We are 3 weeks away from our DW vacation :cool1: and I am doing up the kids backpacks for the plane. I was wondering if lego is allowed on. DS adores lego and the 3 hr plane ride would go by fast for him if there was lego involved. He can sit and play with lego for hours. (so can Daddy)
I can't see why they'd have a problem with legos... but I wanted to dbl check.

Also, since I'm on the topic, can I bring any packaged foods past security into the secured area of the airport? I always thought you had to buy any food once in the secured area.

TIA!!

Sure you could bring legos on! Personally I wouldn't do it, only because if one dropped it would be a PITA to pick it up ...but that's just me!

Yes, you can bring foods, but nothing liquidy (like I wouldn't bring yogurts or gogurts or hummus). No drinks though :)

HUMMUS ON A PLANE!!! Thats funny!!!
We always let our oldest bring his legos onboard. If he drops one then HE retrieves it not my large self. Keeps him entertained the whole trip.

Coffee, Tea or Hummus Sir?

Legos are a great distraction. DS10 can stay occupied for hours with them. However, we continually remind him that Legos are not a travel toy. Loosing a brick is no big deal but he has too many little accessories that he gets very upset about when he looses them. His creations are too elaborate and nothing simple to just carry around.
So, IMHO, if you can keep them contained and not be upset if one goes missing, then go for it.
DS10 is content to read the Lego magazines for an hour or so.:lmao:

I think bringing Legos is a great idea! Quiet play, no mess or smell, and they entertain kids for a long time. Yeah, dropping them & picking them up could be a pain, but other than that, plus all the way! Heck, I'd probably be 'helping' them build stuff. I've loved Legos forever.

Thanks guys! Yes I agree, dropping one would be annoying, but knowing my son, he would be very careful as he is very protective over them. I will make sure I have a container to keep them in or something.
Considering toys that are noisy, smelly, etc etc shouldnt or can't be used, there are limits on what we can bring. He isn't really 'into' coloring. I do have stickers and work sheets, but he gets bored fast with those (as he does them in school). Daddy and DS 6 will be SO excited to open up the backpack once on the plane to find a new lego set to build.

no hummus. Deal! Don't like it. lol Our flight is at 7am-10am and I don't see that there is a meal served. (Southwest) So I better make sure that their bellies are full before bording.

Thanks so much everyone, everyone here are such great resources!

LOL!! I only mentioned hummus because someone on another thread said they tried to bring hummus onboard and security made them ditch it because it was "liquid" hahahahaha!!!!

Legos YES! My ds Loves to play legos on the plane, this is the only thing he does on the plane. We always go to the Lego store and he gets a small pack just for the ride home. I pack them in a shallow tupperware container.

Food YES!

Have a great trip!

My son loves Lego, too. I try to find half of a shallow box, like for labels or stationery to keep the Lego pieces contained on the tray. Also, I always carry a small flashlight to find those pieces that dropped (very handy in restaurants). The kids love to look for the pieces, though I don't like them crawling all over the floor.

Those legos are great for the room as well. sometimes kids just need some chill time and it gives parents a little break!

I would just make sure he brings things that he doesn't mind loosing. Generic pieces. And if he has one of those half base plates, it might be good to bring, too.

If he drops pieces while the seatbelt light is on, he's not going to be able to retrieve it immediately, and things can move around on the floor. So just make sure to not bring anything that can't easily be replaced, or that will be mourned if it disappears (unlikely to completely disappear, but if you don't want to scour the floor as you're leaving the plane it would effectively be gone).

I gave my niece a new littlest pet shop set to play with, she lost a piece on the first flight. We had no time to search the floor after we landed as we had to catch the next flight. She was a little sad as it was a new toy and it only had about 3 small pieces.

Definately pack only stuff that can be easily replaced or he doesn't mind a piece or two missing.

Just remember turbulance would be a disaster for legos. I would not bring any hard to replace sets.

Just an FYI - Food does not have to be pre-packaged. My mother made us some yummy homemade banana muffins which we enjoyed on our early flight a few weeks ago. We just put them in a large ziploc bag in the backpack.

Also, I highly recommend using a crayon box or similar to keep the legos in and to build in. DD7 doesn't travel with Legos, but she often brings Polly Pocket type stuff with lots of little pieces. We use the crayon boxes (just open them up on the tray) and in many flights, we haven't lost a piece. They are also good to use for Dice games like travel Yahtzee; keeps things from rolling on the floor. :thumbsup2

Good idea about the baked goods. Perhaps we will get something at a bakery the day before or something. We are driving 9 hours to get to where we fly out. So, we will see what happens for our breakfast. I wont stress over it, we can pay the inflated prices in the secured area, I just hate to!

I picked up a couple of cloth collapsable storage bins at Dollar Tree to use on our plane ride. They would work great for legos.

If you don't want to have to buy drinks once you go through security, bring a couple of empty water bottles and some individual packets of koolaide/lemonade. Just fill the bottles at a water fountain past security and add the mix.

You can bring any kind of sandwich on the plane. If you want to keep them cold, just put them in an insulated bag with frozen veggies or grapes to keep them cold. The lunch bag will count as a personal item. We usually have a backpack as our personal item and just put our lunch bag inside it. We have had no problems bringing other snacks (pretzels, crackers, cereal, etc) on the plane packaged in ziplock bags.

I Love the idea of bringing a water bottle and filling it and adding a packet of mix! Thanks for the great tip!:goodvibes

I would definitely bring the lego... it's great to past the time. One thing I would recommend is putting it in a clear plastic container so it is easy to find the pieces and you won't lose the pieces if there is any turbulence. Have fun building.

Legos are awesome- keeps my nephews entertained on plane and car trips... one thing that we did to make it easier was to pack them in a small rectangular, narrow glad ware container, similar to this:

that would fit on the tray and also in their backpack easily... They would build their stuff in the gladware so that pieces wouldn't be lost, but if we got actual sets we made sure that they didn't have little lightsabers or wheels, or the people had helmets that would pop off so that there wouldn't be melt downs. Since they were building in the containers, it was easy to put away when we were landing...
