I needed 3 extra points to extend my vacation by one day, so I borrowed it from my next use year. Now I have to pay an extra $80 to get trip insurance because my trip spans 2 use years worth of points. Bummer. I know i would have probably payed for the insurance next year anyway, but it would have been less expensive just to purchase the extra points and kept it with only one use year. silly to worry about it I know, like I said-Lesson learned.

I don't know the answer to this, but I wonder if you could just have insurance for the current UY points and not get them for next year's 3 borrowed points. After all, you would only be losing 3 points. I don't know if that would be allowed.

As you said, you would probably buy the insurance anyway, so you are covered.

Do you have to have trip insurance to borrow points?

Did you consider buying the "one time use" points for $15 each? That would have only run $45 and would have avoided borrowing.

:) Just to add...one time points can only be used for a 7 month reservation. I didn't think insurance covered points.

I would now, but I didn't understand how it worked until I had already borrowed the points. I did talk to member services about it, they said it is all or nothing. I cannot pay for insurance for part of the trip, have to pay both years or I can't have my trip covered at all.

I don't understand. Why did you have to buy trip insurance?

I assume she *wanted* to buy trip insurance, in case there's a cancellation and she won't be able to use those points before they expire. (I believe it gives you the dues back if you have to cancel)

And when you buy trip insurance, you have to get it for all the points. So she didn't have to buy the insurance, but once that decision was made she had to buy it for the whole group of points. Since you pay the premium per use year you are using for the trip, she had to do it for two UYs.

Oh ok. I see. I was gonna say, I've booked plenty of trips that have 2 UY worth of points in them and have never had to buy insurance. LOL Thanks for explaining.

I have never bought trip insurance, but I did inquire about it last trip which used two UY points. I am sure I was told that I could pick if I wanted to insure both UYs or just one. I could be wrong or things could have changed.

If I were you, I would call back for clarification.
