My son's 7th birthday is in April. I'm making Lego themed birthday invitations and notebook covers (front & back) for the kids.

I already designed the notebook (front & back) covers, but then had a thought. Would someone be able to change the wording "LEGO" to "Andrew" (or even "Andy" if Andrew is too large) in this picture?

I tried using Digital Scrapbok Artist and PSE 9 and cannot seem to figure out how to do this...

How's this?

Just wonderful, thank you!! :woohoo:

Do you use Photoshop Elements by chance? May I ask how you did it?

I use Photoshop CS4 but didn't do anything that could not be done in PSE. Here's the basic steps I used.

1. Used the polygonal lasso tool to surround the existing letters and filled that area with the red.

2. Typed "Andy" in the box then used the Magic Selection tool to select the insides of the letters so I could fill them with white.

3. Added a new layer below the type and filled the previous selection with white.

4. Added a yellow stroke to that layer and adjusted the width to approximate the with on the LEGO logo.

Oh and I also duplicated the hand so I could place it over the clapboard.

Thank you for the information Dom. Looks like I have a lot to learn...

Once the kids were in bed, I spent an hour or so trying to duplicate your directions.

I could not find a polygonal lasso tool, but have a magnetic lasso tool. It seemed to be similiar enough that I was able to surround the letters and delete them. I did not delete the lego hand though.

Then I used the paint bucket to fill the whole area red.

And it was easy to add text in there. Though I was not able to tell *which* font would match the old font and did not want to spend the time going through the fonts one-by-one last night. I just wanted to concentrate on the techniques.

I have a feeling I spent more time & steps than I needed to on the above, but ah well. I'll learn.

Then I was stumped. I could not find a magic selection tool for the inside of the letters. And the more time I spent, it became clear that I just do not understand layers...

Looks like I have a lot of reading ahead of me!

Layers are a very powerful tool. Picture them as clear, plastic film laid over your background. Whatever is on the higher layer covers the lower ones. When you did the type it created a text layer that is on top of the background so you can see it. If you dragged the layer below the background layer it would not be visible.

Many of the tools are nested under other tools. If you right click on a tool the others should appear in a sub menu.

The font I used was a LEGO knock-off font I found on fonts101.com.

I would highly recommend www.elementsvillage.com. There's tutorials and a forum where you can get help with PSE. You can also post here as many of us DISigners use PSE or PS.
