Hey everyone,

Just need to vent really - hope no one minds!

I have decided to leave my Uni course, as I've realised it's not what I want to do, and now I'm stressing about finding a job! :sad1: I really want to cry because I'm so stressed out about money.

I stuck with Uni for so long, simply because I didn't want my family saying "I told you so" when I left - a few of my family members didn't think I could cut it at uni - they're not the most supportive bunch!!

Anyhoo, I've spent most of this morning on job sites, and there's not much out there at all, so I'm starting to go into panic mode!!!

Does anyone have any ways of making some extra cash that I could try whilst searching for jobs?

Thanks for listening to my vent! I don't have many people I can have a proper chat with about this kinda stuff! :goodvibes

Ohhhh, I'm sorry to hear that

What were you doing in uni? How far along were you?

I understand how hard it is to find a job - a couple of my friends either dropped uni/graduated uni over the last year or two, and I've heard how tough it is. They just kept shoving CVs out and ringing around etc...

Not the most inventive ways to make money, but do you have any stuff that you'd like to sell on eBay or do a carboot sale with?
Do you have any "skills" - like have you ever babysat or walked dogs or cleaned and did odd jobs for people?
I know it sounds cliche'd, but when I was struggling for money in uni last year, I managed to find some babysitting to do - it helped!

I really do hope that you manage to find something. Keep us updated.

x

Thanks BethEJo

I was half-way through my first year of nursing.

I just don't know how I'm going to pay my bills now until I get some work :sad1:

I have a couple of things that I'm hoping to sell on ebay, and of course I have all my books from Uni that I can try and sell on there too. I don't have much though. I was also thinking of trading in some DVD's and games on the Music Magpie website.

I've never babysat or walked dogs (apart from my own dog!), the only skill that I could possibly make some extra cash out of would be my beauty therapy qualifications from a few years back. I only really do things for family members just now (shaping eyebrows, manicures mainly).

Thanks so much for your response! It's good to have someone to vent to! lol :goodvibes

Have you thought about maybe going back to do a different course?

I'm probably not the best person to offer advice! I graduated 2 years ago and still yet to find a "proper" job, currently unemployed and it's not fun :(

Sorry to hear that Scottishgirl! I hope you find something soon!

I haven't thought about doing a different course, simply because I now don't have a clue what I want to do with my life :sad1: Why is life so complicated??? :headache:

I'm glad I graduated in 2006. The job market is so tough right now. I don't know what to suggest really but I just wanted to say good luck.

Im really sorry I havnt got any advise to offer you as ive never been to Uni, but just wanted to wish you luck and hope you manage to get something sorted asap:hug:

Tell me about it! I did finish my degree but it's not necessarily what I want to do now which is half the battle! I wish I was one of those people who wanted to be a teacher or a doctor or something their whole life!

Good Luck :)

you need to give yourself a good talking to. You are talented and gifted and any employer would be lucky to have you! Why oh why do women suffer from this lack of confidence in the workplace? you can bet that men don't!

have a good think about YOUR skills and what you can do and get out there. I dropped out of Uni too and my folks were not very supportive so I know how you feel.

I have a 'good' job now. try different things and don't thing about the money, if it's min. wages that's ok as there are generally ways that you can increase this,i.e. extra hours, xmas, staff perks, we all have to start somewhere.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do, and stay positive:goodvibes

While you are looking for work, put your beauty qualifications to some use. Get an advertisement in the paper and in local shops ( some may charge to put in window, but most are free )

If you have a car go mobile, you never know how much work you will get out of it, but theres no harm in trying while you figure out what you want to do! You may even end up with your own Salon one day, stranger things have happened! :thumbsup2

But just stay positive :)

That's a great idea in my opinion!!

I knew a lady who was one of the mums of the brownies group I used to lead, and she did the mobile beautician sort of thing for some extra cash.

She had some fliers printed of her name, phone number and services and prices offered, and handed them out to friends and stuff. Once you do a few people, I suppose you may get more work by word of mouth and stuff.

Do you think this could be a possibility?

Thank you everyone for your responses!!!

The mobile beauty thing could definitely be a possibility! I may need to get my creative cap on soon and make up some flyers for myself! lol :goodvibes

Thanks for all your help :thumbsup2

have you thought about apprenticing at a salon or parlour?
trying to find a job after university is hard, even worse now. if you need money, the best suggestion i can recommend is temping, there is alot of temp office jobs out there at the moment.

it can get depressing, but keep your chin up and believe in yourself. x

Thank you :goodvibes

I would not go back to working in a salon - I did for a while when I had my qualifications, but didn't enjoy it, so I just stick to doing it on the side now.

I've been thinking more about things today, and I am thinking of speaking to the careers adviser at Uni, as I'm thinking of going for the 3 year midwifery course - it was originally what I wanted to do. You used to be able to do the 3 year adult nursing course and then do a shortened midwifery course, but they no longer do the shortened course, so it's 3 years. I'm not sure if I will have the entry requirements for the course, but if not, I can always work towards getting them and then apply!

This sounds like a good idea, and since you have the experience from the first bit of nursing, staying at the same uni would be good. Most uni's are pretty flexible once you are already there (to be honest, they want to keep your money rather than have another uni snap you up!), and the uni advice service are pretty good at giving money advice.

I would definitely suggest falling back on your beautician skills! Use word of mouth, maybe tell your friends that you will treat them for free if they recommend three mates or something like that. I always go through someone's recommendation! You can even print of business cards for free in some places, and get your friends to pass them around.

If you started a nursing course I know getting temp work as a carer would be a cinch! It often means having a car, but it is good money even if the work can be difficult at times. I have worked in the holidays working with children with special needs, and there is always a market. Have a look at the local agencies who supply this kinds of work, as there is always demand. This doesn't have to be a long term option, just something to tide you through.

Also, if you have officially dropped out, got to the job centre and start sorting out benefits. It can often take a while to get sorted but it could be a vital safety net in case you cant get a job or any extra work to tide you over.

Best of luck! Let us know how you get on!
