before we leave we all go upstairs to play at rolling balls into a target (DD’s favourite game).

It’s now 3:30 and as we go outside it’s like walking into a furnace. We have a mooch around the shops and DS buys some computer game books (after he has tried to get us to buy him a PSP!) The heat is ridiculous now so we go back to the villa for a swim or chill out in the air conditioning.

At 6pm we’re bored so we drive over to MGM and have a quick tea at Pizza Planet (it’s only after we’ve eaten outside that we realise there is indoor seating upstairs!) We then go to the Great Movie Ride and ask if we can get into the gangster queue – we’re in luck they’re only using the gangster side this evening. Our delight is short lived when we find out our gangster is played by the same wet girl that was our cowgirl earlier in the holiday. It’s now that DS realises that the tour guides use a script.

It’s getting late now and I’m outvoted for a second trip to Fantasmic so we head for the exit. On the way I stop to buy postcards. The CM on the till is waving the scanner about willy-nilly and manages to scan the bar codes of some items near the till. He has to start again – then he rings up too many stamps! So he begins yet again.

We walk back to the car and return to the villa with a quick stop to buy some washing powder – with this prolonged heat we are changing more often than planned and the supplies of laundry tablets I brought from home have already been used up. Back at the villa I do some washing before heading off to bed.

Sounds like a good day today - the heat really knackers you out though, doesn't it :sunny:

I thought Living Seas was a bit empty when we visited and we hated Disneyquest, we couldn't get out of there fast enough.

Loved your report. :)

Great report - you did an amazing amount in that heat!

Back at the villa I do some washing before heading off to bed

Of course, you could have saved on washing tablets by going in some lovely airconditioned outlets and buying more clothes :rolleyes1

Sounds like a fun, busy day, Libby. Took me a lot of courage to get on Test Track too and still have to force myself onto it every time as it is DH's favourite ride. Congratulations on being brave.

I liked this :)

I agree the Pirates game is the best thing at Disney Quest (but the Cheesecake came a close 2nd).

My kids love DQ, they love to build and ride their own rollercoaster, shame the main lift wasn't working, it's fun;)

Enjoyed reading your report ~ Thanx for posting.

I think the cheesecake comes in first, LOL

so we, rather uneasily, left a tip on the table.
I always worry about doing this as well. Jon tells me it's fine and that all Americans do this but I like to know the server has had the tip! I think i worry too much

What a great day!
