Let's say you test positive...

Hi,

I have a trip planned with family. Part of it are very anxious seniors. Got the travel insurance, not perfect but would most likely help a little bit. Everyone fully vaccinated and will get the booster as soon as available.

We are supposed to fly back from Orlando (to Montreal).

But what happens if we test positive? We have done some research online but found conflicting infos... We are confused and we wanna know what to do.

Do we need to quarantine? (I heard in Florida it was optional) How long? Are there official "quarantine hotels"? I can imagine we have to let the hotel know about our quarantine...

Any information you could offer us would be greatly appreciated.

P.s. we do not have drivers licenses so coming back home with a car is not an option.

As you read, quarantining in Florida is optional. So no there are no official hotels.

If you are flying, you need to wait 14 days after a positive test to be able to board a Canadian flight.

We booked a long-term stay hotel for after our trip in case we test positive. I can cancel up to the day before departure. So if we are all negative, we will fly home. If one of us tests positive, we'll hunker down in our rented 2-bed appt. My husband and I can work from our hotel for the two weeks of quarantine.

Ok, thank you so much for that. This info will most likely be a game changer. I doubt the seniors will want to risk staying 14 more days in Florida.

I’m going to purchase the quarantine insurance through manulife. That will cover our costs if we have to isolate.

I’ve booked a room at a residence inn that has 2 bedrooms and a kitchen. I can cancel by midnight the day we get our results. If we test positive we will go there and get some groceries delivered and stay there for 2 weeks.

My kids are bringing there laptops in case we have to quarantine, so they can keep up with school. I will just use a couple weeks of my banked vacation time.

Starting January 15, you can fly back to Canada 10 days (instead of 14) after a positive molecular test, assuming you don‘t have any symptoms.

I also just read that the US is changing isolation guidelines to 5 days? I find that shocking.

But I guess if one of us tests positive we isolate for 5 days. Then we could fly home at 10 days.

Considering we are testing 2 days before heading home it would add 8 days to our trip.

I believe we have to follow Canada rules, though.

Don’t we need to test negative in order to fly back home?

You can use proof of a past positive test to fly back. Canada is changing the days between you test positive and when you can get on a flight to Canada.

While in the US you can follow US rules.

So 10 days after the test? I wonder if we need to test again?

But I believe the Manulife language indicates coverage is not provided due to the level three non-essential travel advisory in place as of Dec 15 for Omicron. Am I understanding that correctly?

We were just at WDW and my daughter tested positive on xmas day. She is fine, with very few symptoms/sickness. Make sure to double-check your insurance and what it covers. We called before we went and were told "yes it covers covid" Then when she got it and we called they let us know it was only if you are hospitalized that you are covered, so if you are a "healthy" covid case you are not covered. So find out the fine print. There may be extra quarantine coverage that I was not aware of. Our other insurance through our west jet credit card said our insurance was void since Canad issued the "travel advisory" the day we left home. So they would not cover anything. Our hotel was great, we let them know we had a positive case, that allowed us to stay in the same room, and have deliveries right to our hotel room. 2/4 returned to canada today and 2 stayed in Florida for 14days or until she tests negative, whatever comes first

We are here now and due to come home on Dec 31 but……. one person has tested positive but not bad symptoms. I think that I am correct in saying that it’s a ten day wait till she can fly home. If they drove home or flew to Buffalo after getting a negative test (say in a matter of 3-4 days) how can they cross the Buffalo border into Canada and get picked up by a family member

So sorry this happened. Good at least your daughter feels ok.
Silly question....but if in your hotel, how do you test again? Does the hotel bring it to you? That can be expensive if you have to keep doing PCR tests again. Are you onsite or offsite?

I don’t know about Manulife but I know Croix-Bleue will offer coverage as long as it doesn’t get to Level 4.

Wow, I am so sorry you had to experience that. :(

I believe that Manulife (and other insurers) will not cover Covid issues (like quarantine during a trip if positive) if you book your trip during a travel advisory stating to avoid non-essential travel, which is the case right now.

They can't.
