Leaving to Disney today and DH had Hernia operation yesterday!

Help! DH had to have Hernia operation yesterday - and still wants to leave to Disney today! I don't think it's doable - but he said he feels fine! Did I mention we are driving down from NY? I think we should cancel - but has anyone out there ever been to Disney right after a hernia operation and think it is doable? His doctor said he should be back to normal in 3 day - I've never had a hernia operation - but I can't believe that is possible

I've no answers for your questions, but I do hope all goes well. Personally I think I'd wait a day or two. How long are you planning to stay? What kind of ressies have you made? Maybe you could just shift things a bit to give him a little more time to heal. Gee, men are stubborn

Hi,
My cousin(in his 50's) went thru a hernia operation,and was'nt allowed to drive for 5days,lift anything heavy for 2wks,and not to exert himself to much for it all to heal properly.He went back to work after 1week.This is what he was told and i believe he did obey to it.But everyone is different and heals differently,but remember it is still an operation know matter how small,and still needs time to settle inside and out.I hope this may help you,and i hope your husband recovers soon.All the best.x.

I was laid up good for 3+ days after my hernia operation a few years ago. Some surgeries are more involved than others and his recovery time may be less, but I know I would in no way have been ready for a trip to WDW for at least a week.

I agree.....stubborn as can be. I know he doesn't want to disappoint anyone (since our oldest found out about the surprise trip) - but, I'd rather have a little disappointment now then have him hurt himself. We were planning to stay until Sept 9th - so we do have the ability to leave later....I'm just not sure how quickly he will recover and don't want him to tell me he's fine when he really isn't!

I suppose it's possible to do this, but I sure wouldn't. In time he'll probably feel good as new, but 1 day doesn't sound like enough time to me. I'd postpone.

Whatever you decide to do, I would definitely recommend that you rent a wheelchair (see the disabilities section for specific questions) for your husband. If he insists on going to Disney World, that's the only way I'd let him do it.

This seems like a sensible middle ground solution/compromise. He's probably fine to go this way. He'd have to still probably stand in line, but at least much of the walking from place to place could be eliminated.

Just be careful no DISers see DH get out of the wheelchair and into a standing line. He'll get all kinds of grief here.

It might be the medication talking. He should check with his doctor. You wouldn't want a vacation ruined by complications caused by trying to do too much too soon. When my dh had gallbladder surgery, he felt terrific the first day. Two days later, he understood why the dr. told him to take the week off of work.

My Dh went through this and would in NO way be ready for Disney after one day. I say wait till Sat and see how he feels, and when you get there still get the chair. When my DH had the surgery he was about 27 and in pretty good shape but was out of it for like 10 days, each person is different but you dont want complications or infection. When does he go back to the doctor for a follow up? Maybe you should ask the doctor whats best too.

I know the hernia repairs that they do today are much less extensive than years ago. My husband had his done last year and with the technique his doctor used he was up and around the next day although he wasn't allowed to lift for 6 weeks. If his doctor says ok then go but take precautions. Your drive is long so break it up so he can get out and stretch his legs and rest while you take a turn at the wheel. Maybe your first couple days there you can lay around the pool (you may have to keep the incision dry for a few days though) or go for short visits to the park with a wheelchair. The key is NOT to overdo it because he feels good and definitely NO lifting! In all honesty, if he's anything like my Dh he would be stir crazy laying around the house anyway. One more tip, keep an eye on the incision to make sure it is clean and no signs of infection...you would be doing that at home anyway! Have fun!

What did his doctor say? Was he cleared for travel?The Disney freak in me says if he thinks he is ok go for it. But the Registered Nurse in me says no way unless the Doc says it is ok. A lot of people actually feel great the day of surgery due to endorphins...then the pain sets in 2-4 days afterward. You wouldn't want to get all the way down there and then end up in the hospital down there....miles away from your doctor...could potentially turn into a nightmare.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I never even thought about renting a wheelchair....that may be an option....His doctor scheduled a follow up for 2 weeks from today - but also told him he was good to go back to work in 3 days - as long as he wasn't on the pain medication. He has no stitches - they did a new Thermo glue procedure on him and the doctor said he could shower right away - but no pool for 3 days. I know there have been so many advancements in the med. field...but I'd just be worried sick the whole time.

He'd have to stay off roller coaster until next Tuesday(not a big deal since he doesn't like roller coasters). She told him to take it slow and rest when he needs to...but otherwise he is good to go. I told him I'd consider it....I'm still on the fence.

I would tell him to take it easy for at least a couple of days. DH was in quite a bit of pain after his. Funny, he had his done a few years ago right AFTER our WDW trip. By the last day, he was hurting & he had to keep finding benches to lie down! What a trooper. Hope it goes well!

OMG that is such good news. If the Dr. said go then go! Just have him listen to his body and rest when he needs to....and obviously bring the pain meds just in case. That new glue that they use instead of stiches is awesome!... I just had back surgery 2 weeks again and that is what they used on me. Have a great time !
