Lexus "December to remember" AKA "the thread to remember" AKA "All Hail NU&

Careful now, we don't want this thread censored. That statement has a whole new meaning on the roadways of America.

I'm so glad I don't watch TV. I see I'm not missing much.

Lexus = glorified Toyota!

RUDisney, congrats on the "gift".

As for the ads, I would love to receive a Lexus as a gift since it's my favorite car. It might be a "glorified Toyota" but having known people who had both, it's extremely more glorified than any Toyota IMO.

"....and let it be known that Mermaid cooks one heck of a lobster dinner. She looks darn good in that K-mart scarf I gave her too"

Thanks WDWOT.... shouldn't have worn the scarf while boiling the lobsters though.... I feel badly about the singed fringe.... Thanks for the car though- ya know, today is my birthday and I'm gonna look really nice pulling up to the grocery store in that hot little number (the car, not the scarf);)

Evil Princess, I have it on good authority that OT once owned a Burberry scarf and lost it. Of course he had no clue what kind of scarf it was as he received it as a gift. And no it was not attached to any Lexi. :p

But that is just our little secret, OK. ;)

I must admit... if I had the choice between the Lexus SUV and the Volvo SUV, I'd pick the Volvo. I've driven both and like the V better. It has more toys built into it. I've also driven friends' BMW's. My DH offered me one of those once and I had to tell him that they are forbidden in our house. They are far too zippy and handle far too well. My guts grow too large when they are behind the wheel of a beemer. ;) I'd get my first of many speeding tickets if I had one of those. That would be bad.

Besides, I like to choose cars that my friends don't have. I don't want to be perceived as a copier.

Well, you tell him he can have mine. Plenty more where they came from. I got mine half off at the Saks Fifth Avenue outlet...but don't tell anyone, okay? ;)

Yeah, but didn't Opie and Anthony get fired this year? :(

Lexus = glorified Toyota!

There are 3 vehicles in the Lexus lineup that share a Toyota counterpart. The Camry/ES330, the Highlander/RX330 and the 4Runner/GX470. (The LandCruiser/LX is going away next year so it isn't counted). Contrary to popular opinion the Avalon does not have a Lexus counterpart (most people assume the GS) The Avalon is based off an extended Camry platform.

I can assure you having driven all 8 of these vehicles (extensively)that the Lexus offerings are much more than "glorified" Toyotas.

It's all a matter of taste and a buyer's willingness to part with more money for certain creature comforts/refinements.

The other Lexus vehicles are completely on their own Lexus. The IS, GS, SC and LS are among the most refined vehicles in the world...the LS in particular competing against the Mercedes and BMW competition costs 10-15k less than either and was ranked # 1 in a recent Car and Driver test over them.

So please don't generalize about Lexus' being glorified Toyotas. Saying that equates to the following Acura=glorified Honda, Infiniti=glorified Nissan, Cadillac=glorified Chevy and so on. Auto manufacturers make their vehicles based on certain niches. If you are a "car" person you are more likely to see the value in certain upgrades. If you just view cars as a mode of transport than you see the value in value. There's nothing wrong with that.

Ok, call me stupid....but what exactly does the WOW stuff mean?? I see that all over dirty trucks and always wondered *** the significance of that was. I must be missing something.

I agree with RUDis...the Volvo is certainly a good choice of SUV. The engine could use a little more power, but the safety features on that thing put it a step ahead its competition. SUVs tend to flip and the Volvo has done a lot to prevent that.

Speeding tickets? Did someone mention speeding tickets? There's a whole can of worms...don't get me started.

Happy birthday Mermaid...nice shells! You get them for a birthday present? (I actually have a pic of Mermaid in her new Lexus, but I'm not sure I can show it on this family board.)

EP, I humbly accept your slightly used half-off Burberry as a gesture of good will. In return I offer this lovely cashmere pashmina from Bloomies to keep you warm as you run across campus in the 20 degree weather.

All these changing topics...yeah it was a shame O&A got canned for that stupid stunt (if you don't know....don't ask it was bad and it probably should not be posted on this board). As shocky as they were they were no worse than Howard and shouldn't have been fired. They were very entertaining when sitting in traffic.

You forgot Audi being a glorified VW. I think we need to get ToyStory on the marketing team for Lexus. He does a much better job selling them than that ribbon commercial.

Interestingly enough, there is no Lexus for the Japanese Domestic Market. They are all Toyotas. So technically most or all of the Lexi DO have a Toyo counterpart. The Lexus name was only created for "foreign" countries because Toyo, like the other Japanese auto companies, wanted a way to sell their high end cars in the same market as MB, BMW, Audi etc...companies who don't sell models in the Corolla/Civic/Sentra class. It's all marketing. Just because a company can make an inexpensive car like a Corolla doesn't mean they can't also make a high end car like the LS.

OOPS! Forgot about Audi. There is Lexus for the JDM, they have just started selling the Lexus brand there. I have to tell you it was very strange seeing the Lexus cars out there with the Toyota Logo and the names vs number model designations.

As far as the marketing for Lexus goes my DW works for Lexus and I am a moderator on ClubLexus a Lexus Owner's website. I have been a car-nut all my life though...I can remember growing up helping my uncle wash his car just waiting for the offer to go out for a ride in it. "IT" was a 1960 MG.

Sigh...there goes one of my favorite factoids. I also found it funny to see the Lexy-Toyo counterparts with those weird names like Allion, Altezza and Aristo.

So wait...why am I the one giving out the Lexi to everyone?? ToyStory can get them for you, he's got inside contacts.

EvilP, I'm curious...do you have a Lexus on campus? I promise, in front of all the DIS Lexus/NU/WOW Club, not to tease you about it. I honestly don't see why you should be teased by other students about that. I recall seeing plenty of Bimmers, MB's and Porsches when I was there...and they didn't belong to the professors! Things must have changed...it used to be cool to have good stuff.

From the sounds of this thread, I wonder if anyone is sending out Lexus Christmas cards this year. :eek: And if anyone could PM me about the WOW thing I would appreciate it! :D

I think you can figure it out.....a couple of radio guys had Whip it Out Wednesday. Think about what one might whip out....

Well I am guessing it would depend on if you were a girl or boy. Anyway, I was thinking there is more to the story since people were fired over it. Sheesh. Maybe you are MEAN. :headache:

O&A weren't fired over WOW, they were fired for poor judgement during a contest in one of the "chaperones/judges" they had at the contest. The chaperone ignored warnings by the NYPD regarding one particular portion of the contest and allowed his assigned couple to engage in extremely lewd conduct in a church (we'll just leave it at that) The lewd conduct was awarded points depending on the location and the winners received a weekend trip as the prize. So O&A and alot of radio station management were fired over it (personally I think Howard didn't like them and this was the final straw) citing that they should not have allowed the site to be listed in the contest to begin with. If you know anything about NYC you can only guess which church it was. As a catholic I was appaled by the act, but not at O&A they ere doing their jobs and never thought that someone would be stupid enough to go through with it but unfortunately they misjudged the stupidity of some people.

WOW was Whip'em Out Wednesdays and you are correct it would be different for boys and girls. The jist of it was if you saw the WOW sign homemade or official O&A bumper sticker it was "okay" to WOW the vehicle occupants.

i will admit to skimming through these posts, but i don't get why some peole find it so unbelievable that people might buy their spouse a car for christmas. i don't think it is that far fetched. :confused:

TSF, thank you for the explanation. I heard about the church thing but I didn't make the connection.
