Mythbusters should read this: http://www.wbaltv.com/news/investigators-christmas-tree-to-blame-in-annapolis-mansion-fire/30964600
This was an AWFUL fire in our area caused by lights on a very dry tree.
Sympathies to the victims. Mythbusters don't need to read it, it was pretty much the same experiment that they did. Extremely dry tree, electrical failure (though theirs was on the light string itself, not material nearby.)
"Investigators confirmed that an electrical failure led to the Christmas tree igniting..."
"...an electrical failure ignited the combustible material in the area which spread quickly to the Christmas tree..."
I'm not saying trees don't burn - but these people were home and they lost everything, they may as well have been out of the house. Chairs are combustible but you don't worry about them when you go out. Electrical failures happen on appliances but you wouldn't unplug your freezer when you go out.
