From "Light the Lamp!": The monthly newsletter of the Holy Flame Pentecostal Church of Little Rock, Ark.

We welcome back to the area Senator Hillary Clinton (D., N.Y.), who has been spending so much time here in Little Rock lately that she's practically joined the church choir! "I'm here spending time at my husband's library," she told the Lamp when we caught up with her after a Sunday camp meeting, "and of course, I always take time to worship God in as evangelical a way as is feasible, given time and location constraints. As you know, I consider myself an evangelical Christian, really a Christian conservative, if you want to know the truth, so it's nice to be 'home' again in the South, which I really consider my quote-unquote home even though I live in New York most of the time. Well, Washington, D.C., most of the time, actually, but if I'm not there I'm in New York, of course, but always thinking about being here, in the South, my spiritual home, where I shared so many wonderful evangelical . . . moments and . . . events. Can you read that back to me?"

Oh, noooooooo, please. It will probably take a couple of years before I can even take any more!!!!

I'm too tired to even look it up on Snopes. :p

I think it's a tongue-in-cheek thing (though I'm not entirely sure....a good spoof is harder to spot you know...). Part of a "this week in church newsletters" piece.

WHEW!

I was a bit worried there . . .

Yeah, I know......Sometimes they are a bit too good at the satire that it makes you do a double (or triple) take. :D

I guess I don't get the joke, or the tongue in cheek thing.

Is it not possible for Hilary Clinton to be a Christian and a liberal at the same time? Or is being a Christian synonomous with being a conservative?

Not that I know or care what her religious background is, I just want to know at what point words like "Christian" and "patriotism" and "moral" became only identified with conservatives.

I think we could all agree that HC is one of the most liberal Senators in Congress.

To hear that she would call herself a "conservative" in any sense is a bit incredulous.

Hillary can certainly be a Christian and liberal at the same time, but being a Christian conservative and a liberal at the same time is a little tougher. I think that's where the tongue in cheek part comes in. ;)

Uhhh, o.k., so what is so funny about it? If its so unlikely that Hilary Clinton would describe herself as a conservative (and I agree there), where is the joke? The fact that its so unlikely? Or because its unlikely she would identify herself as a Christian?

To me, the satire is funny. And the satire is in Hillary spouting her Christian conservative bonafides in a red state a full four years before the next Presidential election.

Yes, Snoop, I'm wonder the same thing. You know, it's a bit OT, but I kind of see liberal values to be more Christian than conservative values. :confused3

And I don't know if its the media or who that is doing it, but this whole Christian Moral Red vs. Heathen Immoral Blue crap is wearing real thin. I so hope to see an end to that in the very near future, but I'm not banking on it.

I think it very much is the press. Even a closer look at those exit polls don't support it. Of course, the other way it's being reported is Red State - Neanderthal Religious Nuts, Blue States - Enlightened and Intelligent. Doesn't fly either way if you ask me.

We keep hearing from the conservatives that we all should come together again and be America again, yet I keep seeing these belligerent threads popping up. :confused3

Hillary Clinton has always been a very active Christian. I really
don't care if she's a Jew, Christian, Budhist, Muslim. Why do
you? You don't mean to infer that Christianity is some "elite"
group do you? I mean, come on...her religious upbringing and
regular church attendance along with her protection of her daughter when WJC was in office is well documented. You actually doubt that her religious outlook is conservative? What
brings you to that point of view? As a liberal(politcally) she espouses much more of a Christian leaning than many do here
on this board. Maybe it was her pursuit of health coverage for
children that turned you off? Do tell!?

Wait, I gotta get ready for this one.:drinking1
That was camomile tea for my stomach, I'm sure I'm going
to need it.

I think first you have to know the church that this letter came from. This is one of the biggest churches in the state of AR. I'm not talking just congregation I'm talking BIG BUCKS!!! I don't have problems with the tithing and all that but when you build a church that looks like a mini parthenon or something that could be in D.C. then you take whatever they are talking about with a bit of salt. They are very well known in AR for their conservatism and their criticism for anything they don't like or appreciate. I personally don't have a problem with them and think their church is nice from the interstate but when you start seeing their digital sign a few miles down the road and confuse it with a techno tran from a football field, it's a bit weird for a church.

No flames needed or wanted. Just trying to explain a bit about the church. I am orginally from AR.

Too true, Barb. And somehow it always comes back to the Clintons.
