Let's talk about cereal

I always have at least 10 boxes in the house at all times. All different kinds, some good for you, most not. But I am really surprised that this isn't normal. I thought everyone kept cereal in the house.:confused3

And because of this thread I am out tomorrow morning for the Count.... I love that cereal!

This is totally normal.

It is the non-cereal lovers that are the deviants. It's not just my opinion but fact.

You can't be a cereal lover AND a serial killer. ;)

Cereal <3 Today I have Rice Crispies for a snack it made my day. I would love to eat cereal all meals everyday but doubt I'd get away with not cooking meals for my family and saying were having cereal dinner. I love Corn Chex's and Rice Crispies the most but I'm also a sucker for Cherio's, Kix's Captain Crunch etc. :)

I like real cereal for meals (bran flakes, cheerios, shredded wheat, chex) and kids crap for snacks.

I currently have two boxes

Both Whole Foods 365 Brand.

Peanut Butter puffs

Frosted mini wheats (which I consider meal cereal LOL)

I currently have a box of Chocolate Cheerios, Trix, some corn flake with dried strawberries in it ( can you tell it's not mine?) and my all time favorite,

Count Chocula !!!!!!

My mom has pictures of me at 3 years old, asleep holding a box. It has alway been my favorite.

Nope us non cereal lovers are normal. I mean really, cereal for dinner, GAG. lol. I am serious about the gag, but laughing about the normal and not normal part. But yep, gag, to cereal for dinner.

egads! Why don't y'all just eat cookies for breakfast?!

Barbara's Puffins and Fiber One are the only cereals you'll find in this house (along with oatmeal).

Oh, thank goodness someone other than me. lol. Most cereal is just so unhealthy. Carbs and sugar.

I ♥ cereal. A few years ago we went to a place in Chicago called Cereality. Cereal lovers paradise!

My all time favorite is Lucky Charms. Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Rice Krispies, Honey Nut Cheerios, are what I've been eating lately and I guess I'm abnormal because I could eat cereal for breakfast, lunch or dinner or all three!

I'm a college student. That should say enough about my cereal addiction right now...haha.

RIght now I have a box of:
Apple Cinnamon Cheerios
Cinnamon Toast Crunch
Corn Pops

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack....I'll eat it anytime of day right now. It's great for after my night class. I have one class that goes 7-10PM. I'm usually hungry afterwards because I eat dinner at 5PM, but I never want anything heavy since I am going to bed so a bowl of cereal is perfect:)

Does anyone else remember the classic SNL "commercial" Phil Hartman did for Colon Blow Cereal?

Colon Blow

Man.....Phil Hartman

[ fade in on a man at a table, eating oat bran cereal from a bowl ]

Announcer: Hold it! Is that what youre having for breakfast?

Man: Sure, haven't you heard? Fiber is really good for you.

Announcer: Well, there's fiber, and then there's high fiber. Try this.

[ offstage hands replace cereal box with Colon Blow cereal box ]

Man: Hmm.. Colon Blow. Sounds delicious. But is it really higher in fiber than my oat bran cereal?

Announcer: Take a guess: How many bowls of your oat bran cereal would it take to equal the fiber content of one bowl of Colon Blow?

Man: Two?

Announcer: Guess again.

Man: Three?

Announcer: A little higher.

Man: Four?

Announcer: Keep trying.

Man: Five?

Announcer: No, you'll have to do better than that.

Man: Seven?

Announcer: Guess again.

Man: Eight?

Announcer: We'll give you one more guess.

Man: Nine.

Announcer: Not even close. [ table starts shaking ] It would take over 30,000 bowls. [ a giant pyramid of cereal bowls shoots up from under the man, who yells in terror as it rises ] To eat that much oat bran, you'd have to eat ten bowls a day, every day for eight and a half years.

Man: [ after the pyramid settles; shouts from afar ] Wow! I think I get the picture! Colon Blow must be the highest fiber cereal on the market!

Announcer: Not any more, now that there's new Super Colon Blow.

Man: Super Colon Blow?

[ pyramid rises even higher with the man screaming ]

Announcer: It would take over two and a half million bowls of your oat bran cereal to equal the fiber content of one bowl of Super Colon Blow.

[ pyramid settles ]

Man: [ overwhelmed ]I'm convinced! [ looks down the pyramid in panic ]

[ cut to close-up of bowl with Colon Blow and Super Colon Blow boxes ]

Jingle: "Colon Blow and you-u-u-u in the morning"

Announcer: Colon Blow and new Super Colon Blow.

Voiceover: Warning: may cause abdominal distention. Consult a physician.

[ fade to black ]

I was not sure you could use the world "colon" on the DIS...

The Frankenberry I had for a snack last night seemed to be one of the healthier options for my snack.

Measured out 1 serving, with Skim Milk, and it was under 200 calories, included anywhere from 10%-35% of my daily values for 13 different vitamins and minerals. As a Type I (juvenile) diabetic, the amount of insulin needed to take care of that snack isn't all that much.

Compare that to a bowl of Oatmeal and the calories are about the same, and the number of carbs are the same (adjusting for the fiber content). The oatmeal, however, doesn't have the extra vitamins and minerals.

Fortified cereals, made with whole grains (as most are these days), aren't just "empty" calories and carbs. They're a great source of iron and can be part of any healthy diet. :thumbsup2

I am in the camp and so is my cardiologist that anything processed isn't good for you. Yes it has vitamins and minerals, and all calories aren't equal. If you like it fine, and with diabetes you know what you need, but as a general rule the stuff isn't that great for you. Just how much sugar is in that serving. I like what Jackie (whatever her name is) says. Anything over 4 grams of sugar doesn't really belong in your mouth. Now, I don't always follow that practice, but I am trying.

And sure a snack, no biggie, but some of the people here and I don't want to start anything, but some of the people here eating it for breakfast lunch and dinner, feeding it to their kids for dinner on several occasions, sorry but that just isn't right.

I'm from Chicago and I have never heard of this place, where is it?

It was somewhere near our hotel. I just looked it up and looks like it closed. Guess not everyone loves cereal as much as us. It says they have locations in DFW airport, Minnesota and Ohio now.

My cardiologist would (and has) said that its not the procesed food that is necessarily bad, it's the combination of processed food.

So if you have a bowl of cereal with milk and a piece of fruit for dinner she has always said that its not a bad choice. (I do that when I havent had the chance to go food shopping)

She hasn't told me to to forgo my soda that I drink about 4 times a week. When she asked me what I eat when I drink it I said, usually chicken, or turkey and veggies with some fruit as well. She said great...the soda is not going to kill you.

She goes with the idea (along with every other doctor I have ever had) that unless you have some pre-existing condition that really dictates specifically what you have to eat, having a soda, or candy bar or processed food as part of a well rounded diet (veggies, fruits, water, lean meats, etc) its nothing to be concerned about.

Having abowl of cereal with some fruit for dinner is much better than going through the drive thru....Having a "healthy" homemade dinner is not always possible 7 days a week.

egads! Why don't y'all just eat cookies for breakfast?!

If you get Cookie Crisp then it's not only cereal but Cookies too. Score!

Actually I figure my cereal is no worse than pancakes and syrup (which I detest), or any of the other myriad of syrup coverd carbs that count as breakfast, though I do enjoy the occasional eggo with peanut butter on it.
I actually tend to eat more steel cut oatmeal than cereal for actual breakfast but let's face it some mornings pouring out some cheerios and milk is really easy.

I enjoy cereal as a snack more than meals, but I have no problem feeding it to the boys for breakfast or as a bedtime snack or eating it myself for dinner. All things is moderation, and cereal is probably the least offensive of processed foods to give someone, at least it's fortified and you get a milk serving in the process.

I agree with the drive thru thing, but on a personal matter of taste note, I would rather starve. lol I realize this is only my opinion and lots of people do it, but the thought of cereal for dinner is more than I can handle, and I can honestly say that other than being a baby, in my 47 years of life, I have NEVER had cereal for dinner. Not to mention a bowl of cereal and 15 minutes later I am hungry.

Try "Bear Naked 100% pure & natural granola". It is healthy and absolutely delicious. We like to put Greek Style Yogurt on top and some fruit. My favorite flavor is banana nut.

I love cereal too! I love special k with strawberries, corn flakes and chex. I'll never forget- when I was a kid I got sick and threw up in front of my first grade class-I had pac man cereal for breakfast.(I don't think the cereal itself made me sick) To this day, I can not eat any cereal that is sugary or has those little marshmallows in it! lol! does anyone else remember pac man cereal?
