So this will be our 1st ever trip to WDW. My daughter will be 5 and the baby will be about 7 months. How long do you think we need to stay for the 5 yr old to take in all that her age needs to do/see? DH has work and does not want to take too much time off, so he is suggesting leaving early Friday and returning early Tuesday.

So, is 4 full days enough?

TIA

To be honest....you'll only scratch the surface with 4 days.
Now....if this will be a "one and only " visit with no other trips planned in the future, you would need about 10 days (in my poinion). If you intend to go again (and I guarantee ..you will!!:thumbsup2 ),then a shorter stay might be OK.
We are going in August for our 15th trip....and we still manage to find new stuff to do (as well as visit the old favourites)

It depends how many parks you want to see, and how leisurely you want to be. I like to pack in rest days between park days.

On our first trip when my youngest Dd was one, we did 3 days at Disney and one day at Seaworld, but our vacation was a full week so we had lots of down time. We chose to do Magic Kingdom twice and MGM once for the preschool stuff. This was also in off-season where there weren't any lines and the parks weren't that crowded.

The second trip, the girls were 3 and 5, and we added in the other 2 parks. It ended up that they loved EPCOT so we did that twice, Magic Kingdom twice, and a day each for MGM and AK. Total length of trip was 10 days. (But, they were getting tall enough to go on the thrill rides so there was more for them to do.)

I would plan for a week vacation, (weekends are busiest ... could he do Wednesday to Monday?) with your 4 days at the parks of your choice. Add in down time by the pool or sand, and a character meal on a non-park day. Remember at that age, the kids are super-excited just to be staying at a hotel and riding the monorail :)

Plus, if you're travelling on any of those days, it basically wipes the kids (and parents) out for the day. We arrived at the Orlando airport at 11 am yesterday for our afternoon flight, and walked through our doors at 7 pm last night ... and we live in the GTA!

We do 9 days to 2 weeks and still don't get everything done. We have learned to RELAX and enjoy our vacations knowing that I can sell blood and sperm for the next trip [just kidding]. S

4 days is not enough for a first time trip. Consider that Fri/Tues would be travel days, so you only have 3 full days. If you plan on doing 2-3 parks you might see alot but need to prioritize what you want to see. It will also depend what time of year you go, less busy times you will definetly see more. Weekends are also alot busier. Plus if you are doing character dining(which really is cool first time around) that will take a big chunk of time if you are not eating at restaurants that you will be in that day. Thus alot of advance planning is needed. What type of things will your 5 yr old like? MK will defintely be a full day, but if you need to go and rest with the baby that means afternoon breaks. My first(and what i thought would be only trip for along time to Disney -as Prev Poster stated :goodvibes ) turned into a 3rd in 2 yrs. We did 5 days first time but had 3 full days and 2 half days. We really only scratched the surface but did get to see alot of things that the kids wanted to do. We missed out on alot of the shows etc but did that 2nd trip. You may need to decide on 1 park to skip.

Just went on our first with 3 kids, 7, 5 and 3...we were there for 8 nights and had 6 days at the park.

Everyone is different, but I don't think your 5 days with the travel etc. is anywhere near enough. We certainly could have stayed for 5 more days and taken a tonne more relaxation and downtime but didn't.

Can you look at going during Free Dining to save some $ and extend the stay?

Go over a (Canadian only) holiday to reduce the vacation time by a day. Thankgiving comes to mind as a good time (October) to go to Disney. Victoria day falls on a different weekend from Memorial Day often (always?) as well

Try to find a way to get more days at the park...it's worth it as well as ticket prices are pretty minimally increased as you add on days. You are really only paying for hotel and meals with each additional day.

I worked hard to limit our vacation days as well and I regret that now. Won't be an issue next time!!

... another vote for not enough days ... especially with a 7 month old along. There's feedings, naps, diaper changes etc. to consider - these all take up time ... especially if you are planning on heading back to the hotel for naps midday. Plus, you don't want to wear your 5 year old out either!

(We went for our 6th time this past December - first trip with DNephew who was almost 6 months old at the time. We had a great, relaxing trip - mostly because the baby forced us to slow down and take it easy. We didn't ride nearly as many things as usual - and we're not big on the thrill rides. We would have missed out on a LOT had it been our first time.)

For your kids ages, 1 - 2 days at MK, 1-2 days at EP, 1 day at DHS, and 1 at day AK is realistic to see and do lots without running a marathon each day. An extra down day somewhere in the middle would be a good idea if you could swing it.

4 days not enough. our first time we went for 5 days 4 nights and that was not enough. we go back in october for 9 days...

I think it all depends on if you're planning on going back. You can do A LOT in that amount of time; the thing is that you won't be enjoying yourself. We've been down 8? times since 2000, and as a previous poster mentioned, we too find new things to do!

My advice is plan ahead to make sure you get to see the major attractions that interest you and go from there. A co-worker just came back and tried to do everything in 4? days and she's saying she now needs a vacation from her vacation because it was so tiring running around trying to shove everything in.

That would only give you 3 full days, and I wouldn't be surprised if you kicked yourself for not going on a longer trip. In my opinion, you need 6 days minimum (devoting two full days each to Magic Kingdom and Epcot). With a 5-yr-old and 7-mth-old, I'd expect that you'd need a fair bit of downtime as well. Does your husband not want a longer trip because he can't miss more work than that, or does he not expect to enjoy the trip?

He can't miss work. I'm working on changing his mind though

Please excuse me if I'm being too nosey or personal.....but, does your husband not get any annual vacation (I mean a proper vacation like 2 weeks of at the same time) ?
Also, I am not clear from your original post, are you driving down:confused3
or flying ? (obviously driving would be a waste of time for the duration you are talking about). Aas a previous poster mentioned,if you can perhaps line it up with a long weekend, you would at least get the benefit of the extra day.

All of the other posters have given good advice - you will see very little considering your actual full days are only Saturday, Sunday and Monday with a planned Friday to Tuesday trip. Travel days wipe everyone out - that's just a given.

The suggestion to use a long weekend holiday is really your best option - but that will require your husband booking the rest of that week off - in other words, he needs to be prepared to miss 4 weekday workdays (assuming his job is Monday to Friday - if he works weekends at all, you would have to adjust for that).

The next couple of holiday weekends where the parks will be slower are Labour Day and Canadian Thanksgiving. This has the benefit of lower crowds and lowest costs - it's value season at WDW during those times. The Labour Day weekend has the added advantage of the current Free Dining promotion - but the added drawback of intense Florida heat and the fact that it is hurricane season. A hurricane isn't really a problem for WDW itself since it is far enough inland that only a really big one heading right for the state becomes problematic, but a hurricane in the area could possibly disrupt flights for a day. Candadain Thanksgiving avoids the heat and hurricanes for the most part, but the discounts for that time won't be quite as good as Free Dining - there should be some discounts available though.

If you can go over one of those holiday weekends, Labour Day itself will be busier at WDW than the Canadian Thanksgiving Monday - so that is another factor to consider.

To maximize your time, you would want to leave on the Saturday before the holiday weekend and return the following Sunday - this gives you 7 full days at WDW. However, airfare on Saturday will be more expensive - the Sunday flight should be a little cheaper.

Next, Sundays at WDW are one of the busiest days in the parks - especially the Magic Kingdom - that would be your first full day there, so you might want to start with a different park even if the kids are itching to get to the MK.

Even with 7 full days, I would suggest (considering the age of the kids) no more than 5 park days - or perhaps 6 park days if one of them is at one of the water parks where they can play in the kiddie areas. Otherwise, take two full days off to recuperate. This is especially vital if you went during the Labour Day period - the heat will wipe all of you out. Trust me on this.

I would also suggest staying ON SITE! Get an early start to your day and try to get to the parks at opening time - especially during the Labour Day week. This will avoid the crowds and the worst of the heat in the afternoon. Do the parks until around lunch time - perhaps grab food in an air-conditioned restaurant before leaving to go back to your onsite resort for an afternoon rest - YOU'LL NEED IT!!! IF - and I mean IF - you feel rested enough after that, you can go back to the parks around dinner time (lines will ease off again - and so will the heat) and stay for a couple of hours before heading back for the kids' bedtimes.

On your (at least one) break day, do nothing other than enjoy your resort - swim in the pool(s) - the kids will be happy with this in and of itself - and perhaps pick a break day to take in a character dining experience at one of the resorts. Make it a VERY relaxed day - you'll be glad you did.

Finally, remember that the 5 year old - depending on their height - will be able to go on a lot of rides that the 7 month old cannot - even something like Goofy's Barnstormer as a very minor roller-coaster is out for the youngest. This means that as parents, you will be sacrificing what you might want to see to ensure that the children are having fun - and if both of you want to ride something the 5 year old can ride, but not the 7 month old - it will take extra time because you will need to ride twice (read up on the "baby-swap" in any Disney guide to find out how to do that in the shortest amount of time possible).

Anyway, 5 days in the parks is really about the minimum to do Disney well for a first trip - this gives you the chance to go at least once to each of the 4 main parks, and likely a second trip to the Magic Kingdom, since this is likely the one your 5 year old will want to see twice - although that's just a guess based on my own kids, who where 6 and 2 on their first trip.

With seven full days, I would suggest two park days, an off day, two more park days, your second off day, and a final park day before leaving. You'll get to see quite a lot - but obviously not everything - that's why you'll go back again someday! You also won't burn yourselves out - if you try to see all four parks in only three or four full days, you'll need a vacation AFTER getting back home.

Good luck, and I hope you have a great time!

4 days might be enough to wet his appetite.

My DH had only ever travelled once with his family growing up. The rest of the time they camped but only when they were young. He did not travelling as a teen. Me on the other hand had travelled through the States and Europe.

One day he came home from work and said what's new. I said, ready for it....I booked a WDW vacation you need these days off work. He was MAD but took the days off. I told him I would happily take the kids alone...lol. We went for 4 full days between Christmas and New Years so not enough time. The good thing was that he enjoyed the vacation so much that the next time I said I wanted to go he said book it and tell me when I need the time off. I booked 7 nights 2 years in a row and am currently planning a surprise trip so the kiddies.

So to answer your question....4 days is not enough time but it may be just the beginning

Just wanted to add that 3 days probably isn't enough.

Also wanted to say that our Thanksgiving is usually the same day as their Columbus Day holiday -- we were there a couple of times and the parks were packed (we didn't realize they had a holiday then).

Ooops - good point - forgot about that.

Still, a holiday Monday is going to be your best shot at allowing your husband to take only 4 days off. Just make sure you have researched how to avoid crowds - still, in either September or October this can usually be done by sticking to my previous advice - get there early, leave in the afternoon, and possibly go back around the dinner hour.

I would say at least 10 days. Our 7 days trip from last March wasn't enough and we booked our 2nd trip for 2 weeks once we got home.

If three full days and two travel days is all you have, I would do this:

Day One: Arrive and REST by the pool [stay ON SITE!]
Day Two: Have a late character meal....I would suggest Chef Mickey in the CR for your kids ages. And then spend the rest of the day enjoying DTD and your resort.
Day Three: ALL DAY AT MK!
Day Four: Visit a couple of Disney resorts and maybe one more character meal.
Day Five: Travel home

You'll only do ONE park day, but you will experience LOTS of Disney magic while staying ON SITE. The character meals will give you TONS of Disney magic and your baby is free!

Blessings, Sandra

DH has work and does not want to take too much time off, so he is suggesting leaving early Friday and returning early Tuesday.

So, is 4 full days enough?

TIA

OMIGOD, NO!!!! We tried to do a whirlwind trip in February 04 and all we did was run so try to see what we had pegged off as "must sees". We missed out on waaaaaaay too much. Running all the time was not pleasurable for a vacation.

If you are first timer, let me begin by saying that Walt Disney World is NOT Canada's Wonderland. Every first timer has that misconception. ;)

It's not the same game, it's not in the same league - in fact - it's not even the same sport!!!

4 days is not enough to see and do it all (mind you, neither is 14). The more times you've been to Disney, the easier it is to take short trips. For a first time visit, I'd recommend no shorter than a 7 night visit. :)

Have fun!!!
