Letting Others Use Your Points

We should be closing in a few weeks & I was wondering.....

We have adult children who also live here in Tampa. How does one make reservations for their family if I am not going to join them? Can they do it or do I have to do it for them? Will they get the special benefits at check-in since I am the member?

You can make a reservation for them (in their name). They would only be able to make reservations if they are listed as members or associate members on your contract.

Benefits are a tricky question. Some require the actual blue card.

You would just make the reservation for them in their name. Provide them a copy of the conformation and they should be all set. Any changes or requests to the reservation would have to be made by you since you are the member.

What "special benefits" are you specifically referring to? I did get a dining discount one time when I rented points before I became a member. That happened because the room key said "DVC Member" on it. However, things may have changed and at times the actual membership card is necessary.

Adding them as associate members would allow them to make their own reservations, but I wouldn't advise it, since you need to know your point accounting at all times, and the more people using the account, the more difficult that can be. The discounts are supposed to require the blue card for the dinning discounts, but those are minimal at best, and not a huge amount to be concerned about. They will NOT be elegible for the AP discount, since they do not live with you.

some restaurants will give them the discount - just because the key (also ID) says DVC member.

others will demand that they have the blue card (this does not happen often)

the other discounts are in advantage - tours and such - and they need the blue card when they check in for the tour.

associate member won't cost you anything. You just need to call MS and ask how to go about that now.

being on the contract with you - requires payment - mind would have been over a $1,000 to have him on the contract.

So he is not. good thing too. a few years later he declared bankuptcy. the DVC contracts would have to be sold - which would have me mad. Since he didn't pay a cent on any of them.

My experience with my guests was that sometimes the discount-type perks were given to them, sometimes they were not. I have noticed more and more places requesting the actual membership card.

For most dining discounts, it won't hurt to ask, if they get it, great, if not then they aren't out anything for trying.

They definitely won't be able to get the Annual Pass discount, unless they live with you and present the membership card and positive ID proof that they reside at your address.

They will get all the "normal" perks that any other WDW onsite guest would receive. Free parking at theme parks, room charge privileges, resort delivery of park purchases, etc.

There for awhile we could not vacation-we were banking and donating to our daughter's Venture Crew, etc.
My Tampa family got the benefits of the points that could not be rolled forward.
I got some available dates from them and made reservations in their name.
They took advantage of the community room activities, but were not actively seeking boat rentals, etc.
You will be a favorite relative!!!
