in my daughters school. It will be interesting to see how many parents keep there kids away from school.
It was only a matter of time. Apparently there are 7 schools in the Peel District School Board that have been hit.

We homeschool, so please forgive my ignorance about school policies, but do the schools do the same notification when a child/teacher/staff becomes ill with the seasonal flu? If they do notify parents, do parents keep their child(ren) home then? :confused3

New procedure for leaving the school.

LMBO. Thank you.:rotfl2:

To the OP, I'm sorry you have this worry. I'm glad things have mostly settled down in the media, but it's bound to continue to cause concern whether it's warranted or not, I know.

I guess Im going against the majority on this thread but I would be keeping my kids home

We live in Peel - What schools does this effect?

Im not sure how I will handle it if its in our school? Is it better for them to be exposed to it now so they can build some antibodies to it...? Kinda like chicken pox? Im sorry I am so ignorant to it still....
I guess since its hitting closer to home I should get more involved.

I would probably keep my child home as well...if one person has gone far enough through the process of finding out its H1N1 than its quite possible other children are infected by this point.
I don't think this is a illness you want to let your child get to just build up the immunity, people are obviously dying from it. And yes, I realize that people die from the regular flu.

I certainly would not WANT to let my child get it.

Just explaing that im so green (no pun intended) to the specifics of this flu and wondering if one could build immunity to it as more people are exposed to it. I would never want my children to get sick, I hope that I did not insinuate that :sad2:

I'm in Peel too. I have a 7 year old. I would love to know which schools are affected right now.

From the Peel Board of Education website:

On May 25, there are new confirmed cases of H1N1 at the following schools:

Terry Fox Public School
Robert J. Lee Public School
Roberta Bondar Public School
Levi Creek Public School
Mount Royal Public School
Northwood Public School
Beatty-Fleming Sr. Public School

go on the Peel Board website it will tell you

Between 4000 - 8000 people die of the flu in Canada every year. [according to http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/influenza/index-eng.php]

The Swine Flu can be included in this....it a flu with a name....but nothing new really. People die of the flu all the time.

Elderly and people with chronic conditions are at more risk than the general public.

I am not worried and neither is my DD. She knows the routine about washing hands and carry's hand sanitizer with her.

We had a letter sent home a couple of weeks ago from my son's school that there was a student in the school who had it but had been cleared from the doctor to return to school. Once the school was notified, they brought in a team of professional cleaners that evening and they did an "environmental clean" of the school the entire night. Not sure what an environmental clean but it sounds heavy duty. That was about 3 weeks ago and there have been no further cases found in the school.
Maybe ask the school if they too do a thorough cleanse.

Our kids are at school in Hamilton and there had been an e-mail sent home in the early days of the "scare" reinforcing that the kids were being encouraged to wash hands frequently and to back that up at home. They were also assuring parents that they were on top of the situation and if any cases were found at their school we would be notified. So far that has not happened.

What are the symptoms to watch for?

My BIL was told he had Norwalk Virus, but when I compare how sick my friend and her family were with Norwalk when they had it months ago-my BIL had a much more mild case if it really is Norwalk.

Now I'm wondering if it could be Swine Flu

Norwalk is a name they use when they don't know what kind of flu it is (doctor told me that)

H1N1 symtoms:

fever, which is usually high, but unlike seasonal flu, is sometimes absent
cough
runny nose or stuffy nose
sore throat
body aches
headache
chills
fatigue or tiredness, which can be extreme
diarrhea and vomiting, sometimes, but more commonly seen than with seasonal flu
Signs of a more serious swine flu infection might include pneumonia and respiratory failure.

I work in health care and this is just not so. Norwalk is a very real virus and is very common but you never hear much about it unless the number of cases have spiked dramatically. The same goes for most virus' and bacterial infections.
