Welcome to my trip report about my wonderful trip to Puerto Rico and the inagural Southern Caribbean cruise on the Disney Magic!

Introduction and Doggy Drama lead up to the trip

A little about myself. My name is Jill and I live in Denver, CO. I am the proud mommy of a furbaby named Bailey.

I work hard to support my travel habit. I really need to win the lottery!

I booked the cruise on opening day and I had been eagerly awaiting this itinerary for a long time. This was my first time to Puerto Rico and the first time to all the ports. My friend and TA, Debbie, and her daughter, Kayla as well as some of Debbie's co-workers, were also on the cruise and we planned to link our reservations together so we could dine together.

I began to start seriously planning the trip last May. WDW announced that F&W was starting earlier this year. I was really tempted to swing by Orlando since I have to change planes in Florida anyway. In the end, I decided to spend the extra time exploring San Juan. I am a DVC member and after a couple of heavy borrowing years, I decided to take a year off to save points and for the first time in years I didn't have an annual pass. In the end, I think I made the right decision.

I booked a room at the Sheraton Old San Juan. The Magic was originally supposed to sail from the dock right across the street but it was eventually moved to the Pan Am pier. I cashed in my Southwest Rapid Reward points and booked my free ticket to San Juan.

I didn't do much more planning until July. The summer is my busiest time at work so I basically tried to keep my head above water! I was chatting with one of my co-workers who really recommended a bio-luminescent bay tour. I looked into it and ended up booking a boat tour.

At the beginning of August, I took my dog to the groomers to get a bath and nail trim since my parents were coming to visit later in the week and I was leaving on a work trip the next week. As I was checking out, the groomer told me they had noticed a sore spot on Bailey's paw. I looked at it and thought it looked like an abscess. I had been dog sitting a puppy for a friend a couple of weeks before and thought it might be possible that they had gotten at each other when I wasn't watching. The vet I go to is open 7 days a week so I decided just to head over there to see if they could look at the sore. I was able to drop Bailey off at the vet and they called me later to say the spot was actually a tumor. Cue the panic. The vet took a needle aspiration and wrapped up Bailey's foot and told me to come back on Wednesday to get the bandage checked.

Fast forward to Wednesday. My parents arrived and we went to the vet. The vet told me that the tumor was a Mast tumor and that because of where the tumor was on her paw, they would actually have to amputate her toe. (for $900!) The vet wanted to schedule for the next Friday but I was going to be out of town so we scheduled for the next Monday. The night before the surgery, Bailey started flapping her ears and shaking her head. I dropped her off the next morning and told them about the ear flapping. Turns out she had gotten bitten by some sort of bug and was having an allergic reaction! They got the allergic reaction under control but then one of her liver tests came back really high. The vet decided that they wanted her to take antibiotics and supplements for 2 weeks. By that time it was the end of August. The vet was supposed to be on vacation so I couldn't schedule the surgery until then but I was worried about having the surgery so close to me leaving. I tried to postponed until I got home but the vet insisted on doing the surgery on Monday, 9/8. I was petrified that Bailey wouldn't be fully healed by the time I left but the vet assured me it would be fine. (Not!)

Bailey had the surgery and she was very lethargic for the first 3-4 days.

At her first bandage check on Thursday, the would was still raw. They had me come back on Tuesday, 9/16, the night before I left. I thought they would take the stitches out but the wound still hadn't healed enough. They finally agreed that she would be ok for the 10 days I would be gone and I could just bring her in when I got home to get the stitches out. I was already freaked out about the possibility of cancer and I really didn't want to inconvenience my friends that were dog sitting for me. Luckily, everything was fine while I was gone but I was still nervous!

I drove Bailey over to my friends house and dropped her off. They were very cool with me leaving her in her poor bandaged condition. :) Bailey was getting along well and they took super good care of her. I drove home and finished (over) packing. I finished up and headed to bed.

Day 1 coming right up!

Downer posts done...Let's get on with the trip!

Wednesday, Sept 17

Unlike most of my other trips, this morning’s later flight let me sleep in a bit…all the way to 7AM! I’m normally at work by then so this was a major accomplishment. I spent the next hour or so finishing up last minute packing and cleaning up around the house. My mom texted and I called her back and got the not great news about my grandma’s health. After chatting my mom I headed out to the airport with the obligatory stop at Starbucks. Fortified with my iced green tea, I made it to the airport, parked, and wrestled all my bags to Southwest’s check in counter. Due to a bunch of construction, everyone has to drop off on one side of the airport, and of course SW is on the other side. I had no lines and quickly dropped off my checked bags. Yay no checked bag fee! About that time I noticed that I had TSA PreCheck on my boarding pass and my day got even better! A quick trip through security and I was headed to the gate.

I had about an hour to kill so I checked email and charged my laptop. Soon it was time to board and we took off right on time. I played games and watched TV on my Ipad and it wasn’t long until we got to Orlando. (Note to self: Don’t watch TV shows about grilling and BBQ while you are stuck on a plane and starving!) In Orlando I grabbed some McDonald’s (blech!) and some Starbucks (Yum!) and plugged everything back in at the gate to charge. I ended up meeting a couple that were going on the same cruise and we chatted the entire time until boarding. Turns out we had over half the same excursions booked! Stalkers!!!

The flight to San Juan was on one of SW’s newest planes and it was barely half full. We were about 20 minutes late leaving due to some paperwork issues but got out of there as soon as that was done. I watched TV on my Ipad until we lost satellite reception (have to watch the AGT finale when I get home! NO spoilers please!!!!) and then switched over to Frozen. Soon we saw the lights of San Juan and landed right on time.

The San Juan airport was deserted at 10pm and the luggage was super quick. I ended up sharing a cab with the couple I met in Orlando since we were all staying at the Sheraton Old San Juan and Casino. I loved the cabs in San Juan. We were given a written price for everything before we left. The driver was a hoot and he gave us great advice on what to see and do here. After checking in and getting my key, I discovered my room had a view of the bay and the cruise ship piers. Nothing was there…yet! I went to bed to try to get some sleep ahead of the busy next few days.

Coming up. Old San Juan!

Signing on Jill. Not sure how well I'll be able to keep up, but I'll try.

I'm here, Jill. Thanks for the bat signal.

Great intro!

How is Bailey doing?

Stalkers! I can't wait to hear if you spend any time with them.

Here - Jumping on this one- hopefully I can keep up. :goodvibes

Hey Kathy! Bailey is doing well. I got the pathology report back when I got home and it showed the tumor was low grade so surgery was all that was needed!

I saw the stalkers around but not as much as I thought.

Yay! I'm here! I hope Bailey is feeling better by now. Looking forward to hearing about the rest. Glad you made it safely and met some friends.

I woke up early (6:30) this morning although my body is still on Mountain time the sun was shining in the window. I looked outside and didn’t see anything yet so I laid back down. I got back up after about an hour and saw that the Carnival Conquest had arrived in port.

Lots of buses and taxis lined up in the street but there was no noise. I laid back down again for a bit and the Carnival Breeze arrived and docked as well. I decided I had better get up and around so I changed clothes and put on some sunscreen and went to find the breakfast buffet. Normally I’m not a fan of the hotel breakfast buffet but it was included in my room rate so I figured I wasn’t going to lose anything by trying it. It was a standard offering of eggs, bacon, potatoes, cereal, fruit, and pastries/breads. I ate a little bit (the fresh mango was delicious) and then headed out to explore a little.

I walked outside the hotel and was hit with the heat and humidity. I live in Colorado now and we don’t have any humidity so I’m really not used to it anymore! (I used to live in Missouri but now I’m soft!) I walked down and found a CVS and did a little recon. They have a decent selection of wine, beer, and liquor so I may grab a bottle before I board the ship on Saturday. I grabbed a bottle of water and found a messenger bag that I can use since I left my nice Baggalini at home. (You would think that as much as I packed I wouldn’t have forgotten anything!) I also grabbed a couple of postcards to send to my niece and nephew. Purchases in hand, I headed back to the hotel to switch my purse out for the new bag. Switch made, I went to find the post office and Starbucks. No luck on the post office but did find the Starbucks. (Note: You can't use your Starbucks Gold card in Puerto Rico but if you show it, they will give you a 15% discount. One of my rewards expired because of this.) Drink in hand, I wandered down and found the Segway office for my tour.

When I decided to spend a couple of days in San Juan, I looked around on Trip Advisor for things to do in OSJ. The Segway tour was highly recommended so I booked it. There are 2 tours to choose from. A 45 minute tour and a 2 hour Fortifications tour. I went with the 2 hour tour and I’m glad I did. There were 5 other people there that were from the Carnival Breeze. We chatted for awhile and then Jose showed up and started teaching us to ride the Segways. I rode one at WDW several years ago and it took me a couple of minutes to get comfortable again but it wasn’t very hard. It took about a half an hour for everyone to get trained and comfortable. Jorge was our guide and he took us along the city walls and eventually out to El Morro. He gave us a lot of history of San Juan all the way back to when Christopher Columbus discovered Puerto Rico in 1493. The battlements and architecture were impressive and Jorge made sure to explain to use how and why things were built the way they were. We rode the Segways over cobblestones and through the streets all the way to the Fort and then back to the pier. We didn’t get back until 12:30 so we got the full 2 hours of touring even though we spend 30 minutes on training.

OSJ is still mostly surrounded by the orignal wall.

Tarpin waiting for the fisherman to throw out the fish scraps.

Bacardi Distillery across the bay.

Governor's Mansion. The oldest continuously occupied government residence in the Western Hemisphere.

El Morro

My attempt at an artistic shot.

Proof I was there!

I was having so much fun!

After paying for the tour (yes, they trust you to pay at the end!) I headed out to find some authentic Puerto Rican food for lunch. Jorge recommended a place called Raicies. I walked over and found it. There was about a 15 minute wait but they told me I could eat at the bar. The bartender asked me the silliest question when I ordered my first pina colada of the trip…with or without rum. Duh! The PC was cold and delicious.

I ordered the strip steak mofungo. It was ok. The meat was cooked more than I wanted and the plaintains were just eh. I can say I’ve tried it.

Sitting there I think this was more of a touristy place so maybe I can find a more authentic place to try it again. After finishing lunch, I grabbed another refreshing iced green tea at Starbucks. (Yes, I am a addict, now back off! ;)) I noticed that the Breeze was already gone (they left at 2) I walked back to the hotel and finally found the post office! Two postcard stamps later, I mailed the postcards and came back to the room to cool off again before my next adventure.

Continued in the next post.

Continued from previous post.

I hung in the blissfully air conditioned room and caught up on some email and uploaded pictures to Photobucket and starting writing up the trip report. The Conquest left at about 3:40 or so. I headed out around 4 to meet up for the Flavors of San Juan food tour. The tour visited 6 different places and we tried a variety of Puerto Rican dishes from fritters to mofungo to the best flan I’ve ever eaten. The tour was fun and very educational.

Trio of fritters

Home of original Pina Colada! They were delicious!

Flan at the last stop (It was a cross between Mexican flan and cheesecake) It was delicious!

I would highly recommend this tour. It was a full 3 hours and we got a lot of history of Puerto Rico and Old San Juan. We didn't end up overly stuffed but I was full.

At about 7:30 or so I headed back to the hotel to cool off and get off my feet. My friend Deb texted me to say she was here so I met up with her in the lobby and we caught up a bit before calling it a night.

Checking in late.

Great start! I'm looking forward to reading this TR. :thumbsup2

YUMMMMMMMM!

Hey Jill - thanks for the heads up! You are off to a great start!

First - poor Bailey. How stressful. I hope your fur baby is making a full recovery. She's (is she a she - I'm not sure lol) is adorable! :good vibes

Yay for having enough SWA points to book a free flight. I am not quite there yet. Almost. It's taking me forever to get a free Orlando flight. I didn't know they flew to San Juan. Noted!

Score on the great hotel view. How fun that you could see the other cruise ships.

Great choice on the segway tour. Now I want to book one since its been so long since I've done one. Looks like it was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed all your scenery pics.

Looking forward to more!

Excuse me, has this seat been taken?
Just letting you know I'm here, will comment later.

I'm in! Thanks for the heads-up. I'll come back later to comment when I have time.

Great start to your trip report! Seems like you had a good start with a nice day exploring San Juan. Just out of curiosity: Do you get different stamps in Puerto Rico or could you have used US stamps??
