Tulips-Everyone loves tulips, besides daffodils they are one of the most popular spring bulbs. There are hundreds of different kinds and colors. They bloom from early spring right till summer.
They look lovely in rows, in large groups or in a small group. When mixed with other spring bulbs you get a display that only bulbs will produce.
Although I love all the tulips and I grow a wide variety of them some of my favorites are the Kaufmanniana tulips, they grow low to the ground and in brilliant colors. They look their best when planted in rock gardens. I also love the Tarda tulips thay bloom late. They have soft colors with yellow eyes. Another of my favorites is the lily-flowered varieties with their slender petels that give them a elegant look.
Whatever tulips you choose there are a few hints that will help them to bloom year after year. Never add compost or manure, as the bulbs could rot on contact. Dead-head the flower when it's faded, allow the leaves to die and dry out thoroughly before removing. Water once a week adding a soluble fertilizer so the bulbs will increase in size.
Tulips should be planted in ordinary soil in a sunny location, twice as deep as their diameter
