We are looking to get my son Rec Specs for basketball. I was going to go to Lens Crafters, but then someone suggested America's Best Glasses and Contacts. I had never really heard of them before, so not sure of their reputation. Then someone else mentioned that a Just 4 Eyes opened up near me. Can anyone compare these three places? Also, we don't have his actual prescription on hand. I know that Lens Crafters can determine his prescription by looking at his curent lenses. Can the other places do this, or will they require a new eye exam?

Also, we don't have his actual prescription on hand.

You will need a prescription to order new glasses, not just a current pair of glasses.

Lenscrafters is outrageously expensive. I have not been to the other places you mentioned.

If there is a Costco near you, you might want to try them. They have a good choice of glasses at very reasonable prices and they are excellent quality.

My DH got an eye exam and glasses at America's Best - they were PACKED the day we were there and we felt a bit like cattle, but he hasn't had any trouble with the glasses and we paid $70 for 2 pairs (and got the eye exam "free" since we bought the deal). I don't know how much their "specialty" glasses are though - like rec specs and sunglasses.

As for a prescription - they're only valid for a year from the date written, so you'll have to get a copy of one from his doctor (if it's been less than a year) or maybe the eyeglass place can call either the doctor or the store where he got his eyeglasses to get the information. When I thought DD lost her glasses, Wal-Mart Vision Center was going to call the store where I bought them originally to get the information, but I don't know if they do that in all states.

My husband and son have been going to America's Best for glasses and eye exams for several years. They don't have the best choice of frames but my husband doesn't care because they're inexpensive and my son doesn't care because he almost always wears contacts. He buys his contacts from VisionDirect, though because they cost less there.

I buy my glasses at WalMart and I love them, but they cost much more than America's Best.
