Let Sleeping Dogs Lie in the Sand: Magic Southern Caribbean 9/20-9/27

Saturday, September 20, 2014

It’s cruise day! I woke up this morning to see the Magic docked across the bay at the Pan American pier!

The building in the foreground was the pier in front of the Sheraton OSJ where the Carnival ships were docked on Friday.

After taking pictures of the Magic I started packing everything back up and getting ready to go. I met with Debbie and Kayla and we walked over to Starbucks for breakfast. We ran into some folks that had just gotten off the Transatlantic (well, I noticed his shirt and started talking to him!) and they told us about how it took forever to get off the ship. While we were eating it started storming really really hard! It poured and the wind was really blowing. We just hung out and enjoyed our breakfast. After a bit the rain stopped and we walked down to CVS so Kayla could buy new sunglasses and find a Puerto Rico souvenir key chain. Shopping done we walked back to the hotel and grabbed our luggage to take downstairs. The lobby was a madhouse! Lots of Disney cruisers getting ready to go to the port. We were just checking our bags with bell services since we had an important place to visit before getting on the ship....Bacardi! Luggage stowed, we walked across the street to the pier and caught the ferry across the bay. The ferry costs $1 RT. We walked out of the ferry building and looked for a taxi. Some guy kept telling us to follow him to another building...it seemed shady but it was legit. All the taxis hung out in a parking garage a short walk from the ferry terminal. The taxi drivers waited to fill up a taxi and then dropped us off at Bacardi. I think we paid $4pp to Bacardi.

We checked in at Bacardi for the English tour. We were given a pager (like at a restaurant) and it soon went off. We got on a tram that took us past the offices and the distillery. The guide gave us some info on the buildings and the plants (sugar cane and coconut palm) planted outside.

We got off the tram and were led into the visitors center. We were only able to take pictures in the first room. The guide explained the significance of the bat on the label. The next room was a theater where they showed a movie about the history of Bacardi along with some vintage ads. The rest of center had recreations of the original distilling process along with documents and furniture from the history of the company. One of the more interesting rooms gave a you a chance to smell the rum during each stage of the distilling process. There was also a section where you could smell each flavor of rum. Some were yummy!

Finally we got to the final room where their bartender showed us how to mix a cube libre (rum and coke) and a mojito. He then gave us a taste of the 8 year old Bacardi. It was strong but delicious! After leaving, we got back on the tram where they let us off at the gift shop! I bought a bottle of the 8 year rum for my dogsitter and then we went out to get our 2 free drinks. I chose a cuba libre and a mix of a flavored rum and fruit juice. I can't remember what it was now but it was tasty. Both drinks were free and although small, the bartenders used a heavy hand!

While we were sitting and enjoying our drinks, Debbie got texts from her coworkers that were at the pier. This is the first time we heard of all the issues boarding the ship. They said that they had been standing in the hot building for almost 2 hours before they got on board. We were glad we were at Barcardi!

We grabbed a cab back to the ferry terminal and caught the ferry back to the pier. On the ferry, we decided to skip lunch and just head to the ship. We weren't that hungry and knew we had an early dinner. We picked our luggage up from the hotel and caught a cab to the pier at about 3pm. I think we paid about $21 for the 3 of us plus 4 suitcases plus carry-on bags.

There weren't many people at the pier. We quickly gave our luggage to the porters and headed inside and walked through the metal detectors and checked in at the counter. We saw the duty free store in the pier. We walked right on the ship. We came on the ship on Deck 4 and walked around the top of the atrium. It was rather odd. That's when I had a chance to experience the first of the changes to the Magic. The new chandeliers are not good. I really miss the Chiluly chandelier from before. It was odd not having the second staircase as well. Although it was strange, I was just happy to be on the ship!

Since the rooms were ready, I headed down to deck six to drop off my carry on and water. I got to the room and figured out I had already lost my KTTW card somewhere between getting on board and my cabin! My cabin host was right there and she let me in my cabin to drop my stuff and then I headed upstairs to get a new KTTW card before the safety drill Guest Services was able to get me a new card issued quickly. I headed back down and started getting a little unpacking done. I put my magnets and my FE up and got my water in the fridge before the drill. I was in a Cat 12 inside cabin on Deck 6 Forward. It was a great location very close to the Forward elevators which weren't ever busy. It was a quite a walk to the laundry room but not too bad.

For the first time ever, I found the directions very confusing for finding my muster station. I stopped and ask someone and was directed to the starboard side of the ship. I could find every muster station but mine. Finally someone told me I was on the wrong side of the ship. Argh! Glad it wasn't a real emergency. I made it to my correct muster station. I have to say the drill is so much more pleasant now you don't have to wear your life preservers. It started to rain while we were waiting but luckily it wasn't blowing in too badly. Once the drill was done I headed to go find a snack since we had skipped lunch. The line for chicken tenders was huge so I grabbed a couple of small pieces of pizza and a drink of the day...Bahama Mama! I scarfed the pizza down and took the drink back to my room. I was hoping that my bags would show up so I could get ready for dinner.

When I got back I had one of my 2 bags. I unpacked what I could and got cleaned up for dinner. I couldn't dress up since my bag with my nice clothes was still MIA. For the first time I was on Main dining since that is what my friends preferred. They are all east coasters so it made sense to them but it was a shock to me. After doing main once, I'm going back to late dining. It just works so much better for me!

Dinner was at Animator's Palate.

Debbies coworkers showed up and I got introduced to them. Let's just say we girls had a great time all week.

We were introduced to our great serving team, Rey from Phillipines and Mauricio from Mexico. We really enjoyed them all week.

I started off with the Black Truffle Pursettes. They are so yummy!

Baked Potato Soup

Marinated Angus Tenderloin. I subbed in the sour cream mashed potatoes instead of wasabi mashed potatoes.

Sorcerer Mickey came to visit!

I had the chocolate brownie cheesecake for dessert.

The food was good...It wasn't amazing but good. The serving team was really good and very personable. After dinner I headed back to my cabin to see if my last bag made it. On my way I saw Minnie in her fiesta outfit taking pictures in the atrium.

Back in my cabin I was happy to see my last bag. I unpacked the rest of my stuff and stored the bags under the bed. During the reimagining, all the beds were replaced with the same beds that are on the Dream and the Fantasy. There is plenty of room to store suitcases without having to lift the bed up now.

All aboard was at 9:30 pm. I believe that they ran a make up drill around 10. I went up to Deck 10 forward to watch the sailaway. There were tons of locals parking across the street from the pier to watch the ship leave. We finally cast off at about 10:30pm. It was cool to see and wave at all the people down on the dock. We slowly backed out to a wider spot in the bay where the captain swung the ship around so we could head out of the bay. We sailed right by El Morro which was lit up. I didn't have my camera and the Iphone takes terrible night pictures. It was beautiful! You'll just have to trust me.

After we got out to the open water I headed back to my cabin to get some sleep.

Next up, A Day at Sea!

So San Juan is like Vegas...you can walk around with cocktails. I LOVE IT! I even like the sound of the pina colada and the margarita mixed together. Dinner looks yummy.

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2: about the dead dogs.

It sounds like a great tour and I love the look of the water as you had your hand in it. Sounds amazing and breathtaking.

It was really amazing Kathy! The pictures just can't do it justice. Something you need to do once.

Jill, you're killing me with these updates tonight. :rotfl:

I would love to do that Bacardi tour.

And a Bahama Mama on the ship....yummy.

Love the theme of Animator's Palate...so very cute.

Your dinner looks really good...love potato soup, and I also would have chosen the same potatos.

Your room looks quite nice for just one person and spacious.

Sorry Kathy! :rotfl2:

DCL's cabins are very nice. I had the smallest one but still plenty of room for one or two people. I wouldn't put more than that in it but the sofa pulls out so you can sleep another person. I wished I could have gotten a balcony but I just didn't want to fork out the extra money this trip.

The broccoli cheese strata is delicious!

Ya know... I don't think I've ever gone to Starbucks for breakfast.

And I'm not all that sure why not???

(There doesn’t seem to be open carry laws in OSJ…anywhere I went, there was an option to get your drink to go in a plastic cup.)

Really? Interesting.

Pardon my goofy expression..the bartender was cracking me up!

Sure. The bartender. It has nothing to do with the pina coladas.
Gotcha.

Deb and I met back up at 3:30 and went down to pick up the rental car I had reserved. Car picked up we braved Puerto Rico traffic to drive to Fajardo for our BioBay tour.

Two questions.
How was driving in OSJ?
And how long a drive was it to Fajardo?

The instructions I copied down on the internet were very iffy….they included things like turn at the small, white church and turn left at the construction equipment.

 I can see why you were a little hesitant.
But it makes you wonder just how slow is that construction project that it's included in directions?

We did take a quick stop to eat dinner at Church’s which turned out to be a good choice!

That seems like an odd name for a fast food place.
Then again, maybe Church is a common name in OSJ?
Or it translates to something like "eats".

Puerto Rico has 3 of the best bio-luminescent bays in the world. These bays are home to plankton that thrive on a unique concentration of vitamins in the water and they glow.

Cool!

There are 2 ways to get to the bay…kayak or airboat. Not being super adventurous, we chose the boat.

And I would've kayaked.... and suffered for it.

I'm hoping someday I'll grow up and realize I'm all growed up now.

Check in took 3 seconds and then we had to kill an hour.

Hurry up and wait.
I wonder if they want you there an hour early assuming you'll get lost and be late.

We were sitting on a bench near the water and 2 dogs had settled there on the sand to sleep. One of the kayak groups lined up right there to get in the water and get in their kayaks. A group of women were in line making silly comments and one of them started telling the other not to pet the dead dog because they might get rabies. Deb and I just looked at each other. It was bizarre. I finally told them that the dog wasn’t dead, it was sleeping and had just been walking around 5 minutes ago. They finally left and I realized I had wasted a brilliant opportunity to mess with that girl further.  Of course, that would be evil and I never use my powers for evil! Plus I got a trip report title out of it!

How do you get rabies from a dead dog? :sad2:
I do so wish you'd used your powers for evil, just this once.
Ah well.
Good title, though.

When we were in Hawaii taking surfing lessons, Kay tired out first and hit the beach while Elle and I kept going.
She spent the time petting a dog that was laying on the beach. (belonged to one of the surfers)
I didn't worry about her getting rabies.

At 7:30 we headed back over to meet our company and we found out that the prop on the boat was broken so they were trying to get it fixed.

Oh, no! When did you start panicking?

We kept being told 20 more minutes.

I think that's the standard time to tell people.
Short enough to keep them from leaving, long enough to keep 'em off your back for a while.

While I was glad they tried to accommodate all of us, 12 people were too much especially when one family hogged all the attention.

Ugh. Too bad. Although judging from the pictures, looks like it was still a good tour?

The ones coming out were pretty tired since they had to fight the tide going in.

Yup. That would've been me.

We finally entered the bay and it was gorgeous. The real magic happened when you put a stick or your hand in the water and moved the water around. The effect was like pixie dust. You could see fish jumping out of the water and they would just glow from the plankton. It was amazing! Words and pictures really can’t do justice to what we saw.

So cool! Something I'll probably never see.
Thanks for sharing that.

Pardon the goofy expression. I was being blinded by the flash!

Of course. The flash. Not the pina coladas you had earlier.
Sure.
The flash.
Of course.

It’s cruise day! I woke up this morning to see the Magic docked across the bay at the Pan American pier!

What did that feel like?? :)

they told us about how it took forever to get off the ship.

The new chandeliers are not good. I really miss the Chiluly chandelier from before.

Not good how?
Not as nice? Or not as much light?

I got to the room and figured out I had already lost my KTTW card somewhere between getting on board and my cabin!

I'm sorry, but I find that funny.
Just got on board and already lost your card.

That room looks so tiny! Was it? Or is it just the picture?

Okay. But just this once.
Next time I'll require proof.
Or a signed afidavit.

Next up, A Day at Sea!

Thanks for the update! :goodvibes

Ya know... I don't think I've ever gone to Starbucks for breakfast.

I get my Iced Green Tea every day. I try to lay off the food most days.

It's an American chain. :)

Yeah, I thought it was funny too...I'm a dork!

It is small since I had the smallest category on the ship but it is much bigger than other cruise lines.

great trip report so far. I saw you went to Barrachina. Back in 2013 when I was on the Fantasy and it stopped in San Juan we went there and at the time lots of cruisers and crew from Disney ship were there, loved those drinks.

Also of topic from cruise, but I see your from Denver. I was just there for first time October 9th-12th. Nice city. My dad have been there before, but I had not. Was there for work convention

I'm back! Puerto Rico looks like a pretty cool place to visit. Never been there, but apparently I can get a National Park Passport stamp!:thumbsup2

Looks like a great start to the cruise.

Great update!!!

Maimi Vice? Delicious! Great way to start.

I hate random landmark directions. :scared:

Chuches Fried Cjicken and Sbux? I forget that Puerto Rico is part of the US. Love Sbux for breakfast.

Isn't the first glance of the ship just pure magic? pixiedust:

Bacardi Tour? Nice. Whats the significance of the bat?

I am guessing you lost your KTTW card due to the free pour drinks. ;)

PIZZA!!! Love DCL pizza.

I can't imagine Main dining. Late was amazing! Hopefully it'll work well for our Mexico cruise. 8 pm will feel like 9 normally but Joshua and I so enjoyed the empty ship during Main dining.

Yep, you can get a stamp! You can get one on St John too if you ever take a cruise there. :)

The original distillery in Cuba had fruit bats in the rafters so Senora Bacardi thought it would be a good logo.

I'll never do main dining again. It really threw my whole schedule off!

Ok, the football game is over (Go Chiefs!) and my chicken is roasting in the oven so I'm going to try to get another update done. If I wait too long, I'm going to forget all the details!

And you better try to get an additional one or two done BEFORE your Royals start on Tuesday. :goodvibes

Before I get started, I need to go back and mention that I went to the show the previous evening. Before the show started, the cruise director Natalie gave her announcements and then called up Miguel who made the announcements in Spanish. A good portion of the passengers were from Puerto Rico so I thought this was a nice touch...until Miguel rambled on 2-3x longer than Natalie talked. He was like a bad game show host...just over the top and fake. It got really old over the course of the week. Just my 2 cents and other may disagree but I didn't care for either Miguel or Natalie. I missed my Brent!

Sunday, September 21, 2014 Sea Day

For some strange reason, the only sea day was the first day even though we had a short distance to go. Oh well, I was off to relax!

I slept in a bit and then got up and headed to the DVC presentation. I was hoping to win the $200 OBC but it was not to be. There was a nice presentation and some prizes but I didn't win anything. There is no danger of me adding on through DVC since the point prices are now completely outrageous. If and when I add on, it will be through resale. I did get a free mimosa...free always taste better!

After the DVC presentation wrapped up, I headed over to the Castaway Club reception. The CC reception is open to all gold and platinum members and you recieve and invite in your cabin with the time and date. It was held in Fathoms. Waiters were bringing around hor d'oeuvres and mimosas and prosecco. I passed on both since I had a special event coming up. The ship's officers made rounds chatting with guests. After a bit, Captain Mickey came out for a photo op.

Shield your eyes from the nuclear white legs!

Normally the Captain comes out to talk a bit about the ship and the cruise line but he hadn't come out before I had to leave to go to brunch at Palo. I didn't see any rice crispy Mickey's on the way out but friends got them.

I headed up to Palo to meet my friends for brunch. Most of us sat down but one person was over chatting with one of her clients. The waiter didn't acknowledge us so we figured he was waiting for our missing person to finally sit. She finally came over and then we get ignore for awhile longer. Finally the waiter came over and got our drink orders and gave us the tour of the buffet tables.

I got my first plate of goodness otherwise known as protein and carbs.

All of a sudden the waiter brought over hot food for some people. I guess I'm used to having everyone being able to enjoy the buffet and then the waiter takes orders for the hot items. Oh well. I told the waiter I wanted a chicken parm. It never came so on one of his trips I finally clearly told him I wanted my own chicken parm.

It was really good. The risotto really makes it!

I finished up with a plate of desserts.

Some things were good and others I took a bite and passed on. The other people at my table were doing the same thing. The waiter kept telling us that it wasn't his fault, it was the chef's fault if we didn't like the food. He said this several times and quite frankly it was super annoying! He never offered coffee or tea (which I would have liked to have) or another drink. I have never had service this bad at Palo. When he brought the bills, we were all in a quandary on what to tip. I will say we left something but not as much as any of us would have given. Knowing that you tend to get the same waiter for later meals at Palo, I stopped and told the maitre d' that we were not happy with the service and we really wanted someone different for our dinner reservation later in the week. He was very apologetic and asked for feedback on the service. We filled him in and he assured us that he would see that it was corrected.

Brunch over, I headed back to my cabin to pass out some of my FE gifts. Our FB group decided to do an adult only exchange. I wasn't going to participte but this one sounded fun! I had a creative block and then when I came up with an idea one of the components wasn't available. I decided then to go with a Colorado themed gift and bought some candy bars from our local candy factory (Hammonds) here in Denver. I hope people enjoyed them! I passed out a couple of floors worth of gifts and then headed to my mixology class.

Our FB group put together a class and it was full before I found out about it. Someone put together a second class and I jumped on it. I sat down and ended up across from someone I consider Disboards Dining thread royalty. :) It was ehagarty and her husband. I had seen her earlier at Palo but wasn't anywhere where I could speak to her. I have read many of her reviews. In fact, she is the reason I decided to try Victoria and Alberts solo.

I apparently didn't take any pictures! Bad Dis'er! Our first drink was a mojito that we made ourselves. The bartenders came over and dispersed the rum...I guess they didn't trust us! :lmao: After the mojito, they brought around 3 other drinks. I can't remember what they all were but one was beer based...blech! The last was a B52 shot that was really good. We didn't get to do the normal mix behind the bar. They said there was another event on the other side of Keys. I think there was a wedding reception...I saw the bride walking down my hallway earlier. The class was fun and the drinks were strong...it's a great deal for $15!

After the class, I stayed and talked to Ellen for awhile. She is a lovely lady and it was nice to finally meet her in 3D!

I think I headed back to my cabin and then distributed the rest of my FE gifts. I had a little time left before dinner, so I did a load of laundry knowing the next several days would be busy. Laundry done, I headed to dinner at Carioca's.

Carioca's is the new dining room that used to be Parrot Cay. I like the new decor but it is LOUD. I wasn't super excited by the menu but ended up being pleasantly surprised. I started with an empanada.

Some sort of spicy tomato soup. It was ok but I wouldn't get it again.

They did have banana bread! I asked for some extra and our servers brought another entire basket! Two of our tablemates didn't show up so there was banana bread to go around!

I ordered what was listed as a ribeye but was really prime rib. It was tasty and HUGE!

For dessert I had the Coconut Tres Leches cake. It was really good!

It was a fun dinner and our servers were great! After dinner, I ducked in O'Gills to see if Cynthia was in there but instead ran into my missing tablemates. Apparently, they had 2 tastings that afternoon and decided just to stay in the bar. Let's just say they were happy! I drug one out to go the show but the other just wanted to stay.

We headed to see Twice Charmed which was great. It really is one of my favorites. After the show was over, I went back to my cabin and read for awhile before I headed to bed.

Next up..Antigua!

Jill in CO

Sounds like you are having fun!!!!

Sorry that the Palo brunch wait staff was not very attentive. :headache:

The Castaway Club and the tasting sound interesting. Glad those turned out to be good.

Monday, September 22 Antigua

When I woke up today, we were already docked in Antigua! I had ordered breakfast the night before and it came right at 7. I drank some tea and ate some cereal which wasn't great but I needed to eat something before I left. I had booked the Amazing Antigua tour through DCL and we had to meet at 8AM.

Once everyone was checked in, we were led down to Deck 1 to get off the ship and meet with the local tour guides. We were broken into smaller groups and got on smaller tour busses.

Tour description:

On this tour you will:

Board an air-conditioned minibus with an experienced, knowledgeable tour guide and ride approximately 30 minutes through Antiguas countryside—rich in daily West Indian life. Explore local villages and see old churches that exemplify West Indian culture. Travel past the magnificent view of Falmouth Harbour through to English Harbour and Nelson's Dockyard. Built in 1725, the Dockyard served as the base for the English naval squadron patrolling the West Indies.
Enter the historic park, the only working Georgian dockyard in the world, and meet a National Parks Guide, who will lead you on a short, informative walking tour through the Dockyard with its beautifully restored buildings, detailed plaques and many points of interest.
Enjoy a complimentary and refreshing rum or fruit punch followed by free time to explore the Dockyard, museum, art gallery, gift shop, and boutiques.
Conclude your approximate one-hour visit and continue by minibus to Dow's Hill Interpretation Centre at Shirley Heights, where you will view a fascinating 15-minute multimedia presentation that traces the island's history from prehistoric times to the present day.
Continue on up to the former signal station, Shirley Heights Lookout, for a picture-perfect view of Nelson's Dockyard and English Harbour.
Travel back through Antigua's picturesque villages en route back north to St John's.

We started the drive to the Dockyards and passed some old sugar mill ruins. Our driver didn't stop so I tried to grab a picture through the window.

We ended up at Shirley Heights where we saw some stunning views of the island and the ocean.

We could see down to Nelson's Dockyard.

After driving around a couple of other lookout points, we went down to Nelson's Dockyard where we had about an hour to look around and get our free drink.

This wheel was used to pull the mast down so the workers could scrape and repair the bottom of the ship.

Apparently there is a big sailing regatta every year here.

It was super hot and humid and it was taking a toll on me. I figured out that the all carb breakfast was not good. I passed on the free rum punch and was thankful I brought my water bottles along with me. After the hour, we loaded back up on the bus and headed back to the ship.

DCL had someone set up outside handing out ice cold washcloths. OMG, they felt so good! Brilliant move Disney! Back on board I grabbed some chicken tenders and fries. DCL has the best chicken fingers anywhere! After lunch, I crashed in my cabin for a bit until it was time for my spa appointment. I had originally scheduled my spa appointment on Sunday but it ended up being the same time as the mixology. I searched and searched for another appointment and finally found one that worked on Antigua day.

Way back when I started cruising in 2006 on the Wonder, I discovered the Alone Time spa treatment. You are taken to a spa suite with a private veranda with hot tub. You start by having a foot scrub and then you are given about 45 minutes in the hot tub. It was amazing. I could see the island and the water from the hot tub. What a great way to spend the afternoon! My therapist came back after setting up for my massage. She ld me back inside and gave me a 50 minute Thai poultice massage. It was heavenly! After the massage, she told me to go back outside to the chaise. She had tea and a plate of fruit (pineapple and strawberry skewers) and chocolate covered strawberries. Mmm! The pineapple was perfect...so good and refreshing. It started raining but it was still relaxing sitting there relaxing and watching the rain. After my time was up, my therapist came back with my bill. She suggested a couple of treatments that I might consider later in the week but didn't hard sell me on any products.

After leaving the spa, I floated back to my cabin. I chilled out for a bit before it was time to go to dinner. I'm pretty sure I ordered my Anchor's Away cheese platter and had a glass of wine while getting ready. Tonight's dinner was in Lumiere's.

I started out with the deep fried Brie.

Fried cheese...how could it be bad?

French onion soup. Yum!

Filet. Cooked perfectly.

I had ordered a bottle of wine the first night and it followed me to each meal. I never had to remind my server..he always brought it as soon as we sat down.

We ordered a portion of the lobster mac and cheese to try. It was ok but I was glad I didn't order it as my entree.

I ordered my favorite dessert the Grand Marnier Souffle.

Notice there are 2? Yeah, not your standard serving size but Luis heard that its my favorite and brought me two. :)

After I rolled out of the dining room, I headed to the theater to see Walt Disney The Dream Goes On show. The show was good but to me it was a bit of a "filler" show to fill time between the big production shows. After the show was over, I stopped by the shop and grabbed one of the Southern Caribbean t shirts. Nothing else spoke to me in the shops or the Navigator so I headed back to the cabin and read for a bit before turning in for the night.

Next up: St Lucia.

Regardless of over carbing in the morning, sounds like a great day. I have to remember that spa treatment, it sounds awesome! I love the two soufflés as well, and I pretty much roll out of there, but doing late dining, it's right to bed. You are so getting me psyched for my cruise! I can't wait.

I just hope we don't have the sucky Palo Brunch experience. What was up with that? Did your table mates order the entrees before everyone finished with the buffet part, or did he just start randomly bringing entrees? I want my own Chicken Parm every time! So good!
