and this week we have to take him for a MRI to make sure everything is healing in the right place...

so he'll be going to disney for the first time in a cast - he's 6.

I know he'll still have a great time and it will still be magical, but I'm the one who is so upset about it.

Anyway - will Disney stop him from riding anything due to the cast? As long as we feel it's safe (and his dr does too), I'm hoping he'll be allowed on - we won't be a note or anything will we?

My son broke his leg 1 week before we were going to go in march . Just got it off today and we are leaving thurs . Just watch the water rides don't want to get the cast wet...

i'm not sure about disney's policies for some rides (most rides would be stupid to not let him on since only a few are thrill rides), but a rule of thumb i always follow to back my self up for everything is always to have a note just incase, this way if someone tries to challenge you with the decision to let your son ride something, you can just whip out the doctor's note and prove them wrong.

Just wanted to add that he'll have a water-proof cast and will be able to swim, etc.. :) I'm amazed at how easily kids bounce back - that's why I'd hate for him to be refused a ride (he's short, so I don't even know if he'll make the 44" for the major rides).

My DD8 broke her arm just 3 days before our scheduled trip last October. While her injury was too severe for her to ride anything that may involve her using the arm to brace herself, out of the "big thrill" rides, she was able to ride Soarin and Splash Mountain. No one questioned us or even batted an eye. We brought a retractable Sharpie marker and all the characters signed her cast. It made a great souvenier! She still had a great time despite her heavy cast - not one complaint. Best wishes on your trip!

Thanks, Nurse - that's what I wanted to hear - I'll put "retractable sharpie" on my list!

My DS broke his arm about 3 weeks before our first trip. I, like you, was more upset than he was. We didn't have a problem getting on any rides and his cast went from his fingers up to his armpit (We even did RNR and TOT). Also, if you plan on watching parades, try to get a seat near the curb so that no one is in front of you. We did this and the characters would come out of the parade and come up and kiss DS's arm.

Even though it unfortunate, don't let it ruin your trip. Go and have a wonderful time--just think on the bright side-- it could have been a leg and needed crutches. yuk. Either way, I'm sure this is a well deserved vacation so have fun and make sure the characters write small enough to fit them all in (and probably will get special attention because of it) :goofy: :goofy: ENJOY!

>>> doctor's note...
Doctor's note or no, DS should not ride on anything that may give him the urge to let alone the need to use his casted hand to hold on with. Use a sling for good measure while riding.

The family should walk slow so he does not have to sweat to keep up.

I stuck a piece of glass through my hand a week before we went in November. I had stitches, and by the time we went, I still couldn't use that hand, or grip anything (it was my right hand, too). DH was so mad at me! When I called him at work and told him, his first words were, this better not mess up our Disney trip! Oh well, what a sensitive guy! I still had a great time, though. Make sure you walk slow!

Awww... poor little man! :(

That is so cool that he gets a waterproof cast! I had no idea they even made such a thing!

I agree with the others... and I think you'll be fine if you just take it day by day. I'd be sure to bring some ibuprofen for him because broken arms have the tendency to get pretty achey.

Enjoy yoruselves! There are PLENTY of things to do at Disney! (And what you don't get to do this trip, is ONLY a good reason to make ANOTHER trip!) :goodvibes

My SO has been to Disney dozens and dozens of times, and still one of his favorite memories is when he went to Disney with his arm in cast and all the characters signed his cast and made a big deal about making sure he was in good spirits.

Don't worry, your son can still have a wonderful time!! :thumbsup2

We're leaving in less than two weeks too! :) "See" you there!

Bring a felt tip pen get lots of autographs :cool1: he'll have a blast

What a great idea! Turn those lemons into lemonade!!! OP - Hope you and your family have a wonderful trip, cast and all! :wizard:

When we went 2 years ago, my son split his chin open the day before we left and had to get stitches. So in every picture, he either had a band aid on his chin or the thread hanging down!! ;)

Kids bounce back quick. He probably won't even care that he has a cast on. Always seems to bother the mothers more! :)

Boy, I know how you feel about things happening right before a trip! Two years ago, our family had a trip planned to Gulf Shores Alabama(Beautiful Beaches). Anyway, I was carrying my DS 4 down the stairs and I fell. I fell on my back right onto his left leg. I felt terrible!!! He broke his lower leg in two places, and thought our trip was ruined! Luckily, when I took him to the hospital(my DH was out of town, of course), the orthopedic doctor on call was awesome! He told us he did the waterproof casts also, so I asked him if our trip to Gulf Shores could really happen! He said SURE! The only thing the doctor suggested was that after my DS had been in the sand to wash his cast out really good in the tub of the hotel room. My DS had NO problems getting around and never complained about his leg itching or anything! It was so awesome! Just have a good time at Disney!!!!

Bring mortin or advil. His arm will get tired and achy from the weight of the cast (also it will swell from the heat) Run some ice down his arm when it is very hot. The water proof casts cause extra swelling and sweating.

He had a short arm cast on when we went and he was almost 5. They do check but the best thing we found was a newspaper bags, washcloth and waterproof tape. Great for showers/baths, wet rides or just running through the water there.

If the cast does get wet, plan for a long bout with a hair dryer. it can swell and/or cause skin problems if it stays to wet inside the cast.

the best thing is his name is Chip and Chip signed it "ah nuts Chip, love Chip" He stiill has it and he is almost 23!

Best wishes and good luck. It will work out great!
