Lesson learned

I just called Disney to cancel a trip this fall that I had booked online with free dining and learned I would lose my $200 deposit because the insurance was nonrefundable. I had not realized I HAD insurance. I never buy insurance! This would have been my 9th trip and I have often changed, cancelled, rebooked trips in the past without this happening. But what happened was that when I booked this trip I didn't notice that the insurance was checked. I had not deliberately chosen insurance and had I noticed I would have taken it off as I do not buy it. It had been preselected just like the tickets were preselected - which I had taken off as I have an AP and so just selected one day base tickets..... LESSON LEARNED! Disney had a clause that if you cancel a trip more than 14 days after you booked it and you had chosen insurance that you lose the cost of the insurance. Well I didn't choose - I just didn't see it - and I didn't read the fine print. Ooops $200 down the drain.:mad::mad:

That happened to me last year--I called only a couple days past the "14 day" deadline though. I explained that I misunderstood the deposit refund being reduced by the amount of the insurance--which was 100% true--and Disney gladly gave me back my full $200 deposit, with a polite (and friendly) reminder that you will always lose the insurance portion of your deposit if you don't cancel within 14 days of your reservation on a package. Might be worth the phone call since it seems like an innocent mistake.

Just to clarify you don't loose your entire deposit just the cost of the trip insurance. Mine is just over $60 so if I cancel after the 14 days but before the 45 I loose the $60 not the entire deposit of $200.

OP you should still get a good portion of your deposit back.

This happened to me. I did not want insurance but when I made changes to our reservation I found that it had been added on to the original reservation. I spoke to guest services and they corrected the problem. I did not see that it was included on the confirmation so I could have been held accountable but fortunately the amount was credited.

I am curious how you could not notice a $200 increase in the price of the trip :confused3

But then again I am not surprised since most people "can't be bothered" to read what they are agreeing to when the click the order button on a website. Personally I noticed and read the information in the clearly marked section about trip insurance and removed it from my online order.

Unless you have 3 adults in your party you should get back at least something. Children under 18 are covered by their parents trip insurance. So for 2 adults its like $133 .Disney likes to slip that in on pkgs.It does the same thing online if you are not careful. You also lose that money if you make ANY date changes to your ressie once the 14 days have passed.Even if you are rescheduling another trip the insurance does not carry over and needs to be repurchased. But to be safe next time just make sure no insurance is included on it.Costly lesson learned.

I absolutely see how this could have been missed; especially if you had booked multiple trips before and it hadn't been a default setting. OP, thanks for the info. I'm sure you looked through your order carefully; sometimes people feel the need to jump to erroneous conclusions.

I booked via phone and did not even KNOW they added the insurance in. I got the email confirmation and then realized that INS was added. I called and they took it off.

I was told that if I chose to BUY the insurance it can be added up until the final payment. SO I guess, if ANYONE wants ins on a package you should wait till you make your final payment so if there IS a cancel, you'd atleast NOT lose the $$????
I hope this works out for you OP, perhaps another phone call would work??? The economy what it is, perhaps they will be more understanding, though I know they don't have to be......
Good Luck!!!!:wizard:

If you guys say so...but look how big that block of text is and see how it clearly has an extra line in the summary for insurance. You have to scroll past all that to click the "book now" button.

Well if you ask.......I do not book online, I book over the phone. I went over all of the costs and then put my deposit down. When I did this my totals were the amounts that I had written down. I glanced at the confirmation I received in the mail and really was just making sure that the dates and the package was correct. I have admitted my responsibility in the discrepancy but must add that i was clear when I placed the booking that I did not want insurance. I told guest services the same thing.....I should have read it all closely when I got the confirmation. With that said......no one should add a product onto an order without permission., not even a Disney CM.

I always buy insurance and that is exactly what I do. I wait till right before the final payment is due and then add it to my pkg.It can not be added after final payment has been made, as many people who have already paid and are now trying to add it (thanks to FLU.) have found out.

It's one thing to slip something in or try to.

It's another thing to refuse to take it out and refund accordingly when it is called to your attention.

Make another, casual, request for a refund saying you did not select that item and didn't notice it was preselected.
