Letting friend borrow car for 2 weeks

My grandfather owned his own insurance agency. My mom grew up with his way of thinking on this. My mom didn't even want me driving her car for a couple years after getting my license. I had had a few fender benders but nothing major.

My mom wouldn't let the neighbor borrow her car (good relations and a safe driver just didn't want someone else driving) and just drove the neighbor to where she needed to go instead.

I would not do this ever. Two weeks is too long and for someone who does not even have a car and not used to driving constantly, it would be way too risky for me.

If you carry one million in coverage then you are spending way too much money for nothing. You will be the first target of every lawyer the claimants have. Deep pockets.

A million dollar umbrella policy is pretty standard; not just for potential car accidents but it even covers you if someone gets hurt on your property. It's not the policy that can cause you to be sued, but your assets (the same as deep pockets suits). Those who have a lot to lose have even more reason to have the umbrella insurance policy. Even Dave Ramsey recommends them.

Firstly, how many people do you know that work in claims?
Secondly all the people I worked with over the years freely exchanged cars, why? We knew/know that we are covered and the chances of our personal assets being attached were slim to none. That is the benefit of being informed from working at it, rather than hearing tales and listening to an agent that is making a % of your premium.

100's actually as well as underwriters and actuaries in the business. I find it very hard to believe that you have settled all your catastrophic auto claims with no one having to pay anything out of pocket because they didn't carry enough insurance.

Don't really care what you believe. Not one person ever had to pay out of pocket. Maybe I am just a better adjuster than all those that you think you know.

Most people are nice and willing to let others use their autos. We carry insurance for a reason. Maybe you are very stingy and just using this as an excuse.

Do you actually drive your car? Because the same thing can happen when :scared1: you :scared1: drive it too. So sit in your ivory tower and feel protected. It won't help you when you need a friend.

Oh give me a break. Yes I drive my car and I carry more than a million in insurance to protect my family, I do not carry insurance to protect other people nor would I put my friends at risk by asking to borrow their car. I am far from stingy, I just won't let anyone that isn't on my policy drive my car. So just how do all these people whom you helped deal with catastrophic injury accidents pay claims above their insurance coverage or how do the victims of the accidents get compensated for their losses? If they are in an accident with state minimums they are told too bad? :confused3 I also find it hard to believe that and adjuster wouldn't see the need for at least a million dollar umbrella.

I hate when people start squabbling in the middle of a thread.

 I don't know what to tell you there golfgal. I could try and explain myself, but you seem not to believe anything that you don't say. So why should I waste my time.

I know what is true. I know what the risks are from both personal and professional experience and I am willing to take them, and to advise others to do the same.

I just don't understand how you can adjust out millions in medical bills so no one has to pay is all. You haven't explained that at all. So who pays when the insurance runs out? It's a simple question really.

I vote "NO" on loaning the car. As others have said, if anything goes wrong with the car or there is an accident, you are the one who is out of luck. Sure, your friend should pay, but does friend have the money to do so? Would friend just say tough luck and the friendship would then be strained or over? What is someone is seriously injured or killed in an accident while friend is driving? Yes, they will go after friend first, but if friend has nothing, they could also go after you as well. ARe you willing to lose what you have or have future earnings garnished so friend can use your car for two weeks?

Too many risks. Take alternative transportation to the airport or drive there and park the car.
