This weekend I am upgrading from my Nikon p80 to a Nikon D3100!!! I am wanting to buy it as a kit and I have the option of the 55-200 lens or the 55-300 lens. At the store I played with the 55-200 and never thought to play with the 55-300 until now as I'm going over the prices.

My main focus on picture taking is of our family with the kids, sports and vacations. I was thinking of the 300 lens in case I am afar I still can get some good close ups or would the 200 work just the same?

Thanks!!

If you are interested in taking pictures of anything that will be moving quickly such as your kids or outdoor sports, I'd probably upgrade to the Nikon 70-300mm VR if you can, since the 55-300 gets consistent reviews of being slow focusing.

That being said, the 200mm end of a Nikon 55-200mm VR will get you good close-ups of the kids and it's less expensive than both the 55-33 and the 70-300.

If it were me, I'd get (in order):

Nikon 70-300VR
Nikon 50-200VR
Nikon 50-300VR
