Legionnaires outbreak

Me too! The first thing I do in any hotel room is use sanitizing wipes everywhere... door handles, bathroom sink, counter, faucets and toilet, light switches, the TV remote, the phone and anything else that looks like it's commonly touched. Who knows if it really helps or not but it makes me feel better! None of us got sick on our recent trip, which is kind of a miracle ha ha.

Ditto!! You don't know who was in the room before you and was sick. I guarantee they don't sanitize any of that stuff! Also airplane tray tables. I've seen kids in dirty shoes standing on them, then the next passenger is eating off it. GAG. I wipe down all of our stuff when we travel.

This Legionnaires stuff is very demoralizing to me. I expect at DL to be exposed to the usual suspects -- colds, flu, that kind of thing that people spread around -- even wayward cases of measles. I categorically do not expect to encounter Legionnaires disease at DL, which I think is really just a result of dirty, nasty equipment. I'm totally grossed out by this. I don't want to feel I have to hold my breath when in a damp place at DL. There are so many places that are damp!

Absolutely! Being in remission from cancer and having very low immunities plus not being able to be reimmunized for measles after my stem cell transplant, I sanitize EVERYTHING on the plane — tray table, seat belt, arm rest, seat pocket. I feel embarrassed sometime, but really, I’m surprised more people aren’t aware of the germs. There are some really eye opening (and stomach turning) studies that have been done.
In Disneyland I use sanitizer after I come off each ride, and it’s worked really well for me for three trips now even with my compromised immune system. I know that won’t help for an airborne disease like Legionaire’s, but you do what you can, and it does seem to me that Disney did their due diligence as soon as they could.

Same here!! I will get my wipes before we enter and just quickly wipe everything down that we will touch. If we are traveling with my family i will then go knock on their room and do the same. I do not care what type of hotel or if it is one star or a five star hotel I will wipe down everything. And also use socks. I don't know why but i can not and will not touch any hotel floor with out socks/slippers. DH laughs because if anything he is the one who exaggerates about cleanliness and germs, but traveling will turn me into a germaphobe.

Oh, I know, I feel like a total germaphobe when traveling. But I've gotten sick SO many times while traveling that I finally said enough! I need to take some measures! I also wipe down the tray, arm rests and seatbelta on planes, turn off the air vents above our seats (so the recirculated air isn't blowing the germs from everyone else on the plane right in our faces) and even coat the inside of my nose with Neosporin before getting on the plane (a tip I saw online somewhere). I swear since I've been taking these measures I've gotten sick FAR fewer times than I used to!

Sanitizers and such are great but Legionnaires is air borne and there's no way to protect yourself from it.

Ironically, it was after our shortest trip to Disneyland this year. We were only in the parks one day and then ran the 10K the next day. Like I said, I'm relatively healthy over all. My asthma is very mild and I didn't even own an inhaler for a few years before this hit. So having a "cold" for two months is extremely unusual for me. The chances that I picked it up somewhere other than Disney are very, very possible too since it was several days later when it hit. And I could have picked up more than one bug along the way since I tried to keep up as normal a routine as possible, including traveling to California twice. But my husband saw the headline and shared the story with me and it had us both wondering a bit. But I'm 95% better now and back to normal activities so I'm not going to dwell on it.

We live in Orange County. There was a terrible upper respiratory virus making the rounds in September. My son got very sick as did I. Approximately 3 weeks later, sick again with a wet cough... it's another virus. Both illnesses confirmed by doctors as something that is "going around." You likely caught the same thing.
