Let's Talk Remodeling

how exciting! You are all making such wonderful progress!

I cant wait to see more pictures :)

Baseboards came up this morning and the flooring will be installed tomorrow YAY!

Ok - all my remodeling friends, I need your help and suggestions.

We're remodeling the basement. We have a basic bathroom down there - I'm guessing about 8'x5' - enough for a 37" vanity, a toilet next to the vanity and ending with a tub/shower combination. Very basic, very plain layout. The walls we had done in a shadowbox/bead-board type look that extend from the floor to about the light switch. Its done in a glossy white. That looks sharp, but now I need help with the tile.

I need tile recommendations - pattern, size, etc. I don't know what to do. I want a lot of pizzazz to dress up the room. However, with such little floor space and really only the tub area, I'm struggling with how to dress it up without it looking packed or cluttered.

Here's the fun part:
I will say that we have a connection with tile supplies, so there really is no limit as to what we can do. I was thinking of some glass tiles as an accent strip around the tub? I don't know what kind of pattern to put on the floor since the floor space is so restricted. Also, I don't know what kind of pattern I should do in the tub area without it looking overwhelmed. With this connection we have, I want to use any/all pricey stuff, but want to do it in a way thats right - if you know what I mean.

Help!! Any suggestions? I know you guys can help me!

I have a tumbled travertine backsplash in my kitchen. I love it!

I also have travertine floors in the hallway and secondary bathroom. They used the same travertine, along with granite inserts for the shower enclosure.

I have a had a problem with two of the tiles losing their filler. I've heard this can be a common issue with less expensive travertine, so you might want to watch out for that.

The bad thing is, I didn't go the cheap route when I purchased it.

When we get to that point, I will be sure to check into that. Thanks! I would love to see pics of the bathroom you've done. Did you post those & I've forgotten?

Glad to hear everyone's projects are moving right along! Exciting!

mickeysgal, The glass tiles sound like a great idea! What colors are you thinking of? No limit as to what you can do? Ohh BOY!!!

I'm not sure! I've posted them so many times on here, but I'm not sure if I have to this thread or not.

Did you check on Garden Web? There are some tile guys on there that post photos of their work and I've seen some really pretty, imaginative things.

I love the idea of the glass tiles! I also like mosiac tile strips, as accents.

Oh sure, go ahead. Post a picture of that vanity I want so badly!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Your bathroom is beautiful. The coloring coordinates so nicely.

No, I don't think I've seen this! It's really NICE!!! I love the granite inset in the tiles & the vanity looks very similar to the custom one we saw on Saturday!!! I love that!

Our walls are similar in color to what Am_I_There_Yet's bathroon walls are. Maybe a bit more on the muted yellow side.

I really need to learn how to post pictures.

I like the idea of some glass tiles, but I'm drawing a blank on how to lay them out in a pattern or strip so that it looks right. I'm thinking of smoky topaz glass tiles in just a feature strip of some kind - not all glass tiles. I also saw border tiles in a vine pattern (also glass smoky topaz) that I could use to frame the regular glass tiles.

I would like to do a pattern on the floor with 3 various sized tiles, but I'm unsure as to how it will look in such a small space.

I love the glass tiles idea. I was just looking at them today at the tile store. If I were working on a bathroom I would go with some of the sea glass tiles in there somehow too.

They had some that were wavy that I thought were beautiful.

as for layout I think I would be a little creative with it. There is so much you can do!

Very pretty! I love the toile!!

Not finished by any means but here are some pics of the "outside" part of our grand project. The pics a few pages back are the kitchen and some of the inside parts. In those pics you can see one of the solarium's out the window. They aren't finished yet, but they are looking better:

The larger solarium is about 26' x 26' with an inset glass room for a hot tub.

The smaller one - or they call it a "bump out". It replaces part of the old bay window breakfast nook. The roof was added yesterday. Inside is a temporary wall that will be taken out tomorrow I think that will open it to the rest of the kitchen.

A look up at the "high part" of the big solarium. The walls on either side of the chimney will be knocked out next week to open it up to the rest of the house.

Galahad, I can't wait to see the finished pictures! I'm sure you can't wait to take them either!

It's looking great! :thumbsup2

Shovan - we purchased that vanity. My cabinet guy can't take credit for that one.

Mickeysgals - ;)

Elizke - thanks!

Galahad, that solarium is incredibly beautiful. What a project. You've undertaken a major one there, haven't you? I'm not sure I would have had the stamina for that one although the pain of the remodel will surely fade when you enjoy that hot tub, thats for sure. :)

Just an update on our remodel. We had the granite people out to make the template for the basement kitchette. The contractor dropped off the quarter round and will install it in the next two weeks. We're getting close, yet seem so far off still. Once we move the furniture out of the garage area of the basement, the contractor can then get to the area where the storage room will be built. I will say I had a bit of a meltdown today - I'm frustrated with the clutter of everything seeming to be out of place during this remodel. It has affected both the main level, the unfinished part of the basement, and the garage. Today, I guess I just hit my limit. I'm better now though, I just had to get it out of my system. I spent a couple of hours this afternoon looking at bathroom vanites on ebay and websites. Its my hobby now. :scared1:

Isn't it fun?????

Did you ever decide on a tile design?

Galahad well done! You look like youre almost there!

Thereyet, that vanity is gorgeous!

mickeysgal, so close and yet.... isnt that the way it feels?

well the kitchen floor is HALF done  it feels strange to walk in there right now LOL. It will look wonderful but I will definately need to rethink the butcher block counters :( I am also going to need some serious paint advice.

So Galahad, when are you having us all over ;) ?
It looks very nice!

OT for a minute, but Am I There Yet we're heading to Houston Thursday - Sunday for a girls' weekend to see Wicked and shop. We're staying at the Westin Galleria and have reservations to eat at Artista before the show. Good choices?

Can you recommend any "must" places for shopping or dining?
