Lent - Whatcha giving up?

What exactly is "Lent?"

Lent is the Christian season of preparation before Easter. In Western Christianity, Ash Wednesday marks the first day, or the start of the season of Lent, which begins 40 days prior to Easter (Sundays are not included in the count).

Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. The purpose is to set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ - his suffering and his sacrifice, his life, death, burial and resurrection.

Not all Christian churches observe Lent. Lent is mostly observed by the Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian and Anglican denominations, and also by Roman Catholics. Eastern Orthodox churches observe Lent or Great Lent, during the 6 weeks or 40 days preceding Palm Sunday with fasting continuing during the Holy Week of Easter.

Lent for Eastern Orthodox churches begins on Monday and Ash Wednesday is not observed.

I am giving up all drinks but water and milk (in my cereal)..this should be really hard since I am a BIG ice tea drinker..I have my first glass at 7AM LOL.

I'm giving up my Diet Coke for Lent. I can't give up caffeine this time because I still need coffee for my morning college class. Going back to college has definately put a damper on last years choice.

Oh well, Diet Coke is my addiction really so I'll be giving up something HUGE.

I am giving up Church for Lent!

Tried telling our priest that this morning...he was not amused. I'm the altar guild directress for our church as well as part of the small choir, and I sit on the governing board of the church!!! But, at this time of year, I start to get really burned out at chruch.
Still considering what would be meaningful....alcohol would be meaningful, but can I do it???!!! Oh, those mother's nights out would be so tough!!!! I think chocolate would actually be easier than giving up my GreyGoose or a good merlot!!!

i am giving up eating between meals and i have to excersize at least 15 min. a day...... how many of you can have or do what ever you give up on sun.?? thats what i grew up with ...... like if i gave up ice cream i could only have it on sun. not sure if thats true or not but thats what i was taught.... vicki
