So, I'm SO happy we are leaving in 4 days for the World!
My school is impossibly difficult this semester and I definitely need a break - my big vacation this summer was 2 weeks of school!
We are taking the kids out of school - mainly because we scheduled it for my break because my courses are less forgiving than theirs.
Anyway, this is kind of our last "big" trip as a whole family - DSS just turned 17 and we probably won't be heading back to Florida until 2011 when I graduate (my Super-Fabulous Graduation Celebration Trip of 2011 as it is officially named), so he'll be going on 20 by then.
He's a junior and he plays soccer. We are incredibly proud of him - he's a good kid in about every aspect and we really couldn't ask for more from him. We knew this trip would take him away from school for a few days and from soccer, which is important to him. We've talked with him about it all along the way - we never wanted to force him to go but we made it clear that we really wanted him to come with us. We worked out a compromise so that he would travel down with us and spend a couple of days then he would fly back home early (his mom would pick him up) so he could go to a soccer tournament with his team.
Last night, we get a call from his coach - he was selected to the All-Conference team and they want to present the award after their game on Friday night (the only game he was going to miss). I know that it's important to him now (and it's impossible to explain the perspective that 15 additional years of life can give to a 17 year old) - so needless to say, he wants to stay for the game/award. I don't blame him, but it still makes me sad nonetheless. He still wants to come with us too (who wouldn't?
), so his mom told him she would fly him down on Sunday - he'll miss our trip down and about half a day. It is a nice situation for him because he gets everything he wants (and it was generous of his mom to offer, I'll admit).
Thanks for reading this far if you have! I guess I'm just sad that I feel like our last "real" family vacation is being spoiled by last minute things. I'll get over it before we leave on Friday and I'm glad he'll still get to join us for some fun times - it's just not the way we had planned it.
I'll stop being a whiny baby now and get back to packing!
