Many trips we’ve had leftover cases of water, soda etc. We usually take them down with us and put them on a sidewalk near where we’re packing up our car, with a sign: Free Please take if you’d like. With all the people coming and going in the 20 minutes we’re there somebody usually comes along and takes it.

Last trip was slow time at WDW so after nobody took at resort we just threw them in the car and put them on the sidewalk at car rental drop off. They were gone before we even finished unpacking the car.

One other thought about the leaving alcohol out - even if in a laundry room...

It's not just about kids/tweens/teens finding it. You never know who may be newly (or not newly) sober for whom stumbling across it in an ice machine room or the laundry would send them off the wagon. I'm talking adults here. Are you going to say "then they shouldn't be wandering around out of sight" also? They are adults and entitled to walk around on their own - to go and get ice or go and do the laundry. They shouldn't have to live in fear of finding someone else's leftover booze.

IMHO it would be better to order LESS than you think you'll need and then you can just supplement after the fact.

Edit to add: Yes, I do have a few very good friends in recovery (from life before I knew them in all but one case) who would *probably* not be triggered now, but early on in their recovery, finding random alcohol left in a "free to good home" pile would have totally undone their recovery to that point. And no, you'd never know they are in recovery to look at them.

By this theory, stores should not sell alcohol, restaurants should not serve it , the pool area should not have a bar either, etc. It is just as easy for an alcoholic to buy a bottle when grocery shopping or at a restaurant/bar. I grew up with an alcoholic parent, aunts, and uncles, and am very familiar with alcoholism, it does not matter where or when they see it, it is still their choice and it is not possible for the whole world to cater to them.

Last trip, we had some can/bottles of water/juice/ soda left. Maybe 6 -8 of each. I left the lined up on the counter in the villa, hoping housekeeping took it.

I did have a qt size of unopened bubbles. Brought with a walmart shop after DD spent $2 for about 4 oz of bubbles at disney. Well we didn't use it. The day we were leaving, I went down to the lobby and saw a family with young kids checking in. Asked if they'd like it.

I think the point here is, it is in a place you wouldn't expect it. Someone could be avoiding bars and restaurants are easy to not order drinks at but if they're having a difficult time and are out doing the laundry and just happen across it, not being prepared could be a recipe for disaster.

I completely understand the point. MY point is that the world is not alcoholic proof, just like it is not kid proof. When did it become everyone else's responsibility to try to keep everyone from doing something they should not do? That is not how life is. Until Disney has a problem with it, people are still going to leave their things for others. You could be walking down the street and see a half empty bottle that someone dumped. This comes down to personal responsibility.

There is caring about others, and then being unrealistic. How can it be reasonable to live trying to accommodate EVERY SINGLE ISSUE that anyone has? You are talking about a very small minority of people and the chances of the situation you describe happening is miniscule. You think you are making me into the bad guy but what about you? Do you go around living your life thinking about everyone's issues? Do you wear perfume/cologne, or scented deodorant? Because there are those of us who are allergic to the scents and causes us physical issues. Are you going to stop wearing the scents that you like because you might run into someone that has this allergy? You have never consumed any kind of nut and then gone out into public? I hope you are getting the point.

ANYWAY.....going "home" in August, very excited, staying at Grand Floridian Villas, and hope I approach my "Welcome Home" mat without piles of someone else's leftover groceries next to my door!

I don't know about AT Disney World, but it has happened in the past with the "Fish Extenders" on the cruiseline. Before the crackdown on bringing alcohol on board, some people would give mini-bottles of various alcohols or wines, and yes, kids (mostly tweens and teens) DID get into it. In at least one case, the kid who instigated the "search and recover" had parents doing the exchange and saw that they had gotten it, so the kids went roaming and checking all the extenders. That wasn't the whole reason that the alcohol policy was changed (largely it was because the cruise line was losing that money and people were NOT sticking to the rules of "for consumption in your room") but complaints from parents about drunk tweens and teens did enter into the decision.

Imagine complaining to management because you can’t control your kids. If my kids found a way to get into alcohol and get drunk underage while on vacation that would be an issue we deal with privately. I’m not running to the supervisors to take care of it for me. And it’d probably be the last vacation I take them on for a good while.

Personally if I saw a case of water or beer in the hallway I wouldn’t assume it was free for the taking. I would think they didn’t have room on their cart and were coming back for it.

This isn't about WDW, but we've rented a beach house from the same company in the Outer Banks for years. They have a collection spot at their rental office for folks to drop of unopened nonperishable items at the end of their stay. They then donate it to their local food bank. It would be nice if Disney had something similar, though I guess with the sheer volume of guests that's probably not realistic. Still, it's a nice thought.

Because that sounds realistic, to order the exact amount of everything you'd want for a trip. "I really want to order granola bars to eat for breakfast on my 7 day trip, but they only sell them in 12 packs...guess I cant order them now" or "I really want to order water bottles to stay hydrated. I imagine ill need 21 if I drink 3 a day, but they only come in packs of 12 and 30. Guess I cant order the water because god forbid I have a few left over"

Hi Michael, can you please simply reply to the main point of my post? How do you feel, at the moment you go to your villa at check in, seeing a pile of half-used groceries on the floor next to you? I'm sorry, but it's as unattractive to me as piles of dirty linen on the floor. I have no problem with people sharing, I think it's very nice. But the laundry room solution I'm hearing of sounds a bit nicer.

Someone posted a picture on facebook, very proud to have left a pile of leftover groceries on the villa hall floor to share, with OPENED boxes of crackers and snacks...LAST SUMMER, during the height of the pandemic, and didn't understand why everyone said WHAT??????

I’m always so happy when we arrive at our room I probably wouldn’t even notice the stuff and if I did it wouldn’t bother me. Think about how lucky we are that we get to have this to complain about in the first place. And I think passing things on to the next guest is an awesome idea and saves from a lot of stuff going into the trash I’m sure.
