My best friend and I are going to MNSSHP for the very first time ever and we need some good ideas for costumes. Do you have any suggestions. We are "40 something" moms ( although, just between you and me.... Barb is the older of the two of us! )- and are looking for something that we will not die of the heat (flashes!! :p ) in! And you know what the best thing about it is? We don't have to worry about embarrassing the kids- because they won't be there! It's just me and Barbuka!!

SO- Do you have any ideas for us.... or anybody else for that matter? What are you going as?

I'm going to MNSSHP in my Princess Aurora gown, blue of course. No lie, its better than the Parks costume. A few years ago I had animators drooling over it. I usually get stopped by the Mickey Mafia at least once for either (a) signing autographs <like I was suppose to know I could only pose for pictures but not sign books when little kids give them to me> and (b) cast members asking me what I am doing in Frontierland, etc because the parade is starting and shouldn't I be in Fantasyland.

For Halloween itself I will be dressing as Kate to my DB's Doc Holliday in a copy of her first gown from Tombstone.

Taking Mom for her 60st birthday. It will be our first time to MNSSHP and we are looking forward to it. I told Mom this weekend that I was taking her and she is already busy trying to figure out what she will wear for the halloween parties (we are going to 2). As of right now, she will be dressed as Pocahontas....beige dress, necklace and indian sandles. Not sure what I will be dressed as.

Well it's not too Disneyish, but we're going as the Flintstones. I thought it would be good because we wouldn't be dressed too warmly for the weather and it wouldn't be too much to pack. My DD will be Pebbles and my DS has agreed to be Bamm Bamm. (He's only 8 and still not too worried about the "cool" factor!). My very thin husband will need to be fattened up!

DS and I are attending two parties, but we are only wearing costumes to the second one; which is DS's 12 birthday.:bounce:

He wants to dress as one of the twins from the Matrix.

It looks like a cool costume, but I'm sure the overcoat will be a bit much in Orlando. I'm thinking of just getting the headpiece.

I want to wear a 1950's outfit. Poodle skirt, sock, saddle shoes, scarf, glasses, the whole nine yards.

Peter Pan, the new version....
Our cast:
Me (34) Wendy
Brother (31) Captain Hook
SIL (31) Tiger Lily
Niece (2) Tinkerbelle
Nephew (3) Peter Pan

Some cast may be added later... still deciding on whether they are going or not.

Can't wait...

I went last year...and my 4 yo wore a hula skirt & lei, my 2 year old wor a kimono we bought in Epcot, and my 1 year old sone wore a kilt (he already had the red hair...LOL!) and they were It's a Small World dolls!!!

Have fun!

Well, I'm not too imaginative, so we're doin' the Wizard of Oz characters. We're from Kansas, so naturally . . . . . . . . . . .

I read a cute costume idea on another website, though, that sounded easy and cute: Dress as Oompa Loompas from Willie Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. White capri pants, dark brown shirts, an orange wig and some green face make-up!!

Hey Karen - Did you think I wouldn't see this??? What's with the crack about the age???

But someone had a good idea on here. Lets wear hula skirts and leis like the woman at the luau!!! Wouldn't we look gorgeous! All the men would be dying when they see us! Literally!! LOL!!!

Well, we are going with my best friend and her family. Our party consists of Dh , Myself, dd 5 , ds 2 and best friend, her ds 10,dd 6 , ds 4. I am trying to think of something for the kids to dress up as and us adults will proably just wear halloween themed t-shirts. Unless, We can come up for something for all of us.

We are vey excited and cannot wait.

A couple of friends of mine dressed as Willy Wonka and an Oompa Loompa last year. People LOVED them. :)

Barb- are you thinking about wearing those coconut shell tops?

Oompa loompas are a good possibilty! I was also thinking maybe the 3 blind mice. We could do that if Barb's sister Kathy comes with us. Otherwise.... hwat a some famous duos? Other then Batman and Robin that is!

Well, with three of you you could be the Power Puff Girls...or Charlie's Angels....or Flora, Fauna and Merriweather.

If there are two of you and one of you doesn't mind "being a boy" you could be raggedy ann and andy. Or one of you could be a raggedy ann doll and the other be a different type of doll, like a baby doll, or just two different types of toys. One could be Bo Peep and the other a sheep. Or Little Red Riding Hood and one a wolf. Of course those animal costumes could get a bit hot depending on how you did them. Angel and a devil?. A bee and a flower?

Of course there is Mickey and Minnie but I think you might get in trouble for that one.

My problem is that if I go with my son, he only wants to be Spiderman. What goes with Spiderman???? And don't say Wonder Woman because I just had a baby and certainly don't have the body for that!

A question for those planning semi-elaborate costumes:

Do you plan on riding some of the attractions too, or are you primarily focusing on the Halloween / costume aspect?

Halloween is my favorite holiday - I dressed up to take DS trick-or-treating, and now that we're empty-nesters, DW and I dress up to hand out candy. I've got several costumes, including my favorite, a devil outfit w/ horns, cape, pitchfork and 3-foot tail (and that's not boasting ;) )

My point is this: a fairly complex costume doesn't really lend itself to some attractions; the cape could catch, and I can't imagine what I'd do with a tail. I imagine that others would the same problem with princess gowns, faerie wings, hats/crowns/tiaras, etc. And as much as I love Halloween, I'd like to spend a fair amount of my MNSSHP hours on rides.

Thanks!

First of all, picture me at age 50 with naturally pure white hair. Got that? OK......Then you know I am already in character....

I made myself a Fairy Godmother costume a few years ago and have worn it a couple of times to MNSSHP. I was approached by several kids with autograph books, parents asked me to pose with kids (they knew the reality, but try to tell the kids that). One man was so nice, his daughter was crying because she wanted to come see me.......I had a great time joking with Cruella about her attitude and told everyone who commented on my costume to check out the pumpkin I turned into a coach in the back of the castle and told them I was looking for volunteers for horses....The CM that was escorting Merlin spotted me and he looked and said "She looks just like Lily" (must be their first name for the FG?)and we talked about Magic and how old we were and then he posed for a pic with me...It was a fun, fun night......

I even wore it during the afternoon snowglobe parade once. I was standing up and filming it and the walking characters would bow or stop and wave and then when the princess float came, Prince Charming spotted me, turned and tapped Cinderella (who was facing the other way) on the shoulder and she then turned and they both waved......and then one of the mice spotted me and got all excited and got the other one to turn and they both waved..... I have it all on tape. So cute.

And the woman next to me (who happened to be Deb Wills from WDWIG, what a nice surprise) her grand-daughter sat with me before the parade. She was just glued right on me. It was very charming. I got a real taste of how much kids believe, being on the other side of the costume. It's one thing to watch it, another thing entirely to be the object of the belief.

Man, who says Disney is for kids!!!!!

Anyway - back to your question - this year, my DGD8 will be Cinderella, DSD33 will be Snow White, DF10 will be Dopey and DGS5 might be Maleficent as a dragon, or Buzz, or Mickey. You know, it changes daily......

My advice is - play up your character - it really adds to the fun!

My friend & I went last year (we are 2 gals in our 30's) as a mouseketeer bowling team. We both worked at TDS (I still do, she works at DTD) back in 1999 when they put out these bowling shirts. They are off-while with black trim 7 collar, and have the MMC emblem on the front pocket, and say"mouseketeer" on the back. She wore jeans (gotts hide taht tatoo on her leg LOL) and I wore a poodle skirt. I picked up two round, black trick or treat bags really cheep at Target (they looked like bowling balls) & we were set! We got lots of compliments on the outfits, and a couple of people asked us where we got the shirts!

We are doing the MNSSHP again this Oct. 31, and I was thinking maybe pirate wenches, to tie in with the movie??

Adventurer Kat- how about a can of RAID to go with that Spiderman outfit?!?!? ;) Just kidding! But isn't there another character from that movie that is a scientist or something?

Kathleena- THANK YOU so much for the description of your Fairy Godmother adventures. I can hear the excitement in your post and it has me all excited ! How sweet that the little kiddles loved you!

We are planning on riding the rides too- and we will remember what you said about the elaborate nature of some cossstumes for those purposes! THANKS everyone!

Anyone have anymore ideas?

Two years ago I was Belle (I have a very talented boss who makes all my Halloween costumes), last year I was Lilo (grass skirt and all), and this year I am going to be Ursula (very simple costume made from a Prom Dress pattern but cut into strips at the bottom and stuffed with fluff). I can't wait for Halloween!

Last year at MNSSHP, DH, nephew and I were Star Wars characters (two Jedis and Amidala from Ep II), MIL was Cruelle (got a great reaction from the "real" one in the parade) and other nephew was Spiderman. It was a blast!

They do send you guidelines with your MNSSHP tickets and there are no rules against dressing as Disney characters. IIRC, they have things like your costume can't drag on the ground or have large, loose portions that could get caught in rides or trip up others. It also can't be gory and you can't wear a full face mask or anything that obscures your vision.

This year, we're staying home but DH's office goes all-out for Halloween. In past years, he's worn the Jedi costume I made, we've been Blossom and Professor Utonium from the Powerpuff Girls, and we've done the full out Scottish kilt (for him) and lass (for me). I usually make them myself from costume or modified patterns and it's great fun. I think this year we're going to do POTC costumes from the movie! :)

My DD11 and I are going as pirates...Costumes will be easy to put together and we can add or subtract layers as needed. Last year I was Cruella and my DD was a dalmation. I was dying in my 'fur' coat and my DD was way too warm in her costume made from a hooded sweatshirt and sweatpants.
